I have a Vizio hdtv 42" connected to a Dishnetwork VIP722, how can I adjust the resolution on the TV ?.?

Miguel R

To watch the regular channels with better picture quality.

Answer
Unfortunately, you cant view standard definition[SD] content with better quality on HDTV. Looks like you have Dish Network, lucky for you, they're adding more HD channels currently and near future.

Does this HDTV look good?

Here's the TV:

http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-REGZA-42RV530U-42-inch-1080p/dp/B00140R0G2/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1212435981&sr=8-1#productDetails

It has great reviews, lots of features, etc. Please don't suggest some $2,000 TV, because I can only get ones in the $1,200 price range.

Answer
You might be one of the few to understand good TV qualities. This is a great TV. Although, I see that you are following the popular LCD trend. You may find good TV's of other type as well. As TV's go, however, this looks phenomenal. I just see that there is no 120 hz speed. This may be good if you want to watch football on your LCD TV, because the 120 hz is meant to solve a motion blur problem common in LCD's.

I have given this answer to a person just looking for a TV.

Two brands are Samsung and Sony. If you are really looking for Sony to match or overcome Samsung's quality, then you may want to get something in the bravia series and make sure it has XBR, because I believe that allows cinematic quality.

A very impressive chip used by HDTV's developed by Texas Instruments is the DLP chip, which provides awesome quality when it comes to reduced motion blur (for you football game) and has great quality. The DLP chip works greatly with the colors it gets and is especially better when you have LED, which uses more environmentally friendly, lasts longer, and gives the best color you can imagine. You can read moer about DLP and its different technologies on http://www.dlp.com (if it is up, because Texas Instruments seems to have a problem with its sites).

Samsung uses the DLP chip. By the way, you can go to cnet.com and search your specific type of TV (use the model number) and it will give you a very detailed review on your TV. That is how I got my awesome Samsung HLT-5087S. CNet goes into detail and gives specifications. It also has a TV search tool in which you can plug in what you want on your TV.

Now to tackle a big issue. 1080p, 1080i, or 720p? Well, I have a 1080p TV, which will give you the best quality with HD transmission, especially if you have Blu-Ray. But, a 1080p may not do too well with regular transmission channels, although I have seen normal channels on my 1080p TV and have no problem with them. A 1080i TV is not too competitive anymore because a 1080p has the same resolution as a 1080i, and it can much more easily manage movement than a 1080i. A 720p TV may be better if you are only going to watch channels on normal transmission.

When you get a TV, you may also want to be sure that you get at least 2 HDMI inputs on your TV, because as HD gadgets evolve, the HDMI cable will give much better picture quality than any other cable. At least, that is what I hear.

If you are looking at an LCD, make sure that TV has 120hz because it will reduce the motion blur and will be better for a football game compared to a 60hz LCD.

I would recommend that you do not get absorbed into the whole plasma TV gimmick, because it is just hype. You should just do research and see which TV will fit your home best. Do not say that you want a plasma TV and nothing else.

Again, CNet can probably help you in finding the TV matching your desires, because it gives great reviews and specifications, and it has a search tool you can use to find your type of TV. I hope this answer helps and that you get an excellent quality TV.

Quality of Samsung 42" Plasma HDTV?

Beach Love

Looking at Samsung 42" Plasma HDTV.....anyone have any advice on it? Pros/cons/ problems?

Answer
I wouildn't buy ANY plasma TV, unless you get the extended warranty, which in some cases is useless as well. I had a Samsung who's plasma screen went out 3 days after warranty. Called the warranty company and they said that because there were no longer being parts made for it, I would have to pay an additional 350.00 for a new model. Look at an LCD or LCP instead....

50" 720p or 42" 1080p HDTV?

tonk

I am upgrading (from a box TV) after searching I can get (with my money) either a 50" 720p HDTV or a 42" 1080p. My viewing distance is about 10 feet away. I will mostly be playing a ps3 on it and regular TV not so much blue ray DVDs. I am leaning towards the 50" which one do you think is better?
I have found the answer... a 50" 720p is just as clear as a 50" 1080p at a distance greater then 10 feet. Closer then 10 feet 1080p starts to become useful. If I went to the 42" I would have to sit closer then 6 feet to notice the 1080p. Thus in my situation of viewing 10-12 feet away logically and economically the 50" 720p is the best choice. I would be wasting my money for a less of a viewing experience with the 42" 1080p. Here is a chart and source http://s3.carltonbale.com/resolution_chart.html

Answer
42" 1080p HDTV
the quality will be better and the size will only be a little bit smaller. If the 8 inches make that much of a difference, than you should probably get the 50'' however the type of tv also plays a role on how it looks and works.

What's the best quality HDTV under $1000?

JessieJ

Although I'm fairly tech-friendly when it comes to computers, my head is spinning from all the HDTV advice out there. I'm simply looking for an HDTV with the best picture and most reliability for the lowest price. Could someone please break it down into the simplest terms for me?
The size question was raised. We're replacing a 32" TV with something bigger, but we haven't determined how much bigger. We have a large area to work, so size is pretty flexible.

Answer
Plasma has the best picture qualities!

They have the highest native contrast ratios(40,000:1), giving them the blackest blacks and most vivid and rich looking colors! They also have the fastest response times(.001ms) and fastest refresh rates(600hz), making them the best at fast motion content like sports, movies and gaming!

Plasma's are also the most affordable HDTV per screen size and no longer have problems with burn-in or energy consumption. For more info and facts, see this website: http://www.plasma-lcd-facts.co.uk/

However, you didn't specify what size range you are looking for. This is an important factor when searching for TV's. Plasma TV's don't come in sizes smaller then 42", so if you're looking for something 40" or less...LCD is your only option! Go with these brands of LCD; Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Sony, Sharp or Toshiba.

However, if you are looking for something 42" or larger, i highly recommend going with a Panasonic Plasma TV. Panasonic is the best performing and most reliable brand of HDTV i've ever seen!

Here are some recommendations for you:

This is their entry level, energy efficient model(TC-P42U1): http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9244301&type=product&id=1218066284214

This is a mid-level, energy efficient model(TC-P42S1): http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9317287&type=product&id=1218084032650

I have a 42" Samsung 1080i Plasma HDTV. How can I improve the quality of my TV? I have a PS3 and it's connected with a HDMI Cable. The quality/graphics are the same as it was for the 62" LCD 1080p LCD HDTV. So how can I improve the quality, or possibly upgrade from 1080i to 1080p?

Answer
samsung tvs usually have a firmware that you can try to update to improve known issues with quality, but you are limited by the tv hardware for picture quality. If the TV is 1080i then that is what you are getting. Are you playing games or watching bluray? Are the games in 1080?

Answer
Display models at retail stores do get a lot of usage early in their life, having to run constantly, often with settings such as contrast and color turned way up to make the picture quality look better under the bright lighting of the store. As such, it is possible. Always avoid buying display models if you can. Another possibility is that the TV might not be connected to a 1080p source.

I have a Vizio 42" HDTV with built-in apps (Netflix, hulu etc.). Moving in to a new apartment with a decent sized living room and I'm looking for a home theater system with good sound quality and home theater experience. Preferably something that includes a DVD/blu-ray player.

I have no experience in purchasing home entertainment units. So, I'd greatly appreciate your recommendations.

Answer
Well you don't say what your budget is and I have the feeling that you want to buy one of those all in one or "HTIB" systems (Home Theater In a Box) from a brand like Coby, Sony Panasonic, RCA, etc,. I can't in good conscience recommend one of those. The quality of the individual components is always poor, they cut a lot of corners and the main unit that plays DVDs and whatnot also serves as the receiver, or amplifier. When one part malfunctions (and they do quite frequently if you look at some of the questions on here about using the speakers than come with those things with standard receivers) you are stuck with a bunch of other stuff that you can't use with anything else. My best advice is to look over AV Home Theater Receivers. They serve as a main unit into which you plug everything, Speakers, TV DVD player, CD payer etc,. When set up right they will automatically switch both the video and audio signals - meaning that the TV picture will match whatever sound it is playing. Marantz, Onkyo, Pioneer, Denon and Yamaha make excellent AV receivers. You can go to their web sites and find lists of all their AV receivers such as this:
http://www.us.onkyo.com/prod_class.cfm?class=Receiver
Onkyo, and others, also have "package deals" with individual components such as this:
http://www.us.onkyo.com/prod_class.cfm?class=Systems
As you have no experience purchasing electronic audio / video equipment you will probably want to go with something like that. You will also probably want to go to the web sites of the other manufacturers I mentioned and see what they offer along those lines. But as I said, I'd try to stay away from anything that has a DVD player built into the main unit. Buy one separately.

Will I get a picture on an HDTV without HD service?

RR

I just recieved my 42" HDTV and I want to set it up. Directtv is not coming to install the HD recievers for another 2 days though. Will I be able to still watch TV with analog, for the next few days? Will the picture just not be as great? Thank you.

Answer
Yea, you can still use the analog chanels, but the quality just wont be as great. It probably picks up digital chanels, though, which are x.1 or x.2 (x=channel)

Answer
You need to buy an HDMI cable. They are expensive if you buy them brand name, but if you don't then you can buy them somwhere inbetween $5- $20.

What is the best HDMI cable for a Apple TV?

Durden

I have a Vizio 42 inch HDTV. Quality is of the upmost importance along with there being zero lag and interference.

Answer
Monoprice.com has high quality HDMI cables. If you want a thinner cable or need to so long distances, check out their Redmere cables. If you are unsure of the exact length you need, you can order a couple of different sizes and give the ones you don't use away. Their cables are low cost and shipping doesn't go up much when you add items to your cart.

What is the best HDTV at a quality price?

Tim

I would like 40-42'' Tv. I also need a new tv stand to hold my stereo, cABLE BOX, PS3, etc. Any ideas?

Answer
When you are trying to balance quality and price, you're going to find that different TV technologies are better in different environments and for different viewing purposes (TV shows, Blu-Ray, Gaming, etc).

For example, Plasma TV screens are usually made of glass (very reflective) so you wouldn't want to place these in a bright sunny room. On the other hand, Plasma's handle fast motion for sports and video games better than most LCD's and are cheaper at larger screen sizes.

With LCD's, the screen usually has a matte finish so they are more suitable for bright rooms with a lot of direct sunlight coming in, but they come in smaller screen sizes and cost more "per inch". If you are gaming on the X-Box or PS3..there are certain LCD's that are going to handle fast motion gaming better than others.

This is especially important for input lag with games that depend on accurate timing of controller actions such as first person shooters (Call of Duty, Halo, etc), sports and fighting games (Madden, Street Fighter, MLB, etc) and music games (Guitar Hero, Rockband, etc).

Now since you mentioned price...bear in mind that features such as 3D, Internet-connectivity, Social Media Apps (Twitter, Facebook, Netflix, Hulu, etc), will add to the price. You can still spend less than $1000 and get a great 40-42" TV in a Panasonic (VIERA's are great), Sony (Bravia's are excellent), and Samsung (Look for Aquos models with Gaming Mode). LG is nice as well.

If you don't want to do that much in-depth research and want to get the right TV the first time around, you should consider using The HDTV Genie which eliminates the research and guess work in finding the best TV at a quality price for your own specific needs.
