How will the DTV transition affect HD service?

high quality indoor hdtv antenna

high quality indoor hdtv antenna image

Tommy F

I currently subscribe to non-HD Suddenlink Communications cable television service. A friend of mine told me that once the DTV transition takes place, all television channels that offer such will be available in high-definition service even though I don't subscribe to HD service. I do have a 1080p HDTV, though. Is this true?

Answer
If you have a HDTV television that supports 1080p then you already have the capability on your television to receive your local channel as well as higher channels in digital format for free. All you need is a good indoor or outdoor antenna hooked up to your television. You don't need a digital converter box because your television has a HDTV tuner built in.

However the majority of local stations channels will only broadcast in 720p resolution and not 1080p. 1080p resolution is only used for blu-ray dvd player and or high definition video gaming through the xbox 360 or playstation 3.

As far as your cable, you can still subscribe through them but of course there will be monthly fees. A lot of cable services now offer many channels in High Definition including movie channels. You get better picture quality and more variety in what you want to see.

How to view local HD channels?

Jay D

I have an HDTV with built in hdtv tuner. I'd like to know how I can watch local HD channels. I have Dish Network but I do not have an HD package or the HD receiver, I only have standard definition channels. Most of the local channels have the HD logo on them but I don't see them in hd. What do I need to watch these channels in high def? Comments appreciated.
I thought maybe I could watch them by getting an HD-capable antenna?

Answer
To receive Over The Air channels, you need a good quality antenna. The antenna you need depends on how strong the signals are at your house.

Visit http://www.antennaweb.org . This site will help you choose the proper antenna for your location and tell you where to aim it. Note that there is no such thing as a HD antenna, that's just marketing hype. Any TV antenna, old or new, will do just fine. Also, if you are more than about 5 miles away from the transmitters, an indoor antenna will probably do a poor job so you wil probably need an outdoor antenna.

Connect the antenna, set your TV for antenna tuning and scan for channels. If you want to continue to use the antenna, connect the Dish Network receiver to one of the A/V inputs on your TV. Then you can switch between antenna and satellite by simply changing inputs on your TV. Over The Air HD will look better than cable or satellite too because it's not as compressed.

If anyone has any info please let me know.

Answer
Looks good to me. Basically a computer monitor with a built in TV. Good for bedrooms, or small apartments. It's a little expensive for something with a contrast ratio of 160000. But, buy it, try it, and if you don't like it, return it.

How much would it cost to repair a Sony TV?

Its a 42in LCD Sony HDTV Model KDF-E42A10. While it was being moved it got a little wet (very little). Now it has lines running across the screen..several about 40-50 lines. Some of the lines go away after it runs for about 30-45 mins. I'm pretty good with electronics but not repairs, I'm thinking about getting it repaired by a professional but I want to know how much it could possibly cost?

Any ballparks are greatly appreciated, thanks.

Answer
Forget trying to get your tv repaired. It will cost more money than just buying a new tv. The labor cost is very high. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on tv along with the pro and con of each technology. Sony quality have dropped and they are not very dependable at all. I purchased a Sony 34" CRT tv, the first HD tv in the marker for $6,400 and it only lasted 2 years. Also purchased 2 Sony DVD players model 7000 and 7700 both over $1,000 each when DVD first came out and they only lasted 2 years. I have a Pioneer Elite DVD player and it is over 6 years old and still running strong same goes for my Panasonic Blu Ray disc player model BD-10 the first generation and it is still running strong and over 300 blu ray disc played on it. I use Panasonic Plasma tv and a projector for my home theater and have had no problems. Hope this will help you out.

Answer
you could get the HD cables for your xbox, but for a 32 inch tv it's not really necessary. You could just flip the switch on the audio/video cables to HD. That's what I do for my 32 inch and everything looks great.

What is the Best Way to Connect a Macbook to PC?

Tim B

I've researched it a little bit and I think I'm going to get a mini DVI to DVI cable and a DVI to HDMI cable. I have a 32 inch Vizio HDTV. I think this would work, my question is, is this the best way? I'm mainly concerned with the picture quality and finer details like text. Will the picture be as clear as it is on my laptop monitor?

Answer
Yes, that is indeed the best way. There is no better way to connect a computer to a display than DVI or HDMI, because it's a digital signal.

HDMI and DVI have identical image quality. Why?

Because HDMI is merely DVI + audio on one cable! The video signal carried by HDMI is in fact single-link DVI.

The only difference between a standard HDMI cable and a DVI-to-HDMI cable is that the DVI-to-HDMI does not carry audio.

I saw a commercial in the middle of the night for a cable (box?) that you can access over 900 channels with. It's $47, a one time payment for the (box?) and no monthly payment for the cable. It said that since the government switched t.v. to digital that its completely legal for them to be doing this. Can anybody tell me what its called?(name of company or what this box is called?) Thanks!

Answer
The ad is for a UHF antenna called Clear-Cast that is supposed to be able to pick up TV channels within 50 miles of your home. Nobody has 900 broadcast stations within 50 miles of his home. The digital switchover has nothing to do with the legality or illegality of selling UHF antennas.

http://stopthecap.com/2012/04/02/clear-cast-hdtv-antenna-subject-of-better-business-bureau-review-ad-confuses-consumers/

1. You get what you pay for (or less in this case, RadioShack sells the same antenna for $25.00).
2. If it sounds too good to be true, it isn't.

When the T.V. industry goes 100% digital next year will that affect people that have cable boxes already?

ccnice1

What recommendations for new TVs under $500 do you have?

Answer
The TV industry is not going 100% digital.

Cable and Satellite are not directly affected. Only Over the air analog TV is being discontinued.
The cable industry has agreed to continue to provide analog versions of the local over the air TV until 2012, or to furnish converter boxes.

Whatever your present cable service, it shouldn't need to change.
However, you can expect some cable operators to start moving some of their analog offerings to digital, and to encourage customers to get digital service.

Over the air TV from an antenna will still be available using a digital to analog converter box. The Government is providing up to two $40 coupons per household;d towards the purchase of two converter boxes which are expected to cost about $70 or less each before coupon.

The coupons can be applied for now.

As far as recommendations for TVs is concerned, I suggest you get the December issue of Consumer Reports from your Library. They review a large number of sets. When it comes to these new digital sets, it may be very attractive to go with the lowest price you can find. The problem is that not only is the performance poorer, but the reliability and support are much poorer. For many of them, once the warranty is over, there's no service available once they fail.

Hi

I heard that some big screen tvs are being equipted with something to make them work right because normal tvs wont work without this in the near future does anyone know what this is called

Answer
My brother-in-law has a Toshiba that has an excellent picture. Flat, HDTV, Plasma.

What is the biggest affordable TV that does not cost that much?

Chicago Bl

What's the biggest flat screen TV that I can use at home? I don't want to pay that much for a new big flat screen TV. Please give me some links from either Coscto or Target or Bestbuy that have good affordable TV's.

Answer
How about an actual budget? Affordable to one person might mean $1,000. It could be $2,000 to someone else, and perhaps $3,000 to another person. The word affordable doesn't really mean anything in this situation frankly.

Don't skimp on quality whatever you do. Be willing to go down a size if it means sticking with a higher end brand or a better quality model/series from a given brand. The mid-range models are usually the best bang for the buck. The entry level ones models, even from the top tier brands, can be attractive price wise, but can sometimes lack important features that really impact video and/or audio quality.

Panasonic, Sony, Sharp, Samsung, LG, and Toshiba are all your friends. I would confine your search and eventual purchase to one of those brands. They are all really strong manufacturers. I would recommend avoiding any other brands.

37" or smaller, you really only need a basic HDTV. A CCFL 720p 60Hz LCD will serve you just fine. Paying for the "advanced" features in those sizes doesn't garner much return on the investment (poor bang for the buck since you don't really notice the difference of having those features very much).

40" - 46" is a grey area. Some people like to start going with advanced options like 1080p (Plasma and LCD), 120Hz/240Hz refresh rates (LCD only), LED backlights (LCD only), or going with Plasma (over any form of LCD). Others feel that you can still get a great HD experience with the basic options. I lean towards going advanced feature set, but know people that have gone basic and absolutely love their HD viewing experience. Best way to sort that out for yourself, go into a store and look with your own eyes. See if it makes a difference for you.

50"+ you want advanced features. At that point I would really highly recommend going with a 1080p Plasma.

Check out Amazon.com for prices. They often have some of the best prices/sales all year round. That can give you a good sense of what you should pay for the TV you want. Also, if you can find a store that will price match them, all the better (if you chose to not buy from them).

Some good, what I consider, large sized, and affordable HDTVs,

Panasonic TC-P50G10 - http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-VIERA-TC-P50G10-50-Inch-Plasma/dp/B001UAEWUS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1262283421&sr=8-1 or the slightly updated G15 - http://www.abcwarehouse.com/product_catalog/pc_proddetails.asp~assort_id~1300~prod_ID~24260

Panasonic TC-P50S1 - http://www.abcwarehouse.com/product_catalog/pc_proddetails.asp~assort_id~1300~prod_ID~26126 - still a great TV, a bit less contrast to the G series, but still a top performer

SHARP AQUOS LC46E77U/UN - http://www.abcwarehouse.com/product_catalog/pc_proddetails.asp~assort_id~1300~prod_ID~24089

SONY KDL52V5100 - http://www.abcwarehouse.com/product_catalog/pc_proddetails.asp~assort_id~1300~prod_ID~26080

Samsung 46B750 - http://www.abcwarehouse.com/product_catalog/pc_proddetails.asp~assort_id~1300~prod_ID~24069

You can find those models around at other places like Best Buy as well. ABC Warehouse though often has some really strong prices so that's why I used them an Amazon for the price quotes above. But those are all solid models.

Sony - stick with V or W series. Those are good mid-range choices that will serve you well in larger sized sets.

Samsung - stick with 650 or 750 series. Those are good mid-range series that will serve you well in larger sizes (The 7 series just adds multimedia features, which if you don't want/need you can save money and stick it out with the 6 series).

LG - stick with the LH40 series. I think that's the best bang for buck series from them. Unless you really need/want more advanced features from the higher series.

Sharp - The 77U series is likely the go to series from them for your needs.

Panasonic - my personal recommendation for larger sized sets; The S and U series offer really good quality TVs for sometimes more "affordable" prices. If you want some of the more advanced image options though look for the G series (look around, with a good sale can sometimes actually be close in price to a S series).

What are artifacts when testing image quality?

postie

Reading many image quality reviews for HDTV's, there is alot of talk about artifacts (poor image quality)

What are artifacts, what do they look like, what do they do, how do they affect image quality?

Are they like big pixel squares, or cloudiness in the image?

What are they?

Answer
An artifact is a general term that refers to anything that was not faithfully reproduced. It covers a lot of ground.

The most noticeable artifacts are those that cause jagged edges or smears but just about any defect due to the encoding and decoding process an / or display anomalies could qualify.

Also you are looking at an sli motherboard which is great, but your buying a crossfireX graphics card.......that is just dumb!
Here is a EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Superclocked Edition - $195

This is a great card, and in the future you can purchase another one and run them in sli!
Other than that it looks like your good to go, if your going to overclock your processor I would HIGHLY suggest getting an after market cooler. If not your should be fine with the stock.
Good luck! :)

after seeing the great graphics of the 360 & PS3, do you think these systems would last for 10 years?

14_ME

the PS4 and new XBOX being 2016 or beyond? i mean the next stop would be the final one since you cant go over photorealism
no, officialy the PS2 was only 6 years, because the PS3 came out in 2006. I dont care how long they make game for a system, some games for the dreamcast and neogeo are still being made after 18 years. i am talking about an official new system

Answer
Someone recently asked if it was really true that the ps4 and xbox720 would be released in 2010. Which is ridiculous. They might start work on a new xbox that soon, but it will take a long time to develop, and they won't likely call it xbox720, either, "720" only relates to snowboarders or skaters.

Both consoles were designed to satisfy the high-end HD market. Only a small percentage of people have HDTV's yet. After February 2009 that percentage will make a jump, but it will still be years before it even reaches the halfway point. Maybe 2013 or so.

Next, the xbox and ps3 are the limit of current home-pc processing technology. Processors reached their current, 2 to 3 ghz limit about 5 years ago, due to heat problems. A recent advance in chip technology will allow faster chips to be made, but it's not even close to being implemented yet. The xbox has 3 fast processors, and the ps3 has a staggering 7. That's about as many processors as you can put into a computer or console, and still have it be cost-effective and have developers making applications for it.

So the bottom line is basically, they CAN'T make the next generation yet. The technology it will have to involve is in its infancy, I doubt it will be implemented in time to save Moore's Law, maybe in big mainframes or servers it will be implemented in 2 or 3 years, but I think it will realistically hit PC's in about 2012 or 2013. Console developers need to see how it works in PC's before putting it in consoles, so giving them a couple years dev time would put the next generation around 2014 to 2016.

Now about that photorealism thing, I disagree, there's a lot more to do to make games more realistic and lifelike.

For one thing, most 3D games use classical rules of perspective, ignoring the way the world actually looks to your eyes. You don't see a rectangle in front of you, and you have much more peripheral vision too. If you turn quickly in a 3D shooter, straight lines often look curved. Devs have been making optical tricks to deal with this for a while, but there is much work to be done.

A couple years back, Sony showed off the first flexible LCD video screen. That's right, you could conceivably have a game system where the screen wraps around in a semicircle around you, or even a "virtual reality" room where the screen surrounds you. Games for such a system will be awesome and will take more than the next generation to handle

How to get a better picture quality on a lcd hdtv?

bbjamie14

I recently bought a 1080p lcd hdtv, right now im watching tv just through basic cable without a cable box or anything else. But when im watching tv i dont feel the picture quality is very good, it looks somewhat blurry and i just dont feel like im getting what im suppose to. I wasnt really expecting that though it being an HD ready tv and putting out 1080p. Would getting an HD cable box from my cable provider help?

Answer
The picture looks bad because you are looking at standard-definition channels, not HD channels.

HDTVs usually make standard-def channels look WORSE, not better!

So what you need to do is get some HD channels.

To do that with cable, you probably have to upgrade your cable account to pay extra for HD and get an HD cable box. But before you do that, you could try without a box, and have your TV scan for new channels (tell it you have digital cable when you start the scan), and it may pick up a few channels (mostly major networks) in HD. If you are happy with just those in HD, you might not need to pay extra for HD.

I have HDMI running from Surround sound to HDTV. I have Digital Optical Cable running from HDTV to Surround sound. How do I direct the TV to use the optical cable for sound instead of HDMI. The main goal is to have best sound quality for HDTV, HD Set-top Cable Box, and surround sound system. Thanks to any answers!

Answer
Run the optical cable from the TV digital audio output to the surround sound digital input.

Select the optical input on the surround sound system (can't tell you exactly how without knowing the make/model), and you'll get great audio from whatever you're watching on TV.

Do those DVD upconverters really work on HD TV's at improving the picture quality?

Mike D

i just got those lord of the rings extended DVD's but they probably wont look like a bluray quality on my HDTV. however i went to walmart and saw they have these cheap $40 dvd upconverters that are supposed to make dvd's look near-HD. but does anyone know just how well these work? would it really improve the picture quality for a HDTV? has anyone here tried this out?

Answer
no. your good quality HDTV has built in capability to convert standard DVD output to match the native resolution of its screen. makers of HDTV sets know that their customers want to watch DVD movies, so they design a very good converter into the set. using an external scan converter may actually reduce the quality of the visual presentation.

Answer
Display models at retail stores do get a lot of usage early in their life, having to run constantly, often with settings such as contrast and color turned way up to make the picture quality look better under the bright lighting of the store. As such, it is possible. Always avoid buying display models if you can. Another possibility is that the TV might not be connected to a 1080p source.

What is the best HDTV at a quality price?

Tim

I would like 40-42'' Tv. I also need a new tv stand to hold my stereo, cABLE BOX, PS3, etc. Any ideas?

Answer
When you are trying to balance quality and price, you're going to find that different TV technologies are better in different environments and for different viewing purposes (TV shows, Blu-Ray, Gaming, etc).

For example, Plasma TV screens are usually made of glass (very reflective) so you wouldn't want to place these in a bright sunny room. On the other hand, Plasma's handle fast motion for sports and video games better than most LCD's and are cheaper at larger screen sizes.

With LCD's, the screen usually has a matte finish so they are more suitable for bright rooms with a lot of direct sunlight coming in, but they come in smaller screen sizes and cost more "per inch". If you are gaming on the X-Box or PS3..there are certain LCD's that are going to handle fast motion gaming better than others.

This is especially important for input lag with games that depend on accurate timing of controller actions such as first person shooters (Call of Duty, Halo, etc), sports and fighting games (Madden, Street Fighter, MLB, etc) and music games (Guitar Hero, Rockband, etc).

Now since you mentioned price...bear in mind that features such as 3D, Internet-connectivity, Social Media Apps (Twitter, Facebook, Netflix, Hulu, etc), will add to the price. You can still spend less than $1000 and get a great 40-42" TV in a Panasonic (VIERA's are great), Sony (Bravia's are excellent), and Samsung (Look for Aquos models with Gaming Mode). LG is nice as well.

If you don't want to do that much in-depth research and want to get the right TV the first time around, you should consider using The HDTV Genie which eliminates the research and guess work in finding the best TV at a quality price for your own specific needs.

I need some advice. I am currently looking at the Panasonic TCP50ST50. I can get it for around $875 given the sales, CC discount, and points I have saved up. But, should I buy this TV now, or wait for the 2013 models to arrive. Here are my needs: I cannot go larger than 50 inch. Picture Quality is the number 1 priority. I have surround sound already set up. The TV will be an a basement that has windows, but still a dark room. I will be using it mostly for HDTV, Blue Ray DVD, and some gaming. I have a Wii U so I already have an ability to stream into my Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and Hulu accounts. So the questions would be: approx how much will the 2013 50 inch models be? Is Panasonic still the best? And will the new features on the 50" models be worth the extra expense?

Answer
You should consider the LED TV, tough the price is higher for that size. I find that the picture quality is better and the newer models are also equipped with a number of features (i.e.3D , direct internet connection, youtube streaming). Wait for the new models to be launched, so that the older models' price will drop. Samsung and Sony are also quite good choices.

no, officialy the PS2 was only 6 years, because the PS3 came out in 2006.

It's getting about time to upgrade. Now I have a finished basement which is a game/media room. The couch will be about 10 feet away from the TV so I'm thinking I can go 60 inches or more, EASY.

Answer
A few years ago, it was the Pioneer Kuro. Now, it is the Sharp Elite series.

Note that this is the ultra high-end. You will get a very good quality from each top brands also:
Sony = HX929
Samsung = D8000
Panasonic = VT30
LG = LW9800 (but the reviews are mixed)

If you want to go really big (> 70"), you have not a lot of other choices than Sharp though. The rest of the manufacturers stops at 65" in 2011.

(And if you want to wait, new 2012 models will be out in about 1-2 months)
[To AVDaddy: No, manufacturers just announced them at CES in January. Most of the models will be out in March-April, but some are only planned to released in fall]

Connecting a MacBook Pro to HDTV, NO Sound?

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro that I'm trying to connect to my LG HDTV via Mini Display Port to HDMI. The picture comes across fine, but the sound does not. I went into settings and under audio I selected my tv connected via HDMI. However, when I go to play music on my laptop, no sound goes through to to the TV. What's up with this?

Recently cancelled cable and cannot get local channels?

best quality hdtv antenna image

Brad

I am an Arizona resident and recently cancelled my Cox cable service. For 3 or 4 months since I cancelled the service I have been using the coaxial cable to get local channels on both my digital televisions (the main tv being an Element and the smaller tv being a Westinghouse). Recently though on both televisions I have lost 2 channels and have done automatic channel searches on both the TVs (as well as other searches) and have not gotten them back (the channels are the CW and Fox). I bought a RCA Amplified indoor off-air HDTV antenna but it only found one or two channels and I made sure to do the channel search through the antenna. So I hooked up the coaxial cables again. Then today on the Element tv I can no longer get NBC or PBS but I can get it on the Westinghouse. I have tried different coaxial cables and as mentioned before the RCA antenna but both of those did not work. Does anybody have any advice? Also, if it helps I live on the bottom floor of an apartment complex.

Answer
It's truly sad how many people are led astray by junky indoor antennas that are supposed to work as well or better than anything else. Several in that category with the RCA brand can't be expected to work much better than a coathanger, if that.

With your given situation, your best hope is a top quality indoor antenna, and that would be the one in the link below. If I had to put out money for an indoor antenna, it's the only one I'd consider. If you can't get a channel with that one, it isn't going to happen with an indoor antenna.

Two side notes: (1), forget your cable wall outlet. You cancelled that subscription, so that resource is gone. And just FYI, (2), there are no "HDTV" antennas. Any time you see that in an ad or on the side of box, it's simply marketing baloney that's intended to make you think it will actually work. Absolute technical nonsense. A TV antenna is a TV antenna, period. They all work the same, whether the incoming signal is HD, SD, analog, or something else.
- - - - -
Followup per the other answer about San Francisco. The S.F. Bay Area is not a typical over-the-air TV market. The area is a major hotspot for OTA, thanks to transmitters high up and very nearby on Mt. Diablo, Mt. San Bruno, and especially Mt. Sutro in the center of S.F. itself. It's one of those places where the coathanger I mentioned would actually work. Or a cheap RCA antenna.

But this fellow isn't in one of the world's hottest reception areas for OTA. He's in Arizona, where reception can assumed to be more typical. And he's in a ground floor apartment. That means the coathanger--or the cheap RCA--isn't a good bet. Not impossible, but we can only go with the provided information. As long as he's spending money on something, $45 for an SS3000 is still a far better bet than $12 for the known poor performer.

What exactly is an HDTV antenna? I heard it can receive HD broadcasts for free without subscription?

George

I have AT&T U-Verse, and we just got a new Sharp 32" HDTV, but we aren't subscribed to the $10 a month for all the HD channels that broadcast in the higher quality HD. But someone mentioned some sort of antenna that can receive that HD quality for free and all you need to do is buy the antenna and hook it up. I'm not sure how it works and it seems too good to be true. Can someone explain?

Answer
If you are old enough you will remember back in the old days when everyone had an antenna and used it to catch all the local stations. Well those days are back. The local stations are now broadcasting digitally and a lot of the programming is in HD. All you need is the right antenna pointed in the right direction to get those stations. Just hook that antenna up to the coax input of your tv and scan for channels. You must understand though that the channels you get are only the local ones, like NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC etc. You cannot get the cable HD channels. Those you need to subscribe to HD cable to get.

Fill out this online form and it will tell you what type of antenna and which way to point it to get your local stations in HD.

How to get the best out of my xbox360 and my new tv?

Hey i just bought a new samsung 32 inch lcd hdtv and i was wondering how to make my xbox 360 gaming experience the best? i would love to play my games with hd quality but what would i have to buy or hook up or do for that to happen?

Answer
you could get the HD cables for your xbox, but for a 32 inch tv it's not really necessary. You could just flip the switch on the audio/video cables to HD. That's what I do for my 32 inch and everything looks great.

I have a Toshiba HDTV and I would like to get a little better sound quality out of it.

Also, how would I hook this up? Do you just plug an optical cable from the soundbar to your TV? Does it use the TV's sound or could I run my WDTV Live box to the soundbar and just shut off the tv speakers completely?

Can the soundbar decode DTS 5.1 audio, or will I have to use something that can be decoded at my box and transmitted as PCM?

I don't need surround sound, just want to have extra speakers to supplement the poor sound quality of the TV.

Its a Toshiba 26LV47
I do not have a certain type of speakers in mind yet.

Answer
Yes but make sure to stick to a 2.1 set at best. More than likely you will need to hook up with a stereo mini to RCAs. But since you did not include any model numbers it can never be sure.

Some TVs do not have analog outputs so provide more detail on what TV exactly you have and the model of speakers you are looking at, with that it can be said what to do to hook them up.

EDIT:
Looks like you will need a receiver to make that happen. The TV does not have a analog audio out so you will need a receiver of some sort to down mix for you. Unless it has a headphone jack but that may look tacky, I could not find information about a headphone jack or not on your TV.

Blu ray players and viewing distance?

best picture quality hdtv 2012
on ... 2012 [Horror Movies] Million Dollar Crocodile (2012) 720p HDTV
best picture quality hdtv 2012 image

Yoda

I've read alot about proper viewing distances for viewing blu ray movies and HDTV. My viewing distance is way outside of the range. I have a 65" RP CRT which is 1080i, and my viewing distance is about 16 feet away. Is buying a blu ray a player a waste of my money or should I invest in a good upconvert dvd player instead.

Answer
Invest in a Blu-ray player as the quality is great. Even on my HDCP 20" 720p monitor the difference between DVD and Blu-ray is huge, you won't notice the bad quality that DVD has until you watch a Blu-ray Disc movie, even the bad discs are good.

The interactivity is also good if you buy a bonus view player as Blu-ray Disc gives PiP, and Hi-def audio, and upscaled DVD isn't anything as good as Blu-ray Discs. Anyway a DVD upscaler can't upscale audio of interactivity.

However do you have a HDMI connection, because over component which is analouge the studios can freely downconvert the signal into DVD quality, due to the Image Constaint Token, or deny to play in the near future (Digital Only Token (DOT)). Some third parties say that they won't use it until 2010 to 2012, but it is not confirmed, and the studios can use it if they wish, anyway since the format war is over, it might be used. Check wheither you have HDMI, as far as I know not many CRT's have HDMI.

16 Feet away is a huge distance but, since you have a large screen it will look a lot better than DVD, but 10 Feet will be ideak for you.

Blu-ray is great, but make sure you have HDMI, as component isn't future proof. Also buy a PS3 as it's cheap and it can do Bonus View and BD LIVE where most players can't, be upgrade only PS3's and PC Drives can be upgraded.

But since you have a HUGE screen Blu-ray will be a good investment, even if you don't have HDMI (as only Warner hasn't really said wheither they will not use it, and 2010-2012 is a long time), and also if you don't have HDMI I don't think upconvert DVD players can upconvert with component, they might be able to with VGA, not sure though.

But....... if you don't won't to spend money on Blu-ray pickup a HD DVD player with HDMI, for a sweet upconverter, and you can take advantage of the clearance of over 300 HD DVD titiles like Harry Potter, Transformers , Poseidon , Shrek, Troy and much more, and build up a massive library in you home. It has to be noted that if you won't buy Blu-ray, HD DVD players are the BEST upconverters, and they are going dead cheap though to the format war, and it is always neglected that HD DVD players can upscale very well, but it will always be second rate compared with Blu-ray, or a native HD source.

In the end it depends with you, but if you are going for Blu-ray buy a PS3 with a HDMI connection, and check wheither you have HDMI, as you won't get upscaled DVD's without it most of the time. Still for the time being Blu-ray can do HD via analouge component up to 1080i (which you have), and VGA can do full HD ( no point for 1080i though).

So have a think about it, in the end it's about your budget, but since you have a large TV Blu-ray should be better than DVD even if it is upscaled, anyway you can't be sure that all DVD upscalers are good, although HD DVD players are good upscalers.

But on an upside Blu-ray has better picture quality, better audio (dependant on players decoders for audio) and more interactivity (dependant on Player Profiles).

Questions about Panasonic GT50 THX Cinema picture mode?

Alex

I purchased a 50" GT50 HDTV a few days ago and I absolutely LOVE it! The picture is amazing. I was playing around with the picture modes though and i noticed one called "THX Cinema". How is this different from the regular "Cinema" mode? When i switch between them all that's obvious is that the picture looks a bit smaller but more complete (like it zooms out a tiny bit). Of course I'm completely ignorant to all this technical stuff so what do I know. Can anyone explain this to me? I the THX mode optimal for movies and such?

Answer
For a given manufacturerâs compliant display, THX [picture] modes are intended to provide a set of simple preset picture settings that conform to THXâs carefully chosen criteria for video image quality. Ideally the preset THX picture settings should provide the most natural or accurate video image quality short of a professional video display âcalibration.â In reality, for the more demanding perfectionist it is relatively easy to surpass the image quality performance offered by the preset THX picture modes on the 2012 Panasonic plasma display panels by using the Custom picture mode along with proper display calibration software and hardware.

In addition:

THX picture modes (according to Panasonic GT50 series eHELP, page 25):

âPrecisely reproduces the original quality of the image without any revision.â

âRecommended for playback of THX disc[s] (disc[s] with âTHXâ logo.) THX mode is used to mirror the picture settings used by professional filmmakers, faithfully reproducing the image quality of THX Certified movies. (THX Certified movies have the âTHXâ logo on a disc.)â

I am getting around 200 in back taxes. and I am trying to decide on what I should spend it on. Theres only one thing I NEED but the other things I WANT.

Things I need:
New tires for my truck - price- 508.19

Things I want:
PS3
3DS
HD TV- Picture on Tv now is going out (Keeps flickering)
HD PVR (To record video of gaming and upload them on youtube.)

I need help deciding. And dont just say tires cause my tires aint bad. They just need replaced sooner than later

Thank in advanced

Answer
Since you have a bad i'd say buy a new TV. There are some cheap ones for around 200-300 dollars. There about 32-37 inches i think. Don't buy a PS3 just yet because the PS4 is coming this Holiday 2013. I'm pretty sure that Sony will drop the price of PS3 if you still want it. On black Friday Sony comes with bundles that much cheaper than now so don't get PS3 now. Considering that HDTVs are really cheap now you can buy that now. For HD PVR you will not need that because most games now have a theater mode where you can save that gameplay, use a usb flash drive to transfer the gameplay to your computer then upload.

surround sound questions?

Lakota C

I have been trying to get my surround sound to work for hours and still nothing, i bought some things that didn't come with a user manual because i bought them from ebay, and i couldn't find the manuals online
I have an hdtv
a 5.1 surround sound receiver
a 5.1 surround sound speaker set up
and an hdmi dvd player
I'm very confused as to how i should connect each device to each other.
My reciever does not have hdmi cable inputs/outputs.
I want the video to come out in hd, how do i hook these things up?
Below are some of the pictures of my receiver and all the plug ins that i have no idea how to set up.

http://i.novobuscar.com/index.aspx?p=%2FPic%2Fbr%2F2012%2F10%2F25%2Faaed5489-3b30-4855-8351-8519dde81f42.jpg

http://pictures1.kyozou.com/pictures/_14/13874/13873028.jpg

Below are pictures of my subwoofer, i need to know how to set this up to my receiver.

http://www.vminnovations.com/sys/resource.ashx?guid=4e8e918a2e674172b7bb33bc4a927257

http://sweetiesreviews.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/vminnovations-review.jpg

My speaker set up came with these cables

http://www.vminnovations.com/sys/resource.ashx?guid=a38527c287164af79f2d2dde25785d28

And lastly do i have to hook the audio from each device (xbox 360, tv, dvd player, etc) to the receiver? or can i hook all devices to the tv and then send the sound to the receiver through the tv?
This is a list of inputs and outputs on my tv
2 x HDMI (19 pin HDMI Type A) - Side,
1 x HDMI (19 pin HDMI Type A) - Rear,
1 x VGA input (15 pin D-Sub (DB-15)) - Side,
1 x Composite video / component video input (RCA phono x 3) - Rear,
1 x Audio line-in (RCA phono x 2) - Rear,
1 x Digital audio output (coaxial) (RCA phono) - Rear,
1 x Headphones (Mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm) - Side,
1 x USB (4 pin USB Type A) - Side

If i do have to plug in audio to the receiver, would i be able to have both the hdmi cable going to the tv while also having audio only cables going to the receiver? or would that not work?

Thank you for reading all of this, and especially thank you if you can help me. I know this is a lot of stuff, but there are so many different ways i could be messing it up that i need to know the exact right way to do it for it to work.and i (obviously) have no idea what i am doing ahah
Sorry for such a long question and i hope someone can help :)
Thank You!!!!

Answer
Only one of your receiver pics works, the 2nd one. It would have helped a LOT more had you simply said what make and model it is, because there are lots of pics on the web.

It looks like your receiver doesn't have HDMI plugs. That's bad. You should get a modern receiver that has HDMI inputs and outputs. Then it's real simple; All hidef sources would go to receiver HDMI inputs, and one HDMI goes from the receiver to the TV. To send TV audio to the receiver, a digital optical cable goes from the TV to the receiver. Your hidef TV has one, very likely, your receiver, apparently, not so.

Speakers connect to the speaker outputs of the receiver, obviously. But, the cables that you show that camwe with your speakers do NOT work with any proper home theater audio receiver, so I bet that your speakers came from a cheapie all-in-one HT system, and isn't usable with proper audio gear. Again, had you mentioned the make and model of the speakers, that would have helped lots.

Looking at the back of the subwoofer, it looks like you're supposed to connect the rest of the speakers to it's rear connections. FR means Front Right, Cen means Center, and so on.

Frankly, it looks like you have a dog's breakfast of wildly incompatible pieces, so I'd bet that they really won't work as a combo. Wrong choices, wrong bits.
