I have comcast cable, but only 2 digital adapters. There are 3 regular televisions in the house and 2 hdtvs. Everyone in the house loves to watch cable. I have had people tell me that hdtvs don't need the adapters to recieve all channels. Is this true? If so, how can I get all channels on hdtvs?

Answer
The Comcast DTA (Digital Transport Adapter) is intended for customers who have the "Expanded Basic" channel package and an old analog TV. It allows you to receive the pay-TV channels (like History, Food Network, ESPN, etc.) that they're removed from analog basic cable (no box) to their digital packages that require a box.

Since the output of the DTA is strictly analog, it's not intended for use with HDTVs, although it will work--the picture will simply be standard-def analog. A waste of an HDTV's capability.

You can get your local broadcast stations in analog on Comcast with no box at all--just connect the cable directly to the antenna jack. If your HDTVs have a built-in QAM tuner (check their specs), you'll also receive any unencrypted digital channels that Comcast has on the cable, some of which will probably be in HD. But don't expect much--again, just about all of their cable-only channels have been moved to digital-only.

None of this is permanent, however. After 2012, cable companies are not required to have anything on a "no box" basis. Enjoy it while you can, and save your money for 2013.

What Tv should i buy?

Hi I am looking to buy a new tv, but I am having some problems. I want to buy the panasonic vt60 for the colors, motion, and black levels. The only thing keeping me from buying it is the line bleed, fan noise, and green dithering that show up in the picture where it isn't completely dark. I bought the panasonic gt50 last year and loved it but it had the problems I listed. The green dithering would have been acceptable if it couldn't have been seen from a normal viewing distance while in THX mode. Anyways now i am considering led TVs and was wondering what 2013 led tv can best compete with plasma? Right now I am considering the Sony 900a model. Is there a better 1080p Led tv than the sony?

Answer
The Samsung 8000 series would be a much better tv than the Sony. Pesonally, I have nevver owned a Sony product that have last more than 3 years. Purchased the first DVD players model 7000 and the 7700 both are the price of $1,100 each and the first HDTV 34" CRT and they all did not last more than e years. The new Panasonic ZT series Plasma tv is reviewed by Home Theater Magazine. This is compared to the old Pioneer Elite KURO tv. I would still recommend the Panasonic. I do use 4 Panasonic Plasma tv along with 3 LCD tv and never had one issue. Hope this will help you out.

I have heard that plasma is no good, LED is good (lasts about 15 yrs) and LCD is the best (lasts a lifetime). What are some recommendations on buying a big screen TV, as in things to look for?

Answer
Well, none of those statements are true!

Plasma and LCD last about the same amount of time...depending on brand! There is no way to know for sure how long LED will last since it is a new technology.

When looking for a new HDTV, the first step is to figure out what your budget will be. A key piece of advice here is "You get what you pay for"! Meaning if you go with a TV brand that is considerably cheaper then another, there's a good reason for that! Super cheap brands of TVs are not reliable and generally do not come close to name brand TVs in terms of picture quality!

Top 5 brands in terms of product reliability and overall picture quality:
1. Panasonic
2. Samsung
3. Sony
4. LG
5. Sharp

Other things to consider are LCD or Plasma....Screen size...720p vs 1080p...and so on! Size and resolution(720p vs 1080p) can be determined by knowing what distance from the TV that you sit. Typically the most common size range for the living room is between 42" - 50". Here is a nice chart that will help determine what resolution you actually need based on your seating distance and screen size(pay attention to the green & red lines and/or shaded areas only): http://s3.carltonbale.com/resolution_chart.html

Let me know if you need more help with the chart!

As for the LCD vs Plasma deal, it basically comes down to your preferences and viewing conditions! LCD TVs come in a wider range of sizes and resolutions but are more expensive and not as good with fast motion!

Plasma TVs on the other hand only come in sizes 42" to 65". But are much better at producing sharper images with fast motion content like sports, movies & gaming! They also have deeper blacks and more vivid and rich looking colors!

For more info on LCD and Plasmas, see here: http://www.plasma-lcd-facts.co.uk/

Hope this helps!

Can I take full advantage of HD quality movies on my 22" LCD, or do I need a bigger display?

aanidaani

I'm just wondering if it's worth having an HD player hooked up to my LCD or if I need a bigger screen to fully appreciate HD quality movies. Obviously a bigger screen would be nice, but I just want to know if the difference between normal DVDs and HD DVDs will really be noticeable on a screen of my size. Thanks!

Answer
Our eyes can only resolve HD resolutions at certain distances.

Standard DVD (and tube TV's) are 480p. 720x480 = 345,600 pixels

HD at 720p is 1280x720 = 921,600 pixels

Full HD 1080p is 1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels

There is also more color graduations and contrast over 480p at 720p/1080p resolutions.

I've always read the general rule of thumb for seating distances are as follows:

480p, sit 2 x the screen measurement away to not see the pixels. So on a 32" TV, sit 64" or 5.3 feet away.

720p, sit 1.5 x the screen measurement to not see pixels (but to see the improved resolution). So on a 42" HDTV, sit 63" or 5.25 feet away.

At 1080p, you need to sit only 1 x the screen size to not see pixels AND to see the full HD res. So on a 42' 1080p HDTV, sit 42" away, or only 3.5 feet for your eyes to notice all the resolution.

So, your 22" is a PC monitor at 1680x1050 ? You would probably have the screen only 2 feet away to really observe all the detail.

I bought a Toshiba 19" LCD HDTV for watching movies and playing video games. Most of the games I have are 720p and higher, and on the box of the tv it says that it has that resolution. How do I change from 480p to 720p for better picture quality and overall performance?

Answer
The resolution is set by the video, the TV is just reporting what it is getting. So, if it says 480, then your device is feeding it SD video.

Check your game and make sure it's set to output 720p or 1080i. Also, you will need to connect the game to the TV with something that can support HD like a HDMI or component cables.

I'm thinking about buying a Vizio VX240M 24" LCD HDTV, but I know my moms not going to be up for getting an HD box. Is it even worth buying, will the picture quality look bad with regular satellite service?

Answer
You'll see the Dish digital channels (they're all digital) in very fine standard definition video. It will look great on your proposed purchase; it just won't be HD. But the set will be able to produce HD from other sources, like a DVD player or, if you're lucky enough to be in a strong signal area for over-the-air TV, from an external antenna.

Erik

I want an HDTV around 26 or 27 inches, and i was told that Samsung makes the best quality HDTV. What do you guys think without going over a budget of 700 dollars.?

Answer
Samsung - WRONG! It has a good picture, granted, but it doesn't even come close to the best in reliability. For the best, go Sony! But I don't think you'll be able to meet your budget.

If you can go $749, look at the Panasonic HDTV LCD TC-26LX70 on sale at Circuit City - good price and great LCD. If you have to keep it under $700, go Toshiba for the best and most reliable LCD in that price! Stay away from the "no-names" like Vizio, Olevia, Ilo, Insignia, and Maxent, as well as RCA, Philips/Magnavox, and Polaroid.

Hello, I'm planning on saving up for a Samsung LED HDTV. I'd like it to be 55 inches or more, I don't really care to have smart technology, and I'd love for it to be one of the ultra slim ones. It seems for 55 inches I'll be paying about 1100 dollars, for 60 inches its 1300 dollars, and any more than that, they automatically add the smart technology so its 2,500 or above. But I was just wondering how much a tv's price may drop in about a year from now. I've seen that 55 inch LED's used to be 2200 dollars but now they are 800-1200. How much do these prices usually drop in about a year with the new technology?

This is the tv I plan on buying:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+60%26%2334%3B+Class+-+LED+-+1080p+-+120Hz+-+HDTV/6847446.p?id=1218809261672&skuId=6847446

Answer
It's a tough thing to figure.

A particular model that you like may have a limited shelf-life. Manufacturers tend to make new models in order to keep prices up. Though the price of model 55-123LED (making this model number up) may be $1500 right now...conventional wisdom means that this model should be cheaper next year. The problem is that the manufacturer stops making this model and replaces it with the 55-321LED. Though it is completely identical to the old one...it is a 2013 model and therefore will still be worth the $1500 as a 'current' model.

The best time to purchase last years model is just before/just after the new ones hit the shelves. Stores will cut prices to make room for the new ones. If you wait to long though...you will find last years models hard to find.

A couple of tips for you:
A Good sale can happen anytime. It doesn't have to be Black Friday, Columbus Day, etc. Keep an eye on weekly ads from the major retailers in your area...as well as the online shops. With Price-Matching (which most major retailers offer)...anyone's sale could be a sale for your local store.

Don;t be afraid to ask for a discount. You have to believe that EVERYTHING is negotiable. You don;t have to be rude about it...just a simple "Is there any other way to save money on this TV?" I got 5% off my TV at Fry's Electronics simply by calling the manager over and asking if they're was any way he could save a few bucks (told him I was just a bit short on covering the full cost + taxes). Salesman/managers may know of coupons, etc that can save a few bucks.

what LED hdtv should I buy to avoid noticing any Lag whatsover?

Joe

Hi I have 2 Vizio HDTV. One is an LED and it is a 120 HZ and it is a 47 inch and the other is an LCD 47 inch one and also 120 hz. Now I am gonna give you a great example. You know for anyone who watches NBC Sunday Night Football and they go to the replay and the NBC Logo comes up to show the replay and after they show the replay the NBC Logs comes up again to go back to Live TV, well this is a great example because I notice somewhat of a lag when that happens and I see like a ghosting effect I guess and I also notice the pixels when that happens. It happens on other channels too but I notice it more on NBC Sunday Night Football. I have HD Directv with HDMI cable. So that isn't the problem. It is crazy because the other night I also watched the game on NFL Game Rewind app on the IPAD MINI and I didn't notice any lag whatsoever during the game. Is this lag or ghosting or whatever you want to call it caused by the response time of the TV or is it caused by the Refresh rate of the TV. I mean both of my Vizio TV's are doing the same thing and I even have a 3rd Sony 60 hz tv and it does it on that as well. So my questions are as follows:

1)Is the Lag caused by the Response Time or the Refresh Rate or what exactly?

2)Why is it on the IPAD Mini I didn't notice the lag?

3)I want the images to be crisp without any lag or ghosting or anything like that. What specifications on the TV should I look for?

4)For a 2013 say tv between a 30 to 39 inch what exact tv model do I look at to not see any lag etc?

5)How about a 40 to 50 inch TV which model should I look at?

6)Do I buy instead a monitor that is like 27 inch or 32 inch with an hdmi with a response time of say 1 ms. Please let me know.

Please answer each of my above 6 questions in details. Thanks.
For the Panasonic Plasma I should get a 1080P right rather than a 720P. The only problem that I have with Plasmas is that the picture is way too dim compared to the LED or LCD TV and I like a picture that is very bright. Please help. Thanks.

Answer
It's just a lag based on the distance of the TV and box from the satellite and just the broadcast in general. One of my family members had the same issue they have a 20 inch LED tv in their bedroom and a 32 inch LED tv in there living room. You can hear the TV's echo each other when on the same channel. Next the reason you didn't notice any lag on the iPad Mini is because it wasn't a live stream of it, it was a replay of what happened. So it's not looking for the live feed of the game over the internet, it's downloading it to the iPad's temporary memory just so it can play it through. This really isn't the TV at all VIZIO TV's are great options. This goes back to just DirecTV's ability to get the live video to the satellites and then to TV's across the US mainly. The only option would be to get a 240 Hz or 480 Hz HDTV but I really don't recommend that because those are mainly LCD TV's and LCD is probably the last option you want for a TV. LED is the best quality for a TV and LCD is better for a computer screen image. Overall for TV screen sizes you asked. The Best options are Samsung with there Smart HDTV's, Sharp's new IGZO display HDTV's, then Samsung is always reliable choice for HDTV's

I only own a regular Xbox, and am planning to buy a new console.

My question is this: Am I too late in buying gaming console? Should I wait until something else comes out? WILL something come out in the near future?
Anyone have any information or opinions?

Answer
Nobody knows what the next generation will look like or when it will be released. Anyone who says they know is a big fat LIAR cause they haven't even been designed.

In fact, the technology doesn't even exist yet to make them. Look at the number of cores in xbox360 and ps3: 3 and 8. Each on a 3.2ghz clock cycle. The last couple years have seen the death of Moore's law, which predicted the number of transistors on an IC would double every 18 months. They can't do it anymore because there's a heat barrier, so they had to resort to making multiple cores and pretending it was one "chip." It is hard to make software for and generates even more total heat than it would if they had just stuck with single core without making it any faster. But they can't do that, because the industry expects Moore-compliant products.

Look at any pc on the market today, are there any cpu's clocked faster than 4 ghz yet? No, and they don't even sell them that fast, you have to overclock them. Every new pc is at least a dual nowadays, up to 4 and it looks like they'll be going 8 soon. About to finally catch up with the ps3 except their multithreading still isn't as advanced as the Cell's is, or as good for running 3d game engines either.

So what will they make a ps4 out of? A new Cell with 16 cores? Don't bet on developers lining up to make games for that. It would also overheat like crazy. Circuit width tech is down to 45nm now, but it took three years, since the original ps3's on 90nm. That's not a very fast increase, it would never make a 16-core console realistic. Likewise if Microsoft wanted to take xbox to the next level they'd have to release some kind of 8-core goliath, it would make the red ring of death look like an ice cream social at the south pole. The tech is not there; there is no design. Not even a concept.

Now, the Wii can and probably will upgrade, but that's not gonna make it the first of the next generation. It will make it the last of the current generation, just as Wii is the last of the last generation. The only next gen part of Wii is the controller, and that is an accessory. The console is a 700mhz single-core putz. It is no more powerful than your original xbox. It can't output HD, it has no web browser, it is limited in a zillion ways. If they redesign it to have a dual-core at the standard 2 to 3ghz, then it will outperform the old wii by leaps and bounds. But it will only be a current-gen console. I don't expect them to upgrade the cpu though, only the graphics chip to make it HD capable. Because Nintendo has long feared the US digital transition when suddenly zillions of people will have new HDTV's and realize standard def really kind of sucks.

The console that will last the longest is the ps3, because it has the most advanced cpu and also the best gpu of the bunch. (400gflops compared to 240gflops for xbox's gpu). They're wasting their time on motion sensing right now, which the ps3 has done since it was released and also with the playstation eye, and xbox knows it can't make a better console yet either so it's trying to get your grandmother to play too. Motion sensing control is a joke.

There will not be any real current gen consoles released before the year 2013. Only portables.

If you collect all three stamps at McDonalds for their monopoly contest, do you automatically win that prize?

Zack and B

I've been playing the McDonald's monopoly thing and have almost collected all of one color and I want to know if you definitely win that prize.

Answer
Ah, the McDonald's Monopoly game... chasing after that one color stamp to win the big prize. If only it was that simple.

First of all, if you like McDonald's and you are happy about winning a food prize, its ok to play. Here's how it breaks down:â¢Medium Fries ($1.75) â Odds 1 in 9, or 11.1% chance you win.
⢠Quarter Pounder w/ Cheese ($3.60) â Odds 1 in 44, or 2.3% chance you win.
⢠Small McCafe or Smoothie ($2.40) â Odds 1 in 44, or 2.3% chance you win.
⢠McFlurry ($2.55) â Odds 1 in 44, or 2.3% chance you win.
⢠Breakfast Sandwich ($2.65) â Odds 1 in 22, or 4.6% chance you win

The other instant prizes (winning a DVD rental from a Red Box) to headphones are tougher. The DVD is 1 in 101 and the odds go up from there.

Now for the challenge - getting the properties. The truth is that whatever property group you need, one space is much, much, much more difficult to get than the others. Take the Red group (Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky) which gives you one of 40 plane tickets - the odds of getting Indiana or Illinois are around 1 in 10. The odds of getting Kentucky Ave., however, is 1 in 15 million.

Here is a list of the odds for all of the properties (plus the toughest one of each set to obtain):
BROWN: Mediterranean Ave, odds 1 in 30 million wins $1,000.
⢠LIGHT BLUE: Vermont Ave, odds 1 in 40 million, wins $5,000.
⢠PINK: Virginia Ave, odds 1 in 200 million, wins $10,000
⢠ORANGE: Tennessee Ave, odds 1 in 602 million, wins Super Bowl tickets.
⢠RED: Kentucky Ave, odds 1 in 15 million, wins one of 40 plane tickets for two.
⢠YELLOW: Ventnor Ave, odds 1 in 300 million, wins $20,000
⢠GREEN: Pennsylvania Ave, odds 1 in 40 million, wins one of 15 Fiat cars.
⢠BLUE: Boardwalk, 1 in 602 million, wins $1,000,000 in $50,000 annual payments.
⢠RAILROADS: Short Line railroad, 1 in 150 million, wins a year's supply of gas.

Do you see the challenge? It's not getting two of the three properties, it's getting the extremely scarce third one.

Here, btw, are the odds for winning the non-food prizes:
40 point MyCoke Reward (or medium Coke) - 1 in 151
$5 McDonald's Arch card - 1 in 21,518
EA Sports $10 promo code - 1 in 161
$10 Shell Gift Card - 1 in 60,250
Hasbro Monopoly Board Game - 1 in 60,250
$25 Shell Gift Card - 1 in 86,071
Shutterfly 8x8 PhotoBook - 1 in 302
EA Sports Game - 1 in 35,441
$50 - 1 in 60,250
ur Beats Earphones - 1 in 4,061,000
$100 - 1 in 105,701
Panasonic Lumix TS20 Digital Still camera - 1 in 1,506,202
Beats by Dr. Dre Phil Speaker - 1 in 4,016,601
Headphones - 1 in 301,245,030
Panasonic Viera 50-inch Plasma HDTV - 1 in 10,401,541
$5,000 - 1 in 40,166,041
EA Sports NFL Game Experience - 1 in 10,041,541
Beaches Resorts Vacation - 4,634,539
Ace Hardware $7,500 Home Fix-Up - 1 in 31,710,004
NFL Pro Bowl Experience - 30,124,503
2013 Fiat 500 Hatchback - 1 in 60,249,006
2013 Fiat 500 Cabrio - 1 in 60,249,006
$20,000 - 1 in 200,830,020
$100,000 - 1 in 301,245,030

So the morale of the story is if you want to win Medium Fries, you have a good chance of going away happy; otherwise, don't count on anything else.

CoolBreeze

I have a Vizio 42" HDTV with built-in apps (Netflix, hulu etc.). Moving in to a new apartment with a decent sized living room and I'm looking for a home theater system with good sound quality and home theater experience. Preferably something that includes a DVD/blu-ray player.

I have no experience in purchasing home entertainment units. So, I'd greatly appreciate your recommendations.

Answer
Well you don't say what your budget is and I have the feeling that you want to buy one of those all in one or "HTIB" systems (Home Theater In a Box) from a brand like Coby, Sony Panasonic, RCA, etc,. I can't in good conscience recommend one of those. The quality of the individual components is always poor, they cut a lot of corners and the main unit that plays DVDs and whatnot also serves as the receiver, or amplifier. When one part malfunctions (and they do quite frequently if you look at some of the questions on here about using the speakers than come with those things with standard receivers) you are stuck with a bunch of other stuff that you can't use with anything else. My best advice is to look over AV Home Theater Receivers. They serve as a main unit into which you plug everything, Speakers, TV DVD player, CD payer etc,. When set up right they will automatically switch both the video and audio signals - meaning that the TV picture will match whatever sound it is playing. Marantz, Onkyo, Pioneer, Denon and Yamaha make excellent AV receivers. You can go to their web sites and find lists of all their AV receivers such as this:
http://www.us.onkyo.com/prod_class.cfm?class=Receiver
Onkyo, and others, also have "package deals" with individual components such as this:
http://www.us.onkyo.com/prod_class.cfm?class=Systems
As you have no experience purchasing electronic audio / video equipment you will probably want to go with something like that. You will also probably want to go to the web sites of the other manufacturers I mentioned and see what they offer along those lines. But as I said, I'd try to stay away from anything that has a DVD player built into the main unit. Buy one separately.

Will I get a picture on an HDTV without HD service?

Answer
Yea, you can still use the analog chanels, but the quality just wont be as great. It probably picks up digital chanels, though, which are x.1 or x.2 (x=channel)

The image quality of an analog tv can sometimes be poor.

Is Denmark the first country to mandate the change from analog TV to digital transition? I mean, before US mandated the change.

Answer
Not really. For example, on a large screen LCD HDTV, an analog signal won't look as good as it does on a smaller screen analog TV. On the other hand, an over-the-air digital channel in the U.S., received via a set top converter on an old analog TV, can look a lot better than the former analog signal from the same channel.

If you're unsure about a set or monitor and can't figure it out from the user's guide, search the make and model in Google. A hit on several different sites, Amazon in particular, will give you the set's specs.

I just bought a samsung hdtv and i can't get it to have a very good image quality and i do have dish network (i don't have HD programing) what can I do to make it look better? and will the DTV change next year will Provide better image quality for my tv?

Answer
Your HDTV will display the best video image with a true HD input. On Dish, that means springing for an HD receiver or DVR with an HD channel package. You may also need a new LNB installation. You should get pretty good standard-def (SD) reception with your SD receiver, though.

As for the change next year, that only affects those using an over-the-air (OTA) antenna for TV reception. If you have an OTA antenna, your set should pull in excellent HD programming for free right now from the digital transmitters that are already on the air, providing that you're in a location with good OTA reception.

Answer
Sub $100? Not until Christmas 2012.

And then in 2013, we'll hear about the next new format which will pretty much be the end of Blu-ray. Buh-bye!

Upscaling players are cheap, and quite honestly, unless you have a 40" or larger HDTV that does 1080p, this will be quite adequate for your needs. I have one of the players from Oppo Digital (http://oppodigital.com) Their players handle just about any format you can imagine, are region free (yay), and consistently score high with even the pickiest Home Theater Enthusiasts.

Now, if you're interested in video games, you may want to consider a PS3 which plays games, upscales DVDs and plays blu-ray discs, all at 1080p. At $400, it's one of the cheapest blu-ray players out there, and still considered one of the best for the money.

Are these Samsung HDTV's exactly the same?

I notice the Samsung UA40F5000 has the exact same specs & features as the Samsung UN40F5000, & Im just wondering if TV's that are the same, have different model codes from each other?

The Samsung UA40F5000 is european: http://www.google.co.nz/url?q=http://www.priceme.co.nz/Samsung-UA40F5000-40in/p-887791437.aspx&sa=U&ei=hZguUsitI-rtiAeEq4CgDg&ved=0CCoQFjAC&sig2=OlcSZhgjsl7NgbBedxZR-g&usg=AFQjCNEHuPLmjOa5NzubBtsmsyiqwU0vBQ

& the Samsung UN40F5000 is american: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN40F5000-40-Inch-1080p-60Hz/dp/B00BCGRXI8

Answer
Yes they're essentially the same TV.

Samsung's TV models basically mean (where - size - year - model)

Therefore in UA40F5000 vs. UN40F5000 everything (size, shape, year, model, etc.) are the same, they're just made/sold elsewhere.

- UN/UA = Place
- 40 = 40"
- F - 2013 Model
- 5000 - Series/Model Number

Before Oct. 2nd, 2013, I received several HD and SD channels by connecting my cable. I have comcast internet but no tv service.

Today, all I get is the music channels above 90.

I was under the impression that over-the-air channels are available for free, is this not the case?

Did the digital TV tuner stop working?

Is this part of the FCC/Government shutdown?

Answer
You have a fundamental misunderstanding. "Over-the-air" means you receive it with an antenna, from the TV station's transmitting antenna in your area. Yes, that is free, but you only get it with an antenna, not from your cable outlet.

In the U.S..at least, there is nothing free on cable service--it's all provided by private companies, and they have to get paid via customer subscriptions.

What you were seeing on the cable was Comcast's "no-box" channels, receivable without one of their set top boxes. Those were all standard-def analog plus some HD channels. You saw those HD channels because your TV has an optional QAM tuner.

You had continuity on the cable to your home as an Internet subscriber, which got you those no-box channels as a bonus, so they weren't free. You can't see them now because Comcast and all cable companies are rapidly migrating their analog channels to their digital packages that require some type of box. When it's done, as it apparently was in your area on October 2nd, there are no TV channels left on the cable that are receivable without a box. It was done in my area over a year ago.

So, if you want TV from Comcast, you'll have to upgrade your subscription and get a box.

what LED hdtv should I buy to avoid noticing any Lag whatsover?

How can I connect my laptop to my flat screen?

best hdtv for 2013 image

The tv is a Samsung 2013 model and the laptop is about three years old.

The tv has these outlets: red white yellow cable group, HDMI and USB.

The laptop has USB, and VGA input.

I'd like to use my laptop to stream movies on my tv. Can this be done? With a cable? With a wireless device? Please help, I need to know desperately and no one knows that I've talked to. I am positive that these are the only inputs on these devices.

Answer
You have a new TV that has HD, which is why it has the HDMI adapter, that allows new laptops with HDMI output to connect and watch videos on their laptops on the HDTV.

Being 3 years old, I don't think your laptop has and HDMI port, but you can check. If it has that's the better choice and get a HDMI cable to fit that. Search Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_n_1?rh=n%3A202505011%2Ck%3Ahdmi+cable&keywords=hdmi+cable&ie=UTF8&qid=1375781096&rnid=2941120011

If you can't find the HDMI port, it probably doesn't have one.

If that's the case try this: http://www.labnol.org/software/tutorials/how-to-connect-laptop-computer-tv-screen-lcd-hdtv/2331/

Will an HDMI cable have any effect on picture quality with a PS3 connected to a 720p TV?

sha

I have a Vizio 32" LCD HDTV that displays in 720p, as well as a PS3. If I hook it up with an HDMI cable instead of the Red-White-Yellow cord, will it have any effect on the picture quality?

Answer
Compared to red-white-yellow, yes. Red-white-yellow (actually just Yellow) is just Composite, which does only 480i

Compared to Component ( red-green-blue-red-white), not for gaming anyways. Both it and HDMI do 720p or better.

Reading many image quality reviews for HDTV's, there is alot of talk about artifacts (poor image quality)

What are artifacts, what do they look like, what do they do, how do they affect image quality?

Are they like big pixel squares, or cloudiness in the image?

What are they?

Answer
An artifact is a general term that refers to anything that was not faithfully reproduced. It covers a lot of ground.

The most noticeable artifacts are those that cause jagged edges or smears but just about any defect due to the encoding and decoding process an / or display anomalies could qualify.

How do I change audio setting on Samsung LCD to direct sound through Digital Optical cable to surround sound?

Matt

I have HDMI running from Surround sound to HDTV. I have Digital Optical Cable running from HDTV to Surround sound. How do I direct the TV to use the optical cable for sound instead of HDMI. The main goal is to have best sound quality for HDTV, HD Set-top Cable Box, and surround sound system. Thanks to any answers!

Answer
Run the optical cable from the TV digital audio output to the surround sound digital input.

Select the optical input on the surround sound system (can't tell you exactly how without knowing the make/model), and you'll get great audio from whatever you're watching on TV.

I have vintage Jensen 8 inch, three way floorstanding speakers and a polk audio psw 505, im planning to add a second psw505

I honestly have a horrible receiver, and i NEED to upgrade.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41H3HzVJuWL.jpg <-- This image shows a picture of it

It's a terrible awia, and i know my speakers arn't really high end at all, but would changing receivers change the sound quality by a lot?
and if i were to by a sony 7.2 receiver instead of an onkyo receiver, would i see a change in sound quality between the two?
(im comparing the Onkyo TX-NR616 and the Sony STR-DH740

This sound setup is on my computer, so i am just using optical audio from my computer to the receiver.
i am getting surround speakers soon too, that's why i want 7.2
I might also use HDMI to transfer sound instead of using an optical audio cable

Answer
The receiver is only part of the total sound you are going to get. Onkyo is one of the top brand for receiver from the entry level to the high end. Pioneer is the other receiver. I would reccommend you go to your nearest electronic store and see if they can set up the receiver with the polk audio speakers. Bring your own source of material for the demo. Listen to only one song on each speaker and let your own ears be the final judge. Personally I have never had any Sony product that have lasted me more than 3 years. This was the high end of Sony product, DVD player when they first came out model 7000 and the the 7700 both at $1,100 each and then the first HDTV 34" CRT for a price of $6.400. I have used Onkyo and Pioneer Elite receivers for well over 35 years and never had one issue. Hope this will help you out.

What's the best way to connect an external hard disc to a brand new HD television?

asdfasdf d

I want maximum picture and sound quality.

These are the outputs on the disc: USB, coaxial, Ext.IR, HDTV and AV.

Note that they're all just "little holes" about the size of the plug you plug your earphones in your ipod except for of course the USB.

Also, can USB carry a 1080i resolution to your television (given that your television has DivX reading capabilities) ?

Answer
You can not connect any hard dis drive to a tv. The tv is not a computer. USB connection from Ipod can be connected to the tv along with computer video from the computer.

If i did purchase a HDTV with 1080p and if it was LCD and i had an HDMI cable, would that improve the games graphics?

Answer
LED television with 3D capabilities with a gold plated HDMI cable is the best combination on the market. Even now they are starting to use optic cables, but the gold tipped HDMI will give you the best signal. Make sure the TV size fits your room. The bigger is not the better. If you sit 6 feet from your TV, a 42" is optimal. Any shorter and you might have to go with a 35 or 32. Any more than that, and you are going to have to go with 47" or more.

Stay away from rear projected televisions like the Mitsubishi as well.
Good brands to look at are:
Samsung
LG
SONY

Even getting a nice pair of gaming headsets would be good for sound as well.

Best of luck to you,

Samsung receiver has 1 HDMI output. HDTV has 4 HDMI inputs. How do I connect Blu Ray, and cable box?

Foxy69

How do I connect all these components to get surround sound from TV, and Blu Ray, and show Hi-Def picture quality from cable box. Do I need a switcher? The receiver is lacking HDMI inputs, so it cannot serve as a switcher. Should I input HDMI from the cable box, Blu-Ray and receiver into HDTV, but connect to receiver using component wiring?

Answer
Hi Foxy 69......You have a samsung home theater in a box type of set up with just the one hdmi output at the rear of this samsung.....ok....If you connect from your components to just the tv,you will be defeating your intentive purpose of wanting to use the samsung to output the surround sound for you......So, what i suggest you get is a splitter or a switcher box same type of thing and they come in many different formats....So,i suggest you get a box that has two hdmi outputs on it....That way you can run a hdmi lead from one of these hdmi outputs on the splitter box to the rear of your samsung and the other hdmi output on the splitter box to the tv....thus splitting the output signal to two....ok.....You can get these with say two, three, four or ten hdmi inputs for you to connect to if you wanted to,so you pick one that will suit your price range and your application.......After you have connected the tv and the samsung, then you can connect your blu ray player and cable box to the splitter box inputs and make sure you get into the video and audio menu's on all of your component's I.E: (tv,blu ray player and cable box) and set them to "hdmi"....Any of the splitter boxes that have hdmi output's & input's will support two different formats and they are the 1.3 for hd standard&hi-def hd and the 1.4 for the 3d hd compatible components....so,if your component's are in fact 1.3 compatible, then you must pick one that is the 1.3 hdmi compatible as the 1.4 will not work... ok...Using a hdmi cable is a much better quality than optical digital cable....Fact!............................................So you can get one of these splitter boxes from this website........"hdtvsupply.com".......To search for the splitter box on their website....on there main page on the lefthand side you will see a product list....scroll down that list until you find " hdmi products"....Then you can click on either the "hdmi splitter" or the "hdmi switchers" to find ok and some of these do have a remote control.......So if you want cheap 'n nasty made in china,go to amazon.com or ebay...if you want a well built quality american product, then go to this website i have suggested for you...Your choice.....Cheers!

Can I use a digital tv converter box with basic cable?

Erika

I know this question has been asked a million times but my situation is slightly different, I think.
Well, I have an HDTV from 2013 and an old HD compatible TV monitor thing from 2004 or so. Basically, I get about 100 channels from the Basic Cable package that I have from Time Warner Cable on my HDTV and on the older TV, I get about 20 of those clear channels and the rest are either gone or all blurry. I think its something wrong with the older TV's tuner, or the lack thereof.
Anyway, I bought a digital TV converter box that has a QAM tuner and some other stuff, it also has an HDMI output which I like. I am wondering, can I use this converter box somehow with my basic cable? The basic cable is just my coax cable connected to the wall and to my TV. Can I somehow use the converter box in between these two to get me the missing channels? Or what do I need to purchase to do that? Thank you.

Answer
No, digital converter boxes are only for antenna signals. Cable box signals are different, which is why TV's have the option to switch between Cable/Antenna input via the coax.
One option you CAN do however...

Use the video output of the cable box and put it into the AV1 input, and then just put the digital converter box on the coax part so you can get channels from there. You still have to switch between the 2 sets of inputs though.

If your Time Warner is giving you blurry channels call your cable company, it may be a problem on their end.

How much do hdtv prices drop over a years time?

Tyler

My priorities are :
full hd led tv (1920x1080p)
Decent motion clarity index
sharp and good quality pictures ofcourse.....
smart tv (optional)
stylish with a slim frame

went to a local store he inclined me towards lg32ls series i.e lg 32ls4600 and 32ls5700
Panasonic TH-L32E5D0
sony bravia 32 ex550

i personally like lg 32ls5700
which one should i consider.....
any other options.....

any help will be appreciated :)

Answer
Hi christina, LG WRman Sherlock here,

First of all, my recommendation would be too mention your budget range to get the best opinions possible. Now looking at the factors you have listed, the 32LS5700 would be a good choice.

However, if you have a flexible budget then I would suggest you to look at the 32LM6200 as well. The TV is a full HD LED TV with theater-like passive 3D and easy to use Smart TV functions. It has a Motion Clarity index of 400 which will be perfect for fast moving visuals. And the sleek design with the ribbon stand is definitely the cherry on top. Check this link for detailed information for this TV.
