I will play video games 100% or the time on one of these hdtvs. Should I go with a 720p 600hz plasma or a 1080p 120hz Lcd. Both tvs are made by the same company.

Answer
The above post is incorrect. The screen glare problem has not been solved. Plasma screens are the glossy type. When I went to best buy, i noticed severe reflections from all angles. There is even a video done by CNET on the VT30 plasma TV (last years panasonic flagship model and also the TV in my bedroom) on youtube where you can see significant reflections even in a darker room. Plasma TVs are best suited for rooms with controlled lighting. In those conditions the plasma TV will produce great PQ. Also plasma TVs consume the same amount of power as the older plasma models. You can verify this through many review sites such as FlatpanelsHD or CNET. They measure the total watts consumption per hour and have it down on a chart. If you are adamant on purchasing a plasma, then I would recommend the ST50 by Panasonic. It is their most inexpensive plasma TV and it has gotten great reviews.

Now I recommend to you a LED LCD TV for gaming. My reasons are : if you plan on gaming a long time, your TV will not overheat and burn-in issues are non-existent. (i have seen burn-ins on a panasonic vt30 after only 5 months--even with the screen wipe feature in use). Also 3D gaming is a big plus for me so the comfort of the glasses will become significant enough to where it will affect the type of TV you may purchase. You will be able to play during the day. LED LCD TVs are very bright. Most 2012 LED TVs however have a glossy screen as well. You will get some unwanted reflections. I highly recommend LG's LW series 3D LED TVs (2011 models). They have a matte screen for unparalleled brightness and since its 2012 now, should be priced even lower than its competition.

Best 1080p 32"- 40"hdtv? ?

jaime

I been looking for a good 32- 40 inch TV. Has to be 1080p connecting a Xbox 360 to it and maybe a apple TV. Will hang it so which one is the best please put down model number so I can look up unboxings and review. Thank you.

Answer
Samsung and LG are good at producing thin tvs. I like LG more though because of other features on their tv (i.e. they have passive 3d which is flicker free and requires light glasses) and because it's cheaper. In their 2012 models, LM6200 has 32" and 42".

I've been playing the McDonald's monopoly thing and have almost collected all of one color and I want to know if you definitely win that prize.

Answer
Ah, the McDonald's Monopoly game... chasing after that one color stamp to win the big prize. If only it was that simple.

First of all, if you like McDonald's and you are happy about winning a food prize, its ok to play. Here's how it breaks down:•Medium Fries ($1.75) – Odds 1 in 9, or 11.1% chance you win.
• Quarter Pounder w/ Cheese ($3.60) – Odds 1 in 44, or 2.3% chance you win.
• Small McCafe or Smoothie ($2.40) – Odds 1 in 44, or 2.3% chance you win.
• McFlurry ($2.55) – Odds 1 in 44, or 2.3% chance you win.
• Breakfast Sandwich ($2.65) — Odds 1 in 22, or 4.6% chance you win

The other instant prizes (winning a DVD rental from a Red Box) to headphones are tougher. The DVD is 1 in 101 and the odds go up from there.

Now for the challenge - getting the properties. The truth is that whatever property group you need, one space is much, much, much more difficult to get than the others. Take the Red group (Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky) which gives you one of 40 plane tickets - the odds of getting Indiana or Illinois are around 1 in 10. The odds of getting Kentucky Ave., however, is 1 in 15 million.

Here is a list of the odds for all of the properties (plus the toughest one of each set to obtain):
BROWN: Mediterranean Ave, odds 1 in 30 million wins $1,000.
• LIGHT BLUE: Vermont Ave, odds 1 in 40 million, wins $5,000.
• PINK: Virginia Ave, odds 1 in 200 million, wins $10,000
• ORANGE: Tennessee Ave, odds 1 in 602 million, wins Super Bowl tickets.
• RED: Kentucky Ave, odds 1 in 15 million, wins one of 40 plane tickets for two.
• YELLOW: Ventnor Ave, odds 1 in 300 million, wins $20,000
• GREEN: Pennsylvania Ave, odds 1 in 40 million, wins one of 15 Fiat cars.
• BLUE: Boardwalk, 1 in 602 million, wins $1,000,000 in $50,000 annual payments.
• RAILROADS: Short Line railroad, 1 in 150 million, wins a year's supply of gas.

Do you see the challenge? It's not getting two of the three properties, it's getting the extremely scarce third one.

Here, btw, are the odds for winning the non-food prizes:
40 point MyCoke Reward (or medium Coke) - 1 in 151
$5 McDonald's Arch card - 1 in 21,518
EA Sports $10 promo code - 1 in 161
$10 Shell Gift Card - 1 in 60,250
Hasbro Monopoly Board Game - 1 in 60,250
$25 Shell Gift Card - 1 in 86,071
Shutterfly 8x8 PhotoBook - 1 in 302
EA Sports Game - 1 in 35,441
$50 - 1 in 60,250
ur Beats Earphones - 1 in 4,061,000
$100 - 1 in 105,701
Panasonic Lumix TS20 Digital Still camera - 1 in 1,506,202
Beats by Dr. Dre Phil Speaker - 1 in 4,016,601
Headphones - 1 in 301,245,030
Panasonic Viera 50-inch Plasma HDTV - 1 in 10,401,541
$5,000 - 1 in 40,166,041
EA Sports NFL Game Experience - 1 in 10,041,541
Beaches Resorts Vacation - 4,634,539
Ace Hardware $7,500 Home Fix-Up - 1 in 31,710,004
NFL Pro Bowl Experience - 30,124,503
2013 Fiat 500 Hatchback - 1 in 60,249,006
2013 Fiat 500 Cabrio - 1 in 60,249,006
$20,000 - 1 in 200,830,020
$100,000 - 1 in 301,245,030

So the morale of the story is if you want to win Medium Fries, you have a good chance of going away happy; otherwise, don't count on anything else.

The Young and the Restless (often abbreviated as Y&R) is an American television soap opera created by William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell for CBS. The show is set in a fictional Wisconsin town called Genoa City, which is unlike and unrelated to the real life village of the same name, Genoa City, Wisconsin.[1] First broadcast on March 26, 1973, The Young and the Restless was originally broadcast as half-hour episodes, five times a week.[2][3] It expanded to one hour episodes on February 4, 1980.[4] In 2006, the series began airing encore episodes weeknights on SOAPnet.[5] The series is also syndicated internationally.[6]

The Young and the Restless originally focused on two core families: the wealthy Brooks family and the working class Foster family.[2] After a series of recasts and departures, in the early 1980s all the original characters except Jill Foster Abbott were written out. Bell replaced them with the new core families, the Abbotts and the Williams.[2] Over the years, other families such as the Newmans, Winters and the Baldwin-Fishers were introduced.[7][8] Despite these changes, one storyline that has endured through almost the show's entire run is the feud between Jill Foster Abbott and Katherine Chancellor, the longest rivalries on any American soap opera.[9][10]

Since its debut, The Young and the Restless has won seven Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series. It is also currently the highest-rated daytime drama on American television. As of 2008, it has appeared at the top of the weekly Nielsen ratings in that category for more than 1,000 weeks since 1988.[11] The series, along with NBC's Days of our Lives (both are from Sony Pictures Television), has been renewed through 2013 with optional 2014.

Is there a DVD player that converts normal DVDs to HD quality on an HDTV?

Ian M

My mother said she saw a DVD player that you could put a regular DVD into, hook it up to an HDTV, and it would play the DVD with a high-definition quality. Does such a thing exist?

Answer
Search for Up-converting DVD Players.
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6449_7-6859904-1.html
Notice that some up-convert to 1080i an others to 1080p.
1080i is interlaced, used on HDTV transmitting stations.
1080p is progressive, used in Blu-ray disks.
They do a very good job, but the end-result is not as good as those originally recorded at 1080i or 1080p.
By the way, you need HDMI on your TV, if you use Component it will not up-convert to 1080 i or p.

How do you connect a laptop to an HDTV for streaming movies?

Anna E

I have a laptop computer with a VGA connection and my son in law says that I just need to get a VGA to HDMI cable and connect the two, BUT when I get online to order this cable I have come across some reviews indicating that the cable is not enough, that a converter is needed. Do any of you techno minded people know what I need to do. All I am interested in is using my television as my monitor and streaming movies from my laptop.

Answer
You do need a Converter. VGA is analog HDMI is digital. Those cables are for studio equipment that has onboard converters.

You will need 1 VGA cable, 1 HDMI cable, and the active converter box.

Is the 2 Year Protection Plan from Best Buy a ripoff?

Q. Just recently bought a Dynex led hdtv for my girlfriend's birthday. But i heard that dynex tvs aren't reliable and are more prone to breaking. Should I go back to the store and get a 2 year protection plan for it? I don't have enough money to buy a more expensive tv so that's not an option for me.

Answer
All three answers are way off base. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dynex%26%23153%3B+-+55%22+Class+/+LCD+/+1080p+/+120Hz+/+HDTV/1437844.p?id=1218259335717&skuId=1437844 to start. Look at the reviews. Dynex breaks no more or less than Sony, Samsung, Panasonic. I bought this one: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dynex%26%23153%3B+-+46%22+Class+/+1080p+/+60Hz+/+LCD+HDTV/9605116.p;jsessionid=5357B88A1FCCC2EAD7A2A0ACCEE9DDDA.bbolsp-app03-23?id=1218131141989&skuId=9605116 I guess over 200 people each case are what? Idiots? Go ahead and spend the extra money to get a name brand say an extra $500. And? Extended warranty? Oh hell yes. On any brand not just because it's a Dynex. A 32" CRT set was $700-$1200. A 32" LDC $350. Something had to give, quality. If you get 5-7 years, any set, you did good. My 46" has a $1200 Samsung LCD panel. I paid $500 for the set. If the panel breaks am I going to spend $1200? No. Let the extended warranty pay for it. To the other 3 answers, I guess car insurance is a joke too? Protect your investment.

I need a realy good tv for my xbox 360 and i need a tv that cost around 300 and up

Answer
That's a tough question to answer because nearly all of them fit that description. Except for smaller ones (less than 40" diagonally) the vast majority have more than one HDMI Input, are 1080p in resolution and cost more than $300 (I'm assuming U.S. dollars - maybe you meant something else but you didn't specify).
You can't go wrong with a Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, and even Vizio (some would thumbs-down that last, but I know many people who love them). Here's a list of Amazon's 15 best-selling TVs from 2012:

http://hdguru.com/the-15-best-selling-2012-hdtv-models/

For gaming many people say Plasma is the best technology for it's fastest response time (no "lag" in the video), but LEDs have come down in price, provide a brighter picture, will overall last longer (all will usually be obsolete before they fail or get dim) have largely solved the lag problem, and use less energy to operate. But for anyone to pick one for you - well I sure wouldn't try. Go look at as many as you can, read online reviews of any you are considering, and make your decision - it's your eyes and ears... Good luck!

Questions about Panasonic GT50 THX Cinema picture mode?

Alex

I purchased a 50" GT50 HDTV a few days ago and I absolutely LOVE it! The picture is amazing. I was playing around with the picture modes though and i noticed one called "THX Cinema". How is this different from the regular "Cinema" mode? When i switch between them all that's obvious is that the picture looks a bit smaller but more complete (like it zooms out a tiny bit). Of course I'm completely ignorant to all this technical stuff so what do I know. Can anyone explain this to me? I the THX mode optimal for movies and such?

Answer
For a given manufacturer’s compliant display, THX [picture] modes are intended to provide a set of simple preset picture settings that conform to THX’s carefully chosen criteria for video image quality. Ideally the preset THX picture settings should provide the most natural or accurate video image quality short of a professional video display “calibration.” In reality, for the more demanding perfectionist it is relatively easy to surpass the image quality performance offered by the preset THX picture modes on the 2012 Panasonic plasma display panels by using the Custom picture mode along with proper display calibration software and hardware.

In addition:

THX picture modes (according to Panasonic GT50 series eHELP, page 25):

‘Precisely reproduces the original quality of the image without any revision.’

‘Recommended for playback of THX disc[s] (disc[s] with “THX” logo.) THX mode is used to mirror the picture settings used by professional filmmakers, faithfully reproducing the image quality of THX Certified movies. (THX Certified movies have the “THX” logo on a disc.)’

Don't tell me interfacelift.com and such. All the ones on google I pretty much found. I need a site with literally thousands of 16:9 backgrounds. Preferably in 720p and 1080p.

If you can find a GREAT site, with thousands of 720p and 1080p wallpaper, you are amazing!!!!!!!

There are hundreds of high quality ones at InterfaceLift:

why does a 1920x1080 (1080p) wallpaper look bad on a 3D HDTV used as a monitor?

bdawwl

I have done some research and from what i can see a 1080p still frame is about two megapixels in quality. After researching spatial resolution my understanding is that for 1920x1080 to be displayed accurately it would have to be displayed on a 19" x 10" screen? So does that mean my wallpaper looks lame because its having to stretch it to over double the size on a 47" HD screen? now i have tried to use a 3840x2160 wallpaper but it didn't fit the screen. So i resized it in photoshop (but wouldn't this knock the resolution down (i mean quality)? As you can see i'm confused and not very aware of what i'm talking about...in short i guess my question is.... How do i get a wallpaper to look good on a large (47") 3D HDTV being used as a monitor for a computer?

extra info:

I do have a hdtv card that I use to watch tv (looks great from a distance!) when using tv as a monitor viewing distance is about a 70-100cm
SO:

If I was to take a larger image i.e. 3840x2160 and open it in photoshop, then create a new 1080p size image and increase the dpi to say 200 and then free transform the large image to fit the 1920x1080 canvas would that make an image look sharper by cramming more dpi into a smaller canvas? or am i completely off there?

Answer
Its just the size of the monitor is very large.
With a 47" screen the dots per inch will be relatively low.
It will look fine from a distance - but up close the pixels will be quite large.

A high quality print will be anything up to 1200 dots per inch.
1920 pixels would be less than 2 inches at that resolution - so at 47" diagonal that is not going to look very sharp.
Your DPI on your monitor will be relatively low compared to a 1200DPI photo print.
It will even look low compared to a 300DPI print.
There is nothing you can do about this. Its all to do with the available pixels per inch.

EDIT: Just done some maths on a 47" diagonal screen and it turns out that your DPI is around 36DPI.
That's pretty low if you are up close and expecting sharp results.

What should I spend my back taxes on!!?

Q. I am getting around 200 in back taxes. and I am trying to decide on what I should spend it on. Theres only one thing I NEED but the other things I WANT.

Things I need:
New tires for my truck - price- 508.19

Things I want:
PS3
3DS
HD TV- Picture on Tv now is going out (Keeps flickering)
HD PVR (To record video of gaming and upload them on youtube.)

I need help deciding. And dont just say tires cause my tires aint bad. They just need replaced sooner than later

Thank in advanced

Answer
Since you have a bad i'd say buy a new TV. There are some cheap ones for around 200-300 dollars. There about 32-37 inches i think. Don't buy a PS3 just yet because the PS4 is coming this Holiday 2013. I'm pretty sure that Sony will drop the price of PS3 if you still want it. On black Friday Sony comes with bundles that much cheaper than now so don't get PS3 now. Considering that HDTVs are really cheap now you can buy that now. For HD PVR you will not need that because most games now have a theater mode where you can save that gameplay, use a usb flash drive to transfer the gameplay to your computer then upload.

cali_girl

I have an analog TV right now and I wanted to know what a digital box would do.

Answer
A converter box will provide you with your local channels as well as many other high end channels. You will see the difference in picture quality with no static or fuzz. You will need to purchase a compatible HDTV indoor or outdoor antenna to get the best possible reception.

How will the DTV transition affect HD service?

Tommy F

I currently subscribe to non-HD Suddenlink Communications cable television service. A friend of mine told me that once the DTV transition takes place, all television channels that offer such will be available in high-definition service even though I don't subscribe to HD service. I do have a 1080p HDTV, though. Is this true?

Answer
If you have a HDTV television that supports 1080p then you already have the capability on your television to receive your local channel as well as higher channels in digital format for free. All you need is a good indoor or outdoor antenna hooked up to your television. You don't need a digital converter box because your television has a HDTV tuner built in.

However the majority of local stations channels will only broadcast in 720p resolution and not 1080p. 1080p resolution is only used for blu-ray dvd player and or high definition video gaming through the xbox 360 or playstation 3.

As far as your cable, you can still subscribe through them but of course there will be monthly fees. A lot of cable services now offer many channels in High Definition including movie channels. You get better picture quality and more variety in what you want to see.

I'm looking to get a good quality HDTV (I care more about picture than size, but a combination would be better of course)...I just don't know much about TVs. I would mostly use it for movies and playing Xbox 360. Thanks in advance.
Any other suggestions? I'm not sure what all the specs mean, so when I click those, I still don't know which ones are really good. I'd rather get this TV for movies than games...so basically what's the best TV in that price range for movies? Thanks for the help guys.

Telemundo comes in fuzzy, what to do?

high quality indoor hdtv antenna

high quality indoor hdtv antenna image

C

I get Telemundo through my antenna...the picture is decent, though fuzzy. What I can't deal with is the crackling and noise. Is there any way I can clear the picture? It's an analog channel that still comes through my HDTV and antenna. Is there anything I can do to make the picture clearer and eliminate the noise?

Answer
The only solution is pretty much a better antenna, or better aiming and placement of the antenna you have. If it's a roof-mounted antenna, someone should climb up, check the wiring (make sure it's tight, not damaged), and then try turning the antenna to see if the quality of the picture improves when it's pointed another direction.

If you are using an indoor antenna, you should try replacing it, or aiming it better. It may be necessary to position it close to a window.

In the sources below, is a high-quality indoor antenna you can make out of cardboard and foil (don't laugh, it's very good antenna.)

What kind of Antenna for HDTV?

Q. ...just got an hdtv. It picks up some digital channels pixelized with no antenna. I have a few general antennas throughout the house. Will any of these work, or do you need a special HD or Digital antenna?

Answer
HDTV uses the same antennas as normal over the air television. The only difference is with amplified antennas, they generally require a higher quality amplifier as the cheap ones for analog television can distort the digital signal more than it improves it. Some antennas that say they're especially for HDTV may be designed to better reduce multipath interference. Your best bet is a directional outdoor antenna, but if you're getting stations even with no antenna, I'd just try one of those general antennas you already have and see what kind of results you get. The problem I had with indoor antennas was that when people walked around in the house it could make the signal go all pixelated. But like I said, if it's strong enough to where you're getting stuff with no antenna, might not be a problem for you. Start with the simplest/cheapest solution first and work your way up.

Surprising my husband with a tv in our bedroom for his birthday. Looking at the 2011 Toshiba 40E210 for $549. How does it compare to other brands and LCD's on the market? Pros? Cons?

Answer
This toshiba is a great TV.The picture quality on this TV blows away my existing HDTV I've had for a couple of years. Great for the price. But if you compare this to Samsung and Sony, then this TV gets blown away just because the options on the TV are limited. But the picture quality is fantastic, looks better than TVs at twice the price or more. I use it to watch netflix from my ps3, play ps3 games, and watch TV sports. All look great.

Whats the best audio option for me in order to get the best 7.1 hd sound? Hdmi or Fiber optic audio cable...?

joe_mail@s

I have a 2011 receiver and need to know what cable to buy for the best audio in 7.1

Answer
Hi Joe:

Either one will do, since both methods are digital (i.e., no difference in the final quality). [Note @Jordan: Electricity (cables) and light both travel at same speed.]

Since HDMI carries both the video and audio signals over the one "wire", and if that saves you running separate cables to your receiver, then that's probably the most cost-effective route.

But if the receiver you refer to is just your AM/FM/Surround 7.1-decoder/amp for audio from your HDTV, then patching via fiber-optic might be cheaper (especially if you already have fiber patch cords). But, again, if it also switches between DVD/BluRay and other video sources with HDMI and digital sound, then go with HDMI cables to save the extra audio patching.

And just so you know, the RCA "coax" connection for digital audio (usually the orange RCA jack next to the fiber jacks) yields just as good quality as the fiber optic signal. Again, it's all digital! Just use video-quality RCA/coax cable (instead of analog RCA audio patch cords) since digital audio is a higher bandwidth signal.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Just Sold My Old Xbox 360 Should I Buy A New Slim Bundle?

best 3d hdtv 2013
on Best 3D TV 2013 CNET
best 3d hdtv 2013 image

Mocho22

How long should it take for the xbox 360 slim to turn into the old thing of the past. I hear 2013-2016 will release some or all new consoles by major companies. By that time I think video gaming would be majorly expensive for me considering I am a college student and I would like to save for a car or to dorm at college. Should buying a new xbox 360 slim 250GB bundle be in my interest, I mean it seems like a good deal but 300 dollars holy crap that's a ton of dough. I was considering buy a TV but most TV's seem to wanting to release 1080P and 3D technologies in the future so buying a 720P would be stupid. Saving up for something.

Is investing in today's cheaper technologies like xbox 360's, 720P/1080i HDTV's, Ect. worth it. I mean I will probably upgrade in the future.

Also wouldn't it just be best to wait it out, the wii ended out being a weak fad with bad graphics and good exclusives but mostly bad games, the ps3 at launch sold for 600 bucks I remember because I was so jealous of my rich friend when he got one on his B-day, the xbox360 ended up being junk until recently when they added in built in wi-fi and bigger harddrives.

I am started to see what technology does, and I don't like it. They hold out and gives us shit first then, give us more shit to buy. Apple my most hated company is the king of doing this for example.

Hopefully @ E3 which will not be open to the public sadly in June I will find out where the new xbox and ps4 stands. Also what will new consoles do? If It's 3D and we need new Tv's like Expensive 3D HDTV's needed to grab full potential I am going to laugh my ass off. 3D is not so revolutionary and as a guy already wearing glasses, it's not that cool. So maybe buying a xbox slim will be a good investment, also saving my money will be a good one as well. There is a lot of games I haven't played and the xbox 360 slims, old backwards compatibly wii and ps3 seem better than any new console to show it's face.

Answer
That is the entry level 3D TV from the 2012 line up (the LM in the model number is the 2012 designation, LA is the 2013 lineup).

Overall - that series is considered to be a very decent TV. For that particular model...since it is the entry level...you will have somewhat less features than the higher up in the series (LM6200, LM6700, LM7600, LM8600, LM9600)...but overall it's not much different. This particular one does not have the Smart Features of the LM6200 and up...and it also doesn't have as good of processors as the LM7600 and up, but it should be decent enough for normal use.

As far as 3D and glasses are concerned. These TV's use passive 3D...meaning that (and this is in laymans terms) the picture is filtered in a way that when the glasses are put on...the left eye sees one picture and the right eye sees another...and your brain makes it 3D. Without glasses on...it will just look like an extremely out of focus picture.

As far as cons for this unit...there are 2:

1st (and this applies to a LOT of manufacturers and not just LG).
The 120Hz "Tru Motion Rate" is not the same thing as a 120Hz refresh rate. So - though it sort-of performs like a 120Hz TV...it really is a 60Hz panel. You will find this to be the case in most of the lesser expensive models from all manufacturers.

2nd:
Given that this is a left-over 2012 model...you are already starting out with 1 year old technology. Not saying that it's not good technology...but that there is already a newer model and any 2012 models are simply left-overs that didnt sell. You should expect to see a significant savings from the 2013 models. It's hard to price-compare an overstock model...since the major retailers who would normally carry these have already replaced them with 2013 models...so you can;t always rely on a quick google shopping search...as it's likely to come up with few results.

Overall though...$800 for a 55" 3D TV is not bad...so you certainly aren;t getting hosed at that price...but you just have to realize that it's marked down because it is in fact a 1 - 2 year old tv...even though its new.

hello, i was wondering if anyone in the tv sales or home theatre communities thought that with the release of oled (organic light emiting diode) or 4k resolution tvs sometime in 2013, that the price of tvs that aren't oled or 4k will drop much like standard definition tvs dropped in price when high def came out? Answer
Yes the prices will go down, but not all of a sudden. Like all other electronics, the prices are constantly going down. Even when HDTVs came out, the prices on standard television didn't dropped overnight. Also, OLEDs TVs and 4k TVs are still a novelty, with only very pricey model are available to the general public. It will take 2-3 years to become mainstream and to challenge the plasma/lcd/led prices.

This is especially true if you want to buy a very specific model, like your case. If you are willing to wait that model would be when the new models will come out (so the stores need to sell their old stock). This is usually in the February-April time frame.

Does it still worth to buy a PS3 FAT?

Dvid

Lets face it. Its 2013. Still I would like to ask: should I invest? Im planning on buying a cheap first gen PS3, I would renovate it by cleaning it and changing thermal paste, adding a new, large hard drive. I am also planning on buying a cheap HDTV to use with it. I want to buy it becouse I want to play some games that are only available on the PS platform, but also any games I can get my hands on. But the big question: should I invest in buying a first gen PS3 that probably was made in 2006 or 2007? Also is there a noticeable difference between the SLIM and the FAT versions? I need advice, please help.
Please note that I dont want to wait for the PS4 becouse I dont have the money for that thing....

Answer
If you don't plan on getting a ps4 right away then ya get a ps3, but you should get a slim as they're more reliable.

Q. rathers its plasma lcd led or whatever brand will that greatly make a difference in picture quality?? if so how much will it be dramatically different?

Answer
It depends on how hardcore of a gamer you are really. When plasmas first came out they were death for gamers or even frequent sports viewers because of the threat of "burn-in"-when a repetitive image on the screen would remain "burned in" even after the picture would change, think health/ammo bars or the scoreboard in sports. Newer plasmas don't suffer from it to the same degree, but they still can have problems resulting from extended gaming sessions. If you play like 3 hours at a time you will be fine with a plasma. If you are more of an 8 hour marathoner you may want to try a different direction. Once your type is chosen just compare refresh rates (Htz) and contrast ratios in like priced and sized models. Also make sure it has all the inputs you may need. Multiple HDMI inputs, VGA if needed etc. Often you can get a larger screen size with a plasma per dollar.

Plasma vs LED, which is better for watching HDTV especially sports?

charchar88

I will be looking to get a 50-60 inch HDTV sometime next year and was wondering which technology is better for watching sports in HD, and HDTV in general? Plasma seems a lot cheaper and from what I've read has better picture quality but I heard again LED might be better for sports/hdtv. Which is the way to go?

Answer
Plasma...due to it's very wide viewing angles, and fast response time, giving you no blur on fast action.. (no refresh rates needed..) Long life, just like LCD/LED..

My laptop can ONLY support S-video and VGA output. I don't have a great video card, is it necessary or possible to do HDMI? For my know, HDMI is the best way to work it. But, I have no idea whether s-video/VGA can convert to HDMI or not? also like, use adapter? BTW, how about s-video to Component TV, or other form convert signal stuff? My HDTV has all kinds of port. Thanks a lot.

Answer
S-video is very poor quality. The TV's S-video input is limited to about 720x480 resolution. The "480" is a hard limit as it is determined by NTSC standards. You can sometimes set computer display options with S-video output to higher than this, but the video card is going to be resampling, putting the information from more than one line of computer display onto one line of the screen; the result is not pretty. Forget it.

If your TV doesn't have VGA in, then your best bet would be to get a converter from VGA to component. The technical name for this is a "transcoder", but most people just call it a "converter." This is in theory a lossless conversion (it's just simple "arithmetic"). There's one shown here for $124 :

http://www.pacificcable.com/More_Pages/VGA_Component_Converters/VGA-Component-Transcoder.html

Or, for about the same price, here is a converter that goes from VGA (or component) to DVI. You can then get a DVI to HDMI cable (HDMI is the same signal as single-link DVI, just different connectors)
.
http://www.digitalconnection.com/Products/Video/dcp261.ASP

I would rather convert to VGA component, though, as the transcoder is very easy to get right - it's just a few op-amps and the signal stays in the analog domain. The VGA to DVI converter is not so easy to get right: it needs very high speed analog to digital converters. Your TV already has a set of those; why buy another set?

It is btw a myth that HDMI is better than DVI, or component or VGA for that matter, when you are talking about a 1080p TV or even a 1920x1200 computer screen. Re. HDMI vs. DVI, they carry the exact same signals as far as the picture is concerned, the HDMI standard merely defined a new connector and adds HDCP (copy protection) and audio to those same signals... but DVI can carry that stuff too.

And 1920x1200 is easily within analog's reach (RGB or component). I see on that cnet forum page a claim that "you'd still be dealing with VGA quality, which is in the same ballpark as s-video" - this is complete nonsense, and whoever wrote that has no concept of what the S-video signal is. I'm looking at a 1600x1200 screen fed by a laptop's VGA output right now. It looks as good as the screen under it, 1600x1200 DVI. Reality is that component and VGA are the same sort of signal and one can be transcoded to the other with just a few adds and subtracts (i.e. a few dollars worth of op-amps).

Is it really important to have calibration on an LCD television?

Answer
Very, very few consumers need a professional display calibration. With few exceptions many of today’s displays are much improved over those of the past and have at least one display or picture mode that will provide acceptable grayscale performance straight out of the box. Consumers that purchase a good quality, well-designed display will rarely benefit from a professional calibration not to mention that such a service could potentially make your picture fidelity worse if you were unfortunate enough to hire a less than competent calibration service. Furthermore, there are many consumers that simply will not enjoy an accurate, optimized and/or “calibrated” video image while others cannot because their viewing environment is less than optimal (or in some cases because a consumer has color deficient vision.)

Like most consumers your best bet (assuming you own a reasonably well designed, well built LCD TV,) is to purchase or rent one or more of the popular display optimization (aka “calibration”) discs listed below in order to properly optimize your display’s settings. If after attempting to optimize your TV picture you’re still dissatisfied then you may want to contact one of the calibration services I’ve listed below. However, under no circumstance do I recommend that a consumer pay $250 to $400 for a professional display calibration on a television which has an MSRP of roughly less than five times the cost of the calibration.
