HDTV cable quality?

If I get an HD box for watching cable, will it really make the pictures crystal clear , just like the ones in stores? I have a new HDTV tv, but still using analog, as there is no HD service in my area.

There is some variation in quality from cable company to cable company, but, generally, the answer is yes. see if you can find one of your local stores that uses cable for feeding their TVs. Then, you can see what you're getting in advance.

How is SD quality on and HDTV?

My wife and I are considering buying an HDTV. We watch a lot of SD programming currently, however, and we're wondering about the quality of these channels on the new TV. I would think that they would display fine but I've heard some HDTVs don't display SD as well as a normal SDTV. Is there any truth to this? I'd hate to buy a new TV only to find out it doesn't look as good as our old one in some cases.

On my 3 HDTVs, digital SD programs look fine. As clear as the best picture you used to see on an old analog TV.

But what doesn't look good on an HDTV is an analog channel on basic cable (no box). HDTVs are digital technology, and they work best with a digital input. An analog signal has to be compromised in order to be displayed on an HDTV, and the result is often not as good as the same signal on an old analog set.

But aside from that, *digital* SD programming looks fine on any HDTV that I've seen.

HDMI poor quality with HDTV?

I'm using a Asus EAH 4870 graphic card connected to LG 32" Full HD TV with a DVI to HDMI connector.
The problem is my HDMI display is horrible. The display is blurry and even analog output is clearer then HDMI. I'd tried installing the latest driver for VGA but no avail. My current resolution is 1920 x 1080. Please advice what should i do.
My TV native resolution is 1920 x 1080p. I'd tried to switch to that resolution but still no go.

I've also noticed poor HDMI video quality with Asus cards.

I bought an Asus EAH3450 video card for use in my HTPC, and when i hooked it up to my big-screen 1080p LCD HDTV (1920x1080 native) using a DVI-to-HDMI cable, it causes my TV to underscan the image (shrink the image down so there is a black border all the way around the edge of the screen). Underscan squishes the pixels and it looks blurry. No matter what I do, I can't get it to do 1:1 pixel mapping with my HDTV over the digital connection. When I connect the EAH3450 via analog VGA, it can do 1:1 pixel mapping but the HDTV sometimes syncs the signal wrong and it's off-center.

I have since swapped that Asus EAH3450 for a Sapphire HD4650 and I was able to get 1:1 pixel-mapping right out of the box using DVI-to-HDMI. I'm never buying Asus video cards ever again.

However, you didn't specify what size range you are looking for. This is an important factor when searching for TV's. Plasma TV's don't come in sizes smaller then 42", so if you're looking for something 40" or less...LCD is your only option! However, if you are looking for something 42" or larger, i highly recommend going with a Panasonic Plasma TV. Panasonic is the best performing and most reliable brand of HDTV i've ever seen!

If the box has component cable (red, green, and blue), you can use that to improve the quality of the image. If that's not available, using S-video will be your second best bet to improve the quality.

If it's fuzzy or distorted like not very clear then see if hooking up component or hdmi cables to it clears it up otherwise it's the tv. If you watch regular tv on hdtv it's worse quality than regular tv because it's showing weakness when it's meant for high quality.

An artifact is a general term that refers to anything that was not faithfully reproduced. It covers a lot of ground.

The most noticeable artifacts are those that cause jagged edges or smears but just about any defect due to the encoding and decoding process an / or display anomalies could qualify.

I'm looking to buy a 34 to 42 inch flat screen, high quality, hdtv or plasma or LCD or whatever, Television sometime soon.
Any advice in general for buying/shopping for one?
Would I be better off purchasing it before or after Christmas?
Any advice in particular for buying one in Manhattan?

It doesn't really matter if you buy your tv before or after christmas. Most retailers have those price match policy for 1 month for appliances- that if you buy it now for that low price and the price changed after a week, you can then have that price matched if you go to their customer service and show them your receipt.

At 16-22 inches go for a 720p LCD or Plasma. Unless you are sitting very close to your screen or using it for a computer display, 1080p is going to be overkill.

At 16-22 inches and 720p, most big brands will offer about the same quality (There really havent been any advancements for panels that small at 720p in a while, manufactures are focusing on larger 1080p sets now). Try to stick with a major brand and youll be fine: Samsung, Toshiba, Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, LG..

You could even look into a 22-24" Dell LCD monitor that has DVI and Component inputs.. the downside with this youll need a cable box/direct tv to play video on it and youll need some sort of extra sound set-up since the Dell LCD monitors dont have speakers built in.

How come HDTVs (mainly LCDs) in stores have bad pictures?

Q. I was checking some HDTVs out the other day and the pictures look cloudy. It's weird because I have an emachines computer which in some people's opinion is a cheap computer brand and when I watch HD stuff on YouTube or wherever it looks amazing, yet here are these Sonys, Samsungs, Pannys and LGs with terrible pictures. How is it that my cheap little computer can generate a better HD picture than these high quality HDTVs?

It could actually be psychological thing, maybe your really used to seeing what you do on your monitor, so your brain is having a hard time adjusting to what is "true HD". but another thing is. Youtube is NOT by far anything close to true HD 1080p. Youtube "HD" is only 720p resolution. Another thing is that a lot of times the TV's at let's say Best Buy and store's like that, the TVs are not properly adjusted. The best brand's for TV's for quality and best image quality are Sony, SAMSUNG, and Sharp. If your shopping for a new HDTV, next time you go there ask a store employee to show you the basic's of HDTV's.

Do those DVD upconverters really work on HD TV's at improving the picture quality?

i just got those lord of the rings extended DVD's but they probably wont look like a bluray quality on my HDTV. however i went to walmart and saw they have these cheap $40 dvd upconverters that are supposed to make dvd's look near-HD. but does anyone know just how well these work? would it really improve the picture quality for a HDTV? has anyone here tried this out?

no. your good quality HDTV has built in capability to convert standard DVD output to match the native resolution of its screen. makers of HDTV sets know that their customers want to watch DVD movies, so they design a very good converter into the set. using an external scan converter may actually reduce the quality of the visual presentation.
