FEEDBACK

I need to buy an at least 50'' TV for my new apartment.

I want to know which TV is objectively the best on the market right now. I've been looking at a couple Plasma, and LED/LCD screens, but I can't seem to pick which one is the best.

I can't stand 3D, so please avoid picking 3D TVs. In theory, the best HDTV could be 3D-capable, but I'm not willing to pay for 3D when I'm never going to use it.

Help me figure out which one is the BEST NON-3D HDTV right now on the market. As long as it doesn't have 3D, price is not an issue.

Thank you!

If you collect all three stamps at McDonalds for their monopoly contest, do you automatically win that prize?

Zack and B

I've been playing the McDonald's monopoly thing and have almost collected all of one color and I want to know if you definitely win that prize.

Answer
Ah, the McDonald's Monopoly game... chasing after that one color stamp to win the big prize. If only it was that simple.

First of all, if you like McDonald's and you are happy about winning a food prize, its ok to play. Here's how it breaks down:•Medium Fries ($1.75) – Odds 1 in 9, or 11.1% chance you win.
• Quarter Pounder w/ Cheese ($3.60) – Odds 1 in 44, or 2.3% chance you win.
• Small McCafe or Smoothie ($2.40) – Odds 1 in 44, or 2.3% chance you win.
• McFlurry ($2.55) – Odds 1 in 44, or 2.3% chance you win.
• Breakfast Sandwich ($2.65) — Odds 1 in 22, or 4.6% chance you win

The other instant prizes (winning a DVD rental from a Red Box) to headphones are tougher. The DVD is 1 in 101 and the odds go up from there.

Now for the challenge - getting the properties. The truth is that whatever property group you need, one space is much, much, much more difficult to get than the others. Take the Red group (Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky) which gives you one of 40 plane tickets - the odds of getting Indiana or Illinois are around 1 in 10. The odds of getting Kentucky Ave., however, is 1 in 15 million.

Here is a list of the odds for all of the properties (plus the toughest one of each set to obtain):
BROWN: Mediterranean Ave, odds 1 in 30 million wins $1,000.
• LIGHT BLUE: Vermont Ave, odds 1 in 40 million, wins $5,000.
• PINK: Virginia Ave, odds 1 in 200 million, wins $10,000
• ORANGE: Tennessee Ave, odds 1 in 602 million, wins Super Bowl tickets.
• RED: Kentucky Ave, odds 1 in 15 million, wins one of 40 plane tickets for two.
• YELLOW: Ventnor Ave, odds 1 in 300 million, wins $20,000
• GREEN: Pennsylvania Ave, odds 1 in 40 million, wins one of 15 Fiat cars.
• BLUE: Boardwalk, 1 in 602 million, wins $1,000,000 in $50,000 annual payments.
• RAILROADS: Short Line railroad, 1 in 150 million, wins a year's supply of gas.

Do you see the challenge? It's not getting two of the three properties, it's getting the extremely scarce third one.

Here, btw, are the odds for winning the non-food prizes:
40 point MyCoke Reward (or medium Coke) - 1 in 151
$5 McDonald's Arch card - 1 in 21,518
EA Sports $10 promo code - 1 in 161
$10 Shell Gift Card - 1 in 60,250
Hasbro Monopoly Board Game - 1 in 60,250
$25 Shell Gift Card - 1 in 86,071
Shutterfly 8x8 PhotoBook - 1 in 302
EA Sports Game - 1 in 35,441
$50 - 1 in 60,250
ur Beats Earphones - 1 in 4,061,000
$100 - 1 in 105,701
Panasonic Lumix TS20 Digital Still camera - 1 in 1,506,202
Beats by Dr. Dre Phil Speaker - 1 in 4,016,601
Headphones - 1 in 301,245,030
Panasonic Viera 50-inch Plasma HDTV - 1 in 10,401,541
$5,000 - 1 in 40,166,041
EA Sports NFL Game Experience - 1 in 10,041,541
Beaches Resorts Vacation - 4,634,539
Ace Hardware $7,500 Home Fix-Up - 1 in 31,710,004
NFL Pro Bowl Experience - 30,124,503
2013 Fiat 500 Hatchback - 1 in 60,249,006
2013 Fiat 500 Cabrio - 1 in 60,249,006
$20,000 - 1 in 200,830,020
$100,000 - 1 in 301,245,030

So the morale of the story is if you want to win Medium Fries, you have a good chance of going away happy; otherwise, don't count on anything else.

Will an HDMI cable have any effect on picture quality with a PS3 connected to a 720p TV?

I have a Vizio 32" LCD HDTV that displays in 720p, as well as a PS3. If I hook it up with an HDMI cable instead of the Red-White-Yellow cord, will it have any effect on the picture quality?

Answer
Compared to red-white-yellow, yes. Red-white-yellow (actually just Yellow) is just Composite, which does only 480i

Compared to Component ( red-green-blue-red-white), not for gaming anyways. Both it and HDMI do 720p or better.

Which is better, LCD or Plasma tv in the 32" size range?

Scrappy Co

I'm planning on buying a 32" hdtv. Well my option was panasonic lx80 but I've read in some forums that plasma tvs have better picture quality compared to lcd panels. I'm planning on using this on ps3 gaming, movie watching and as pc monitor. So anybody could please help me regarding this? And could please someone explain it by having the pros, cons and explanation. Thanks!

Answer
That small, it makes no real sense to get Plasma.
LCD is the only economical option.

Does the ps4 have the av color wires? Or u need hdmi in order to use it?

Answer
It will only support HDMI now. Some recent games on the PS3 actually had visual problems because of people who were still using composite cables. DarkSiders 2 and Skyrim come to mind.

You'll need to get your hands on a HDTV and some cables. I recommend getting a T.V. no bigger than 32" and get your HDMI cable off of Amazon since they have cables available for as little as $2 (and all HDMi cables do the same thing, no matter the price).

Use this interactive model of the PS4, and look at the back. You'll see that there's only HDMI and nothing on other video output cables.

Hello, I'm planning on saving up for a Samsung LED HDTV. I'd like it to be 55 inches or more, I don't really care to have smart technology, and I'd love for it to be one of the ultra slim ones. It seems for 55 inches I'll be paying about 1100 dollars, for 60 inches its 1300 dollars, and any more than that, they automatically add the smart technology so its 2,500 or above. But I was just wondering how much a tv's price may drop in about a year from now. I've seen that 55 inch LED's used to be 2200 dollars but now they are 800-1200. How much do these prices usually drop in about a year with the new technology?

This is the tv I plan on buying:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+60%26%2334%3B+Class+-+LED+-+1080p+-+120Hz+-+HDTV/6847446.p?id=1218809261672&skuId=6847446

Answer
It's a tough thing to figure.

A particular model that you like may have a limited shelf-life. Manufacturers tend to make new models in order to keep prices up. Though the price of model 55-123LED (making this model number up) may be $1500 right now...conventional wisdom means that this model should be cheaper next year. The problem is that the manufacturer stops making this model and replaces it with the 55-321LED. Though it is completely identical to the old one...it is a 2013 model and therefore will still be worth the $1500 as a 'current' model.

The best time to purchase last years model is just before/just after the new ones hit the shelves. Stores will cut prices to make room for the new ones. If you wait to long though...you will find last years models hard to find.

A couple of tips for you:
A Good sale can happen anytime. It doesn't have to be Black Friday, Columbus Day, etc. Keep an eye on weekly ads from the major retailers in your area...as well as the online shops. With Price-Matching (which most major retailers offer)...anyone's sale could be a sale for your local store.

Don;t be afraid to ask for a discount. You have to believe that EVERYTHING is negotiable. You don;t have to be rude about it...just a simple "Is there any other way to save money on this TV?" I got 5% off my TV at Fry's Electronics simply by calling the manager over and asking if they're was any way he could save a few bucks (told him I was just a bit short on covering the full cost + taxes). Salesman/managers may know of coupons, etc that can save a few bucks.

Does it still worth to buy a PS3 FAT?

Dvid

Lets face it. Its 2013. Still I would like to ask: should I invest? Im planning on buying a cheap first gen PS3, I would renovate it by cleaning it and changing thermal paste, adding a new, large hard drive. I am also planning on buying a cheap HDTV to use with it. I want to buy it becouse I want to play some games that are only available on the PS platform, but also any games I can get my hands on. But the big question: should I invest in buying a first gen PS3 that probably was made in 2006 or 2007? Also is there a noticeable difference between the SLIM and the FAT versions? I need advice, please help.
Please note that I dont want to wait for the PS4 becouse I dont have the money for that thing....

Answer
If you don't plan on getting a ps4 right away then ya get a ps3, but you should get a slim as they're more reliable.

. .
Giant HDTVs are as American as extended-cab pickup trucks and the Super Bowl. Incidentally, they display the Super Bowl really nicely and may require a pickup truck to get them home from the store. If you have the room, browse this list and revel in sheer size.

Blu ray players and viewing distance?

best quality hdtv 2012 image

Yoda

I've read alot about proper viewing distances for viewing blu ray movies and HDTV. My viewing distance is way outside of the range. I have a 65" RP CRT which is 1080i, and my viewing distance is about 16 feet away. Is buying a blu ray a player a waste of my money or should I invest in a good upconvert dvd player instead.

Answer
Invest in a Blu-ray player as the quality is great. Even on my HDCP 20" 720p monitor the difference between DVD and Blu-ray is huge, you won't notice the bad quality that DVD has until you watch a Blu-ray Disc movie, even the bad discs are good.

The interactivity is also good if you buy a bonus view player as Blu-ray Disc gives PiP, and Hi-def audio, and upscaled DVD isn't anything as good as Blu-ray Discs. Anyway a DVD upscaler can't upscale audio of interactivity.

However do you have a HDMI connection, because over component which is analouge the studios can freely downconvert the signal into DVD quality, due to the Image Constaint Token, or deny to play in the near future (Digital Only Token (DOT)). Some third parties say that they won't use it until 2010 to 2012, but it is not confirmed, and the studios can use it if they wish, anyway since the format war is over, it might be used. Check wheither you have HDMI, as far as I know not many CRT's have HDMI.

16 Feet away is a huge distance but, since you have a large screen it will look a lot better than DVD, but 10 Feet will be ideak for you.

Blu-ray is great, but make sure you have HDMI, as component isn't future proof. Also buy a PS3 as it's cheap and it can do Bonus View and BD LIVE where most players can't, be upgrade only PS3's and PC Drives can be upgraded.

But since you have a HUGE screen Blu-ray will be a good investment, even if you don't have HDMI (as only Warner hasn't really said wheither they will not use it, and 2010-2012 is a long time), and also if you don't have HDMI I don't think upconvert DVD players can upconvert with component, they might be able to with VGA, not sure though.

But....... if you don't won't to spend money on Blu-ray pickup a HD DVD player with HDMI, for a sweet upconverter, and you can take advantage of the clearance of over 300 HD DVD titiles like Harry Potter, Transformers , Poseidon , Shrek, Troy and much more, and build up a massive library in you home. It has to be noted that if you won't buy Blu-ray, HD DVD players are the BEST upconverters, and they are going dead cheap though to the format war, and it is always neglected that HD DVD players can upscale very well, but it will always be second rate compared with Blu-ray, or a native HD source.

In the end it depends with you, but if you are going for Blu-ray buy a PS3 with a HDMI connection, and check wheither you have HDMI, as you won't get upscaled DVD's without it most of the time. Still for the time being Blu-ray can do HD via analouge component up to 1080i (which you have), and VGA can do full HD ( no point for 1080i though).

So have a think about it, in the end it's about your budget, but since you have a large TV Blu-ray should be better than DVD even if it is upscaled, anyway you can't be sure that all DVD upscalers are good, although HD DVD players are good upscalers.

But on an upside Blu-ray has better picture quality, better audio (dependant on players decoders for audio) and more interactivity (dependant on Player Profiles).

Will the dvd recorder - vcr combo have to be HDTV compatable?

Kay K

I'm considering purchasing the dvd recorder - vcr player and need help in selecting an easy to operate system. Also, will it be obsolete in 2009 when all TV's will be HDTV? Can CD-RW be used as a DVD disc?

Answer
First of all, not all TVs will be HDTV. On February 17th, 2009, TV stations will stop broadcasting in analog signal and start broadcasting in digital. You will now receive digital television (DTV). The only people this will affect are people who are using an antennae to receive their signal. If you receive cable or satellite, they will be allowed to continue broadcasting in analog signal until at least 2012. If they choose to do otherwise, they must let you know.

Secondly, DTV does NOT mean HDTV. HDTV is the best quality of DTV. There are two other levels - SDTV and EDTV. After Feb 17th, 2009, all new TV's must be equipped with a digital tuner. Most new TVs now already have digital tuners in them; and most new TVs are HDTV compatible, but you must pay extra through your provider for HDTV service.

Thirdly, with most major studies switching over to Blu-Ray format, you're better off buying a BluRay player, and not DVD. If you're looking to record TV shows, get a TiVo.

Finally, no, CD-RWs cannot be used as a DVD disc. It is a different format. Your DVD recorder will be able to read a CD-RW, but it will most likely not be able to burn to it.

If the box has component cable (red, green, and blue), you can use that to improve the quality of the image. If that's not available, using S-video will be your second best bet to improve the quality.

What type of picture quality do you get if you hook a coax cable to an HD TV? I know a cable box gives you optimal picture quality. It's an xmas idea for my grandmother, she has an ancient TV and thought this may be better than what she has now. She doesn't have a cable box and won't want to spend the monthly charges for the equipment. Is the picture quality better than an old school tube tv?

Answer
It depends. HDTVs in the U.S. all come with at least two tuners, one for over-the-air digital and one for old-style analog. If your new TV has only those two tuners and you connect it to basic cable service (no box), you can expect the cable channels to look worse than on the old TV. The reason is an HDTV is a digital receiver, and it must compromise an analog signal in order to display it.

Now, most HDTVs come with an optional 3rd tuner, QAM. That's for unencrypted digital channels on the cable, and most cable systems have them. Some of those channels will be in HD and will look as good as any HD source. QAM channels are mainly the local broadcast stations.

Caveat: the days of unencrypted digital channels on cable in the U.S. are numbered. In fact, the point will eventually be reached where there are no channels at all that don't require some type of set top box. The FCC is lifting some of those requirements at the end of 2012, so anyone investing in something related to basic cable today needs to plan ahead for the eventual requirement to upgrade to a box.

My living room is12x14.I need what size hdtv should i get?I will mainly be watching Sporting events and movies.I will be setting about 10 ft from it.Also can i get a plasma for under $800 bucks?

Answer
at 10', for sports and movies you should get a tv over 50". As large as you can up to about 65" would work. So it's whatever you can afford. With Plasma, stay with Panasonic for a good quality pic. Under $800, check around, maybe?

How come my brand new antena doesnt work well? Could it be my TV is too old?

John

I have the digital converter and bought a good HDTV antenna for about $60 and I still don't get more than a couple of channels. Could it be the TV itself?

Answer
> Could it be my TV is too old?

No. Only your converter box and antenna matter.

Your old TV only displays what your converter sends it. If it displays one channel OK, then it's not the problem.

>good HDTV antenna for about $60

How much you payed for the antenna has nothing to do with how good it is.

Things that do matter:

1.
Model of converter box. Some have better tuners than others. It's hard to beat the Zenith model for receiving poor quality signals.

2.
As part of the transition, quite a few digital stations are changing their transmitter frequencies. Most converter boxes (and new HDTVs for that matter) have to be "rescanned" to find these frequencies. Some converters even need a "double rescan".

3.
Some "so called" HDTV antennas can't even receive some of the frequencies used for DTV. You need to select an antenna based on your local conditions.

Are all your stations UHF or are there some VHF? Unlike analog broadcasts, you can't tell this by the channel number used for digital broadcasts; you have to look at a web site like tvfool.com and find the "analog equivalent" or "real" channel number.

4.
Indoor antennas are always a hit or miss sort of thing. Location can make a big difference. Probably the best place to start is with a 10' - 20' length of coax cable and see if you can find a "sweet spot" for TV reception. Look at the direction to your local TV transmitters and think about what the TV signals have to go through to reach your antenna.

Do those DVD upconverters really work on HD TV's at improving the picture quality?

best picture quality on hdtv

Mike D

i just got those lord of the rings extended DVD's but they probably wont look like a bluray quality on my HDTV. however i went to walmart and saw they have these cheap $40 dvd upconverters that are supposed to make dvd's look near-HD. but does anyone know just how well these work? would it really improve the picture quality for a HDTV? has anyone here tried this out?

Answer
All these upconverting DVD players do is convert the 480p DVD video signal to 1080p before sending it to the TV, whereas typical progressive-scan DVD players send the 480p video signal (or 480i if component video cables are not used or if it's an older low-end DVD player) to the TV, which means the TV has to do the upscaling to whatever its native resolution is.

As a rule of thumb, it's always best to do any video processing, including upscaling, as close to the original video source as possible to avoid any signal degradation. But of course you can't create something out of nothing, so ultimately it's still a 480p video signal. Whether or not you actually see an improvement in picture quality depends on the size of the TV and the quality of your TV's video processor. Most of the time the improvement will be negligible, but it's just one less thing that the TV has to do.

How can I get the best possible picture quality on my LED HDTV?

Dr.Jackal

I've recently purchased a 50" Sony Bravia 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV and while the picture quality of quite good straight out of the box, I'm sure it could be better. I haven't really altered the settings at all so does anyone know if there are particular settings to get the best possible picture? I do have it hooked up with a HDMI cable.

Answer
You cannot use anybody elses numbers because the adjustments are there to compensate for YOUR source devices, your cable and your particular television.

Go get a Pixar BluRay or DVD. In the disk setup menu you will find test patterns and instructions on setting your basic Brightness, Contrast and Color. This is important because televisions are set to nearly 100% brightness and contrast at the factory to be 'eye-catching' if the unit is used for a floor demo. Properly setting these values - will NOT look as good at first. But fine details will become noticeable, wide areas of solid colors will be more solid and not swirl with other colors, etc.

This is a basic calibration you are doing. You can always order the new Disney WOW disk, the Speiers and Munsel or good old Digital Video Essentials. These disks have more test patterns, are more involved but give you lots of great tutorials.

Start with a Pixar disk. This may be all you need.

Also - go into the TV and turn OFF various optional processing like 'motion flow' and other things. While these things do make motion smoother and make some details pop out - it can create un-natural effects like the 'soap-opera' effect. (Once you see this - you will know what I am talking about.)

Oh - and congratulations on the purchase.

what is the best quality hdtv flat panel that has a pretty good price as well.. im gonna be using it for my college dorm room...around 16-22 inches

Answer
At 16-22 inches go for a 720p LCD or Plasma. Unless you are sitting very close to your screen or using it for a computer display, 1080p is going to be overkill.

At 16-22 inches and 720p, most big brands will offer about the same quality (There really havent been any advancements for panels that small at 720p in a while, manufactures are focusing on larger 1080p sets now). Try to stick with a major brand and youll be fine: Samsung, Toshiba, Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, LG..

You could even look into a 22-24" Dell LCD monitor that has DVI and Component inputs.. the downside with this youll need a cable box/direct tv to play video on it and youll need some sort of extra sound set-up since the Dell LCD monitors dont have speakers built in.

How come HDTVs (mainly LCDs) in stores have bad pictures?

Q. I was checking some HDTVs out the other day and the pictures look cloudy. It's weird because I have an emachines computer which in some people's opinion is a cheap computer brand and when I watch HD stuff on YouTube or wherever it looks amazing, yet here are these Sonys, Samsungs, Pannys and LGs with terrible pictures. How is it that my cheap little computer can generate a better HD picture than these high quality HDTVs?

Answer
It could actually be psychological thing, maybe your really used to seeing what you do on your monitor, so your brain is having a hard time adjusting to what is "true HD". but another thing is. Youtube is NOT by far anything close to true HD 1080p. Youtube "HD" is only 720p resolution. Another thing is that a lot of times the TV's at let's say Best Buy and store's like that, the TVs are not properly adjusted. The best brand's for TV's for quality and best image quality are Sony, SAMSUNG, and Sharp. If your shopping for a new HDTV, next time you go there ask a store employee to show you the basic's of HDTV's.

I only own a regular Xbox, and am planning to buy a new console.

My question is this: Am I too late in buying gaming console? Should I wait until something else comes out? WILL something come out in the near future?
Anyone have any information or opinions?

Answer
Nobody knows what the next generation will look like or when it will be released. Anyone who says they know is a big fat LIAR cause they haven't even been designed.

In fact, the technology doesn't even exist yet to make them. Look at the number of cores in xbox360 and ps3: 3 and 8. Each on a 3.2ghz clock cycle. The last couple years have seen the death of Moore's law, which predicted the number of transistors on an IC would double every 18 months. They can't do it anymore because there's a heat barrier, so they had to resort to making multiple cores and pretending it was one "chip." It is hard to make software for and generates even more total heat than it would if they had just stuck with single core without making it any faster. But they can't do that, because the industry expects Moore-compliant products.

Look at any pc on the market today, are there any cpu's clocked faster than 4 ghz yet? No, and they don't even sell them that fast, you have to overclock them. Every new pc is at least a dual nowadays, up to 4 and it looks like they'll be going 8 soon. About to finally catch up with the ps3 except their multithreading still isn't as advanced as the Cell's is, or as good for running 3d game engines either.

So what will they make a ps4 out of? A new Cell with 16 cores? Don't bet on developers lining up to make games for that. It would also overheat like crazy. Circuit width tech is down to 45nm now, but it took three years, since the original ps3's on 90nm. That's not a very fast increase, it would never make a 16-core console realistic. Likewise if Microsoft wanted to take xbox to the next level they'd have to release some kind of 8-core goliath, it would make the red ring of death look like an ice cream social at the south pole. The tech is not there; there is no design. Not even a concept.

Now, the Wii can and probably will upgrade, but that's not gonna make it the first of the next generation. It will make it the last of the current generation, just as Wii is the last of the last generation. The only next gen part of Wii is the controller, and that is an accessory. The console is a 700mhz single-core putz. It is no more powerful than your original xbox. It can't output HD, it has no web browser, it is limited in a zillion ways. If they redesign it to have a dual-core at the standard 2 to 3ghz, then it will outperform the old wii by leaps and bounds. But it will only be a current-gen console. I don't expect them to upgrade the cpu though, only the graphics chip to make it HD capable. Because Nintendo has long feared the US digital transition when suddenly zillions of people will have new HDTV's and realize standard def really kind of sucks.

The console that will last the longest is the ps3, because it has the most advanced cpu and also the best gpu of the bunch. (400gflops compared to 240gflops for xbox's gpu). They're wasting their time on motion sensing right now, which the ps3 has done since it was released and also with the playstation eye, and xbox knows it can't make a better console yet either so it's trying to get your grandmother to play too. Motion sensing control is a joke.

There will not be any real current gen consoles released before the year 2013. Only portables.

I would like to buy a 42-47 inches 3D tv?

de elenda

I don't know much about led, LCD or plasma. I just want have great 3d experience and it should have good picture quality. Can anyone suggest which tv should I buy?

Or should I wait till 2013 to buy one..?
P.s. I don't care about Internet and other fancy stuff

Answer
3D technology has not been a big hit in the electronic industry. At this time there are only around 130 titles available in 3D blu ray disc movies and they are mainly animated movies from disney. Keep in mind that to watch in 3D you will need the following: 3D HDTV, 3D blu ray disc player ot a game console, 3D blu ray disc movie or 3D video game and 3D glasses. You also have to sit in front of the tv to get the 3D effect. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on 3D HDTV, along with the pro and con of each technology. Panasonic Plasma is the only Plasma tv they recommend. They also have more pllasma tv being recommended than any type of tv from other manufacturer. Hope this will help you out.

What is the biggest affordable TV that does not cost that much?

What's the biggest flat screen TV that I can use at home? I don't want to pay that much for a new big flat screen TV. Please give me some links from either Coscto or Target or Bestbuy that have good affordable TV's.

Answer
How about an actual budget? Affordable to one person might mean $1,000. It could be $2,000 to someone else, and perhaps $3,000 to another person. The word affordable doesn't really mean anything in this situation frankly.

Don't skimp on quality whatever you do. Be willing to go down a size if it means sticking with a higher end brand or a better quality model/series from a given brand. The mid-range models are usually the best bang for the buck. The entry level ones models, even from the top tier brands, can be attractive price wise, but can sometimes lack important features that really impact video and/or audio quality.

Panasonic, Sony, Sharp, Samsung, LG, and Toshiba are all your friends. I would confine your search and eventual purchase to one of those brands. They are all really strong manufacturers. I would recommend avoiding any other brands.

37" or smaller, you really only need a basic HDTV. A CCFL 720p 60Hz LCD will serve you just fine. Paying for the "advanced" features in those sizes doesn't garner much return on the investment (poor bang for the buck since you don't really notice the difference of having those features very much).

40" - 46" is a grey area. Some people like to start going with advanced options like 1080p (Plasma and LCD), 120Hz/240Hz refresh rates (LCD only), LED backlights (LCD only), or going with Plasma (over any form of LCD). Others feel that you can still get a great HD experience with the basic options. I lean towards going advanced feature set, but know people that have gone basic and absolutely love their HD viewing experience. Best way to sort that out for yourself, go into a store and look with your own eyes. See if it makes a difference for you.

50"+ you want advanced features. At that point I would really highly recommend going with a 1080p Plasma.

Check out Amazon.com for prices. They often have some of the best prices/sales all year round. That can give you a good sense of what you should pay for the TV you want. Also, if you can find a store that will price match them, all the better (if you chose to not buy from them).

Some good, what I consider, large sized, and affordable HDTVs,

Panasonic TC-P50G10 - http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-VIERA-TC-P50G10-50-Inch-Plasma/dp/B001UAEWUS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1262283421&sr=8-1 or the slightly updated G15 - http://www.abcwarehouse.com/product_catalog/pc_proddetails.asp~assort_id~1300~prod_ID~24260

Panasonic TC-P50S1 - http://www.abcwarehouse.com/product_catalog/pc_proddetails.asp~assort_id~1300~prod_ID~26126 - still a great TV, a bit less contrast to the G series, but still a top performer

SHARP AQUOS LC46E77U/UN - http://www.abcwarehouse.com/product_catalog/pc_proddetails.asp~assort_id~1300~prod_ID~24089

SONY KDL52V5100 - http://www.abcwarehouse.com/product_catalog/pc_proddetails.asp~assort_id~1300~prod_ID~26080

Samsung 46B750 - http://www.abcwarehouse.com/product_catalog/pc_proddetails.asp~assort_id~1300~prod_ID~24069

You can find those models around at other places like Best Buy as well. ABC Warehouse though often has some really strong prices so that's why I used them an Amazon for the price quotes above. But those are all solid models.

Sony - stick with V or W series. Those are good mid-range choices that will serve you well in larger sized sets.

Samsung - stick with 650 or 750 series. Those are good mid-range series that will serve you well in larger sizes (The 7 series just adds multimedia features, which if you don't want/need you can save money and stick it out with the 6 series).

LG - stick with the LH40 series. I think that's the best bang for buck series from them. Unless you really need/want more advanced features from the higher series.

Sharp - The 77U series is likely the go to series from them for your needs.

Panasonic - my personal recommendation for larger sized sets; The S and U series offer really good quality TVs for sometimes more "affordable" prices. If you want some of the more advanced image options though look for the G series (look around, with a good sale can sometimes actually be close in price to a S series).

Thank you!

Will the release of oled and 4k drop the price of regular tvs?

Original W

hello, i was wondering if anyone in the tv sales or home theatre communities thought that with the release of oled (organic light emiting diode) or 4k resolution tvs sometime in 2013, that the price of tvs that aren't oled or 4k will drop much like standard definition tvs dropped in price when high def came out? In case your wondering im looking at the price of a Panasonic Viera Tcp50st30. THANK YOU

Answer
Yes the prices will go down, but not all of a sudden. Like all other electronics, the prices are constantly going down. Even when HDTVs came out, the prices on standard television didn't dropped overnight. Also, OLEDs TVs and 4k TVs are still a novelty, with only very pricey model are available to the general public. It will take 2-3 years to become mainstream and to challenge the plasma/lcd/led prices.

This is especially true if you want to buy a very specific model, like your case. If you are willing to wait that model would be when the new models will come out (so the stores need to sell their old stock). This is usually in the February-April time frame.

Ok here is the same motherboard and a phenom 2 940 quad core processor (which is better) combo deal for $335! Thats less than your current cost for motherboard and cpu together. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.181991
Also you are looking at an sli motherboard which is great, but your buying a crossfireX graphics card.......that is just dumb!
Here is a EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Superclocked Edition - $195

This is a great card, and in the future you can purchase another one and run them in sli!
Other than that it looks like your good to go, if your going to overclock your processor I would HIGHLY suggest getting an after market cooler. If not your should be fine with the stock.
Good luck! :)

Do you think it's too early for Nintendo to be revealing their new system at this year's E3?

Ethan the

Nintendo is supposed to reveal their new video game console at this year's E3. It is called, "Project Cafe" at this moment. Sony and Microsoft have stated that they won't release their new consoles until 2014. With this news, do you think Nintendo is revealing their new system too early or do you think this is the right time to reveal this new console?

Personally, I am not sure. I think the earlier this console is released, the more similar it will be to the Wii, which is a bad thing, OR (and probably not because this is Nintendo) the console will be way over-priced. However, releasing this console sometime later this year or next year will have Nintendo "beating-the-curb" against the competition, which is a good thing. Plus, Nintendo designs their systems to be profitable unlike Microsoft and Sony, whom actually loses money for every console that is purchased - they make it up in game sales. That's a plus too. As well, Nintendo does need an upgrade from the Wii - not really the features but the graphics. While the graphics are great, they are nothing compared to the PS3 and the X-Box 360, so I'm glad they are making an upgrade in that retrospect - they probably need it the most in that way. Personally, if the PS3 and the X-Box 360 will be released in 2014, I think Nintendo should wait until 2013 to release their system.

What do you think?
Tech Generation? More like Tech Era!

Answer
I have an Xbox 360 and a Wii and I'm a fan of both. I'm looking forward to this and hope to get it when it comes out.

Considering that the Wii came out in 2006, I think plenty of time has passed. It may well be time for some new consoles. Besides, with Sony and Microsoft now with their own motion controllers, I think Nintendo is the one that has to play catch-up now. When it comes to the Wii, I think people that dislike it do so mostly for three reasons:

1. No HD graphics. People want to get the most out of their gaming experience (and expensive HDTVs).
2. Their online play isn't as good as the other two consoles and they want to test their skills against people far away from them who may at least be on their level.
3. A lot of gamers are looking for more good third-party or mature games like Call of Duty, Starcraft, and Final Fantasy. Games like that tend to be pretty few and far-between on the Wii.

If all of this is going to change with the new console, I think most of them may shut their mouths, if they actually have enough spare cash to buy one, that is. If the 360 and PS3 were as expensive as they were when they first came out with all of the features they had, this new Nintendo console may be up in that price range. Better start saving.

Time Stand

I'm looking to purchase an HDTV and was wondering the difference between the two types. Is it worth is to spend the extra money for LED? How much better is the performance of an LED?

Answer
LED and LCD HDTVs are actually both LCD. The only difference is when the HDTV says it's LED, it's actually referring to the type of backlighting. LEDs use light emitting diodes which turn on and off extremely fast. This helps to make dynamic contrast possible (black scenes are darker, white scenes are brighter). LCDs use fluorescent tubes that are not so fast. Performance wise, picture quality varies greatly between manufacturers in regards to both technology. Before making a purchase, do your homework and read up on specs and reviews on websites like http://www.cnet.com and http://www.specsandreviews.com

What is the best type of (Plasma, LCD, LED) HDTV to replace an old RPTV 52 in television from the 1990s?

Markee Mar

I've had this tv since 1991 and it's has been working fine up until a few months ago. I'm ready to place it with an HDTV. The tv is located the corner of a large family room with it's only light source being two lamps and a ceiling fan.

Answer
Hi

There are so many out there that it's difficult to know which one to buy isn't it? I think you need to try and narrow it down to a couple that meet your needs from the TV.

There's a review of various models but before I mention that it's worth mentioning the Panasonic range. With some televisions, you can get a bad picture view when you look at it from an angle and you'll notice poor picture focus. You won't notice those problems with the Panasonic. You get great, clear pictures no matter where you are when you look at the screen.

Hi Foxy 69......You have a samsung home theater in a box type of set up with just the one hdmi output at the rear of this samsung.....ok....If you connect from your components to just the tv,you will be defeating your intentive purpose of wanting to use the samsung to output the surround sound for you......So, what i suggest you get is a splitter or a switcher box same type of thing and they come in many different formats....So,i suggest you get a box that has two hdmi outputs on it....That way you can run a hdmi lead from one of these hdmi outputs on the splitter box to the rear of your samsung and the other hdmi output on the splitter box to the tv....thus splitting the output signal to two....ok.....You can get these with say two, three, four or ten hdmi inputs for you to connect to if you wanted to,so you pick one that will suit your price range and your application.......After you have connected the tv and the samsung, then you can connect your blu ray player and cable box to the splitter box inputs and make sure you get into the video and audio menu's on all of your component's I.E: (tv,blu ray player and cable box) and set them to "hdmi"....Any of the splitter boxes that have hdmi output's & input's will support two different formats and they are the 1.3 for hd standard&hi-def hd and the 1.4 for the 3d hd compatible components....so,if your component's are in fact 1.3 compatible, then you must pick one that is the 1.3 hdmi compatible as the 1.4 will not work... ok...Using a hdmi cable is a much better quality than optical digital cable....Fact!............................................So you can get one of these splitter boxes from this website........"hdtvsupply.com".......To search for the splitter box on their website....on there main page on the lefthand side you will see a product list....scroll down that list until you find " hdmi products"....Then you can click on either the "hdmi splitter" or the "hdmi switchers" to find ok and some of these do have a remote control.......So if you want cheap 'n nasty made in china,go to amazon.com or ebay...if you want a well built quality american product, then go to this website i have suggested for you...Your choice.....Cheers!

Can you make a regular TV into HDTV just by plugging in a cable or adapter?

I can't decide weather to buy a HD ready TV or just keeping my normal non HD TV and buying a cable which turns it into HD. Do you guys know if you get the same quality from doing the cheap way? (buying the cable)

Answer
A HD set top box is available for purchase which just connects to your regular TV (plasma or LCD), ask around at electronic and electrical stores...
They are available here in Australia for around $500, i'm not sure about the U.S or other countries.
I have one and it is exactly how they describe, i've never seen a better picture or heard better sound and some programs on TV have a 3D image (you can change camera angles).
