Is HDTV, whether it be cable or network, the output is no greater than 1080i ?

Answer
In short yes, output is no greater than 1080i.

A single coax cable cannot transmit a true 1080p signal. And as such, no cable or satellite provider will be able to transmit anything higher than 1080i without overhauling their entire setup.

I work in an HD production house, and even in the professional world a single core cable cannot transmit a 1080p signal, it is too much bandwidth for the cable to be able to handle. We utilize a dual cable system to be able to do it, but no cable or satellite companies use anything like that. The companies that claim to be able to show 1080p are not showing true 1080p. What they do is lower the quality but keep the resolution, which results in an inferior product. Imagine if Coca-Cola started filling their 2 liter bottles half with coke and half with antifreeze. Sure it would still be a 2 liter drink, but it would not at all be the same quality.

[Edit]
Stephen allow me to clarify my answer since you do not seem to understand.

NO cable or satellite manufacture can send a true 1080p signal to an HDTV. Sure, you can download a PPV of 1080p but you CAN NOT watch it in realtime due to the bandwidth constraints of RG6 the standard in coaxial cable for cable and satellite companies. The best they can do is 1080i.

"In the United States, 1080p over-the-air broadcasts still do not exist as of 2011; all major networks use either 720p60 or 1080i60 encoded with MPEG-2. However, satellite services (e.g. DirecTV, XstreamHD, and Dish Network) utilize the 1080p/24-30 format with MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 encoding for pay-per-view movies that are downloaded in advance via satellite or on demand via broadband internet only. At this time, no pay service channel such as USA, HDNET, etc. nor premium movie channel such as HBO, etc., stream their services live to their distributors (MVPD) in this format because many MVPDs, especially DBS and cable, DO NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT BANDWIDTH to provide the format streaming live to their subscribers without negatively impacting their current services and because of the high "cost" of using more bandwidth for one 1080p/24 channel than what would be used for a 1080i or even a 720p channel and for only those relatively few subscribers who have HDTV devices that can display 1080p/24 as not being an efficient use of their LIMITED BANDWIDTH."

Source - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080p

"Standard definition 480i DVD movies are typically 5 to 8 mbps (megabits per second) MPEG-2 whereas these so-called HD wannabes weigh in at a pathetic 1.5 to 4 mbps of 720p H.264"

Source - http://www.zdnet.com/blog/ou/dont-believe-the-low-bit-rate-hd-lie/959

"But there’s one dirty little secret that people are forgetting or that they don’t understand, IT’S NOT HD they’re getting over the Internet. Heck it’s not even NTSC 480i (720×480 60 fields interlaced) DVD quality when you really look at the amount of video data you’re getting!"

Source - http://www.zdnet.com/blog/ou/why-hd-movie-downloads-are-a-big-lie/511

"'But are they Blu-ray quality?," 'he Times asks of the Dish and DIRECTV movies. 'Resolution is not the only factor that determines picture quality. Another is bit rate, the number of bits per second that are being transmitted down the pipe to consumers...Bit rate is a subject that the cable and satellite providers never discuss, but anyone who watches the various services can see that some channels are considerably softer looking than others.'

The Times quotes well-known TV engineer Pete Putman as saying that CBS now offers the high bit rate over the air with 17 megabits per second for its high-def programs; and that's for 1080i, not 1080p. But Putman says he believes both Dish and DIRECTV are transmitting high-def programming at around 6-8 megabits per seconds.

Consequently, Putnam is dubious that the satcasters have the bandwidth to increase their bit rate to offer true 1080p video."

Source - http://www.tvpredictions.com/1080p080108.htm

If you spend the time to read the articles above, you will see that nothing has changed in the last few years. DirecTV, Dish Network, and all the others are offering 1080p video at a quality lower than DVD. As such it is NOT true 1080p, which their current setups can not handle. The only connections which could possibly offer true 1080p would be the FiOS fiber optic system. Which to my understanding while they have the ability, they have not done so yet. What you have provided as a source is a marketing gimmick which you, like many others, have fallen for. There is a reason that Blu-ray players do not connect to a HDTV using a RG6 coaxial cable.

Please do your research before you wrongly correct me.

I've researched it a little bit and I think I'm going to get a mini DVI to DVI cable and a DVI to HDMI cable. I have a 32 inch Vizio HDTV. I think this would work, my question is, is this the best way? I'm mainly concerned with the picture quality and finer details like text. Will the picture be as clear as it is on my laptop monitor?

Answer
Yes, that is indeed the best way. There is no better way to connect a computer to a display than DVI or HDMI, because it's a digital signal.

HDMI and DVI have identical image quality. Why?

Because HDMI is merely DVI + audio on one cable! The video signal carried by HDMI is in fact single-link DVI.

The only difference between a standard HDMI cable and a DVI-to-HDMI cable is that the DVI-to-HDMI does not carry audio.

Do you need a HD box to have great picture quality , my picture is blurry . What settings do you use for the tv. If you can help it would be great. leave your email so i get more help thank you

Answer
An hdtv needs hd programming to look the best that it can and it has to be hooked up with an hdmi cable.
Right now your looking at standard definition on a high definition tv. Once you get the hd programming you won't want to watch sd anymore. There is that much of a difference.

I'm looking to buy a 34 to 42 inch flat screen, high quality, hdtv or plasma or LCD or whatever, Television sometime soon.
Any advice in general for buying/shopping for one?
Would I be better off purchasing it before or after Christmas?
Any advice in particular for buying one in Manhattan?

Answer
It doesn't really matter if you buy your tv before or after christmas. Most retailers have those price match policy for 1 month for appliances- that if you buy it now for that low price and the price changed after a week, you can then have that price matched if you go to their customer service and show them your receipt.

Good Luck!

What is the best flat panel hdtv around 16-22inches?

jhwang420

what is the best quality hdtv flat panel that has a pretty good price as well.. im gonna be using it for my college dorm room...around 16-22 inches

Answer
At 16-22 inches go for a 720p LCD or Plasma. Unless you are sitting very close to your screen or using it for a computer display, 1080p is going to be overkill.

At 16-22 inches and 720p, most big brands will offer about the same quality (There really havent been any advancements for panels that small at 720p in a while, manufactures are focusing on larger 1080p sets now). Try to stick with a major brand and youll be fine: Samsung, Toshiba, Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, LG..

You could even look into a 22-24" Dell LCD monitor that has DVI and Component inputs.. the downside with this youll need a cable box/direct tv to play video on it and youll need some sort of extra sound set-up since the Dell LCD monitors dont have speakers built in.

Lets face it. Its 2013. Still I would like to ask: should I invest? Im planning on buying a cheap first gen PS3, I would renovate it by cleaning it and changing thermal paste, adding a new, large hard drive. I am also planning on buying a cheap HDTV to use with it. I want to buy it becouse I want to play some games that are only available on the PS platform, but also any games I can get my hands on. But the big question: should I invest in buying a first gen PS3 that probably was made in 2006 or 2007? Also is there a noticeable difference between the SLIM and the FAT versions? I need advice, please help.
Please note that I dont want to wait for the PS4 becouse I dont have the money for that thing....

Answer
If you don't plan on getting a ps4 right away then ya get a ps3, but you should get a slim as they're more reliable.

prediction please: when will the blue ray player drop to sub $100?

Eric C

i am wondering should hold out or get a regular 1080p upconverting hdmi player?
thanks.
i am considering philips 5992, $62 on amazon...

Answer
Sub $100? Not until Christmas 2012.

And then in 2013, we'll hear about the next new format which will pretty much be the end of Blu-ray. Buh-bye!

Upscaling players are cheap, and quite honestly, unless you have a 40" or larger HDTV that does 1080p, this will be quite adequate for your needs. I have one of the players from Oppo Digital (http://oppodigital.com) Their players handle just about any format you can imagine, are region free (yay), and consistently score high with even the pickiest Home Theater Enthusiasts.

Now, if you're interested in video games, you may want to consider a PS3 which plays games, upscales DVDs and plays blu-ray discs, all at 1080p. At $400, it's one of the cheapest blu-ray players out there, and still considered one of the best for the money.

I don't need surround sound, just want to have extra speakers to supplement the poor sound quality of the TV.

Its a Toshiba 26LV47
I do not have a certain type of speakers in mind yet.

Answer
Yes but make sure to stick to a 2.1 set at best. More than likely you will need to hook up with a stereo mini to RCAs. But since you did not include any model numbers it can never be sure.

Some TVs do not have analog outputs so provide more detail on what TV exactly you have and the model of speakers you are looking at, with that it can be said what to do to hook them up.

EDIT:
Looks like you will need a receiver to make that happen. The TV does not have a analog audio out so you will need a receiver of some sort to down mix for you. Unless it has a headphone jack but that may look tacky, I could not find information about a headphone jack or not on your TV.

Is there a quality difference between length of HDMI cables?

Marvin

They say that a longer distance between components means that more cable is required to make the connections, and over the distance of the cable, the HDMI signal will therefore degrade and also the picture and sound quality. I have a 9,84/3m feet HDMI cable connected from my Xbox 360 to my HDTV and i want the best picture and sound quality that i can get, would getting a 3,28 feet/1m HDMI cable instead make any quality difference?

Answer
Signal degradation won't be a problem unless you're talking about VERY long cables - usually dozens of feet in length.

In addition, HDMI cables carry a digital signal so it either works perfectly...or it won't work at all. You won't get any difference between a 1M and 3M cable.

Do I connect HDMI cable from ps3 to tv, ps3 to cable box, cable to tv? Which ones?

Answer
One cable for each item you want to connect to the tv. The HDMI will provide the best picture quality and carries the video and audio signal. Keep in mind that the the size of your tv, you can not see the difference between 720P and 1080P, you need at less a 46" or larger. Using HDMI cable is also cheaper that using the component video cable and an optical for the audio. Hope this will help you out.

I have a Phillips 60 Inch DLP HDTV and i have regular cable and i connect it, and the image looks way to stretched and nasty looking, not very good image quality at all, do i have to buy some type of cable or anything special for this type of tv to make the image look better.

Answer
Regular cable will always look like crap on an HDTV because it has to stretch and scale an image from 480p to 720p or 1080p depending on your TV. In order to get the best quality, there are two things you need to do:

1. Upgrade to HDTV and watch HD stations.
2. Upgrade to digital cable and use HDMI or component cables. This will be much better than a coax or composite.

As far as your "stretched" issue, that's your aspect ratio. Your TV is probably a 16:9 aspect ratio. Regular cable is 4:3. Go into your menues and change the aspect ratio and everything will look better. You will have black bars on the sides though.

Why does my HP Hdtv image looks blury, when I hook up my hdtv cable from my laptop to the tv?

I have a Satellite x205-s9349 Toshiba laptop... and when I connect my 80dlls HDTV cable from my laptop to my HP hdtv the image looks blurry, only videos look good... do you guys have any suggestions so I can correct the image?

Answer
First off, check your screen resolution on your computer. The base setting your computer should use for widescreen is 1024X768. If it is set at something different then switch it up. There may be other resolution settings that will give you an even better picture, but the 1024 is perfect for widescreen.

Second, check your TV's manual and double check the recommended refresh rate for that set. Many computer video cards can handle refresh rates much greater than the Tv can handle. You may need to adjust that setting to ensure good picture quality. A higher refresh rate can also harm your TV permanently. 60Hz is a normal setting.

Third, remember that things are going to get fuzzier when they get bigger. It is just part of life. Everything should be better when you change your screen resolution though.

Get plasma, it destroys LED/LCD in picture quality easily and are cheaper. You can get a GT25 or ST30 3d HD panasonic plasma at 42 inches for 1000 bucks and make your friends jealous as hell.

Look at Cnet's reviews Google best 3DTV or HDTV of 2011 and the top 5 are plasma's. Maybe 1 LED is in 6th place but its 3 grand.

Answer
This toshiba is a great TV.The picture quality on this TV blows away my existing HDTV I've had for a couple of years. Great for the price. But if you compare this to Samsung and Sony, then this TV gets blown away just because the options on the TV are limited. But the picture quality is fantastic, looks better than TVs at twice the price or more. I use it to watch netflix from my ps3, play ps3 games, and watch TV sports. All look great.

I know HDTV's are notorious for their built in speakers sound quality, so I was just wondering if there was one out there with some good, ready to go speakers.
If someone could just tell me 1 HDTV with better than average sound quality, they get best answer. I'm fully aware that a home theater sound system sounds better than a TV's internal speakers.

Answer
Mitsubishi has a relatively new line that features a sound projector for it's built in speakers. It uses 16 small individually amplified speakers that allow it to very directionally beam sound to various reflective points in the room. Yamaha uses the same technology in its YSP line. While it not as good as a full size surround system, with the addition of even a small subwoofer it has great sound on its own. Available in either a 52" or 46" LCD size it's also got a great picture as well.

Full Disclosure: I am a dealer for both Yamaha and Mitsubishi as well as many other television brands. I personally have the 52" version at my home.

Hi I have 2 Vizio HDTV. One is an LED and it is a 120 HZ and it is a 47 inch and the other is an LCD 47 inch one and also 120 hz. Now I am gonna give you a great example. You know for anyone who watches NBC Sunday Night Football and they go to the replay and the NBC Logo comes up to show the replay and after they show the replay the NBC Logs comes up again to go back to Live TV, well this is a great example because I notice somewhat of a lag when that happens and I see like a ghosting effect I guess and I also notice the pixels when that happens. It happens on other channels too but I notice it more on NBC Sunday Night Football. I have HD Directv with HDMI cable. So that isn't the problem. It is crazy because the other night I also watched the game on NFL Game Rewind app on the IPAD MINI and I didn't notice any lag whatsoever during the game. Is this lag or ghosting or whatever you want to call it caused by the response time of the TV or is it caused by the Refresh rate of the TV. I mean both of my Vizio TV's are doing the same thing and I even have a 3rd Sony 60 hz tv and it does it on that as well. So my questions are as follows:

1)Is the Lag caused by the Response Time or the Refresh Rate or what exactly?

2)Why is it on the IPAD Mini I didn't notice the lag?

3)I want the images to be crisp without any lag or ghosting or anything like that. What specifications on the TV should I look for?

4)For a 2013 say tv between a 30 to 39 inch what exact tv model do I look at to not see any lag etc?

5)How about a 40 to 50 inch TV which model should I look at?

6)Do I buy instead a monitor that is like 27 inch or 32 inch with an hdmi with a response time of say 1 ms. Please let me know.

Please answer each of my above 6 questions in details. Thanks.
For the Panasonic Plasma I should get a 1080P right rather than a 720P. The only problem that I have with Plasmas is that the picture is way too dim compared to the LED or LCD TV and I like a picture that is very bright. Please help. Thanks.

Answer
It's just a lag based on the distance of the TV and box from the satellite and just the broadcast in general. One of my family members had the same issue they have a 20 inch LED tv in their bedroom and a 32 inch LED tv in there living room. You can hear the TV's echo each other when on the same channel. Next the reason you didn't notice any lag on the iPad Mini is because it wasn't a live stream of it, it was a replay of what happened. So it's not looking for the live feed of the game over the internet, it's downloading it to the iPad's temporary memory just so it can play it through. This really isn't the TV at all VIZIO TV's are great options. This goes back to just DirecTV's ability to get the live video to the satellites and then to TV's across the US mainly. The only option would be to get a 240 Hz or 480 Hz HDTV but I really don't recommend that because those are mainly LCD TV's and LCD is probably the last option you want for a TV. LED is the best quality for a TV and LCD is better for a computer screen image. Overall for TV screen sizes you asked. The Best options are Samsung with there Smart HDTV's, Sharp's new IGZO display HDTV's, then Samsung is always reliable choice for HDTV's

Will the release of oled and 4k drop the price of regular tvs?

Original W

hello, i was wondering if anyone in the tv sales or home theatre communities thought that with the release of oled (organic light emiting diode) or 4k resolution tvs sometime in 2013, that the price of tvs that aren't oled or 4k will drop much like standard definition tvs dropped in price when high def came out? In case your wondering im looking at the price of a Panasonic Viera Tcp50st30. THANK YOU

Answer
Yes the prices will go down, but not all of a sudden. Like all other electronics, the prices are constantly going down. Even when HDTVs came out, the prices on standard television didn't dropped overnight. Also, OLEDs TVs and 4k TVs are still a novelty, with only very pricey model are available to the general public. It will take 2-3 years to become mainstream and to challenge the plasma/lcd/led prices.

This is especially true if you want to buy a very specific model, like your case. If you are willing to wait that model would be when the new models will come out (so the stores need to sell their old stock). This is usually in the February-April time frame.

When the T.V. industry goes 100% digital next year will that affect people that have cable boxes already?

What recommendations for new TVs under $500 do you have?

Answer
The TV industry is not going 100% digital.

Cable and Satellite are not directly affected. Only Over the air analog TV is being discontinued.
The cable industry has agreed to continue to provide analog versions of the local over the air TV until 2012, or to furnish converter boxes.

Whatever your present cable service, it shouldn't need to change.
However, you can expect some cable operators to start moving some of their analog offerings to digital, and to encourage customers to get digital service.

Over the air TV from an antenna will still be available using a digital to analog converter box. The Government is providing up to two $40 coupons per household;d towards the purchase of two converter boxes which are expected to cost about $70 or less each before coupon.

The coupons can be applied for now.

As far as recommendations for TVs is concerned, I suggest you get the December issue of Consumer Reports from your Library. They review a large number of sets. When it comes to these new digital sets, it may be very attractive to go with the lowest price you can find. The problem is that not only is the performance poorer, but the reliability and support are much poorer. For many of them, once the warranty is over, there's no service available once they fail.

Lcd 120hz vs Plasma 600hz?

I will play video games 100% or the time on one of these hdtvs. Should I go with a 720p 600hz plasma or a 1080p 120hz Lcd. Both tvs are made by the same company.

Answer
The above post is incorrect. The screen glare problem has not been solved. Plasma screens are the glossy type. When I went to best buy, i noticed severe reflections from all angles. There is even a video done by CNET on the VT30 plasma TV (last years panasonic flagship model and also the TV in my bedroom) on youtube where you can see significant reflections even in a darker room. Plasma TVs are best suited for rooms with controlled lighting. In those conditions the plasma TV will produce great PQ. Also plasma TVs consume the same amount of power as the older plasma models. You can verify this through many review sites such as FlatpanelsHD or CNET. They measure the total watts consumption per hour and have it down on a chart. If you are adamant on purchasing a plasma, then I would recommend the ST50 by Panasonic. It is their most inexpensive plasma TV and it has gotten great reviews.

Now I recommend to you a LED LCD TV for gaming. My reasons are : if you plan on gaming a long time, your TV will not overheat and burn-in issues are non-existent. (i have seen burn-ins on a panasonic vt30 after only 5 months--even with the screen wipe feature in use). Also 3D gaming is a big plus for me so the comfort of the glasses will become significant enough to where it will affect the type of TV you may purchase. You will be able to play during the day. LED LCD TVs are very bright. Most 2012 LED TVs however have a glossy screen as well. You will get some unwanted reflections. I highly recommend LG's LW series 3D LED TVs (2011 models). They have a matte screen for unparalleled brightness and since its 2012 now, should be priced even lower than its competition.

Why do you want one. Reviews are poor. They changed and discontinued it.

24" is a small TV
They were dumping them a year ago, down to $200.
Only ones you would find is someone selling an old one.

Why does an HDMI cable make my Xbox 360 games sound scratchy?

I recently purchased an HDMI cable to connect my XBOX 360 S to my HDTV. The picture quality is great; but the sound has become all scratchy and fuzzy. Why is this happening?
I don't think there is anything wrong with the cable, because i just tested it with my blu-ray player, and there is no issue with the sound. There's only a problem when I use the HDMI cable with the Xbox.

Answer
I dont know, my cousin has the same problem with his..could be a short in the wire or could be something wrong with the ports.

what's the difference between an HDTV and an LCD tv?

It's Slime

i'm planning on getting a new TV . i'm leaning more towards an LCD tv, but some saw HDTV is best. to me LCD has better quality in picture then HDTV. i really don't see any difference between regulre television and HDTV they look the same. what are your thoughts?

Answer
You are mixing apples and oranges here. LCD is a type of monitor and so is Plasma, CRT, Rear Projection, and Front Projection. HDTV is a TV Transmission standard which is like Standard Definition (SDTV), Enhanced Definition (EDTV), and High Definition (HDTV).

You can have an LCD that is HDTV compatible.

The difference in the three levels of standards mentioned above is considerable and I mentioned them in good, better, best order respectively.

You want at least EDTV but possibly HDTV because that is the direction everything is headed unless you like the idea of buying something else in the near future.

LCD is a nice alternative if you want something 36" or smaller. Larger, go with either rear projection with DLP or Plasma.

Just a note on the LCD: make sure it has a faster refresh rate of at least 16ms but 8ms is best. It will help make for a sharper image with less ghosting.

Answer
Best HDTVs (60 inches and above)

. .
Giant HDTVs are as American as extended-cab pickup trucks and the Super Bowl. Incidentally, they display the Super Bowl really nicely and may require a pickup truck to get them home from the store. If you have the room, browse this list and revel in sheer size.

Is this lg 55in tv good for the price?

Mr Myagi

Any pros and cons? Can I watch 3d channels without the glasses? Thanks

http://www.walmart.com/ip/LG-55LM4600-55-1080p-120Hz-3D-LED-1.4-ultra-slim-HDTV/21693006#Specifications

Answer
That is the entry level 3D TV from the 2012 line up (the LM in the model number is the 2012 designation, LA is the 2013 lineup).

Overall - that series is considered to be a very decent TV. For that particular model...since it is the entry level...you will have somewhat less features than the higher up in the series (LM6200, LM6700, LM7600, LM8600, LM9600)...but overall it's not much different. This particular one does not have the Smart Features of the LM6200 and up...and it also doesn't have as good of processors as the LM7600 and up, but it should be decent enough for normal use.

As far as 3D and glasses are concerned. These TV's use passive 3D...meaning that (and this is in laymans terms) the picture is filtered in a way that when the glasses are put on...the left eye sees one picture and the right eye sees another...and your brain makes it 3D. Without glasses on...it will just look like an extremely out of focus picture.

As far as cons for this unit...there are 2:

1st (and this applies to a LOT of manufacturers and not just LG).
The 120Hz "Tru Motion Rate" is not the same thing as a 120Hz refresh rate. So - though it sort-of performs like a 120Hz TV...it really is a 60Hz panel. You will find this to be the case in most of the lesser expensive models from all manufacturers.

2nd:
Given that this is a left-over 2012 model...you are already starting out with 1 year old technology. Not saying that it's not good technology...but that there is already a newer model and any 2012 models are simply left-overs that didnt sell. You should expect to see a significant savings from the 2013 models. It's hard to price-compare an overstock model...since the major retailers who would normally carry these have already replaced them with 2013 models...so you can;t always rely on a quick google shopping search...as it's likely to come up with few results.

Overall though...$800 for a 55" 3D TV is not bad...so you certainly aren;t getting hosed at that price...but you just have to realize that it's marked down because it is in fact a 1 - 2 year old tv...even though its new.
