Do PC games look the same through a 1080p HDTV as they do through an LCD monitor?

Q. Will the picture be of the same quality on a 1080p HDTV as it is through an LCD monitor of the same resolution?
I have ran games through my 720p HDTV, and they graphics looked poor compared to my monitor.

A. we just brought a 52'' 1080p lcd for the superbowl and i hook my 360 up to it after runing it on my 22'' acer lcd and my home theatre projector and on some games like gta iv it looks better on my 22'' and 1680x1050 resloution for some reasion on the 52'' i can see the lines that make up the graphics in the game its not a big deal from far back but it just might be because the tv is massive and can see better detail but on madden this 52'' looks amazing

Does a digital cable picture look bad on a lcd 1080p hdtv?
Q. A co-worker is selling their 40" lcd 1080p hdtv to get a bigger tv. I want to buy it but I only have cable because its included in my rent. But I don't watch a lot of tv (except for some sports); I want an hdtv mainly for gaming and movies. I'm worried that cable will look so bad I won't be able to watch any sports, etc. on tv.

A. It's not too bad. I have a 1080 and it is still very watchable for sports and everything else on regular cable. When you get the T.V. I would mess around with the settings and fine tune it to what looks best to you so you get the best picture possible. Regular 480i (cable tv) doesn't look much different on an LCD than it does on a tube TV.. But if you have a cable company that supports High Definition cable and has high definition cable boxes, it might be worth investing in if you decide you want to watch a little more television. Sports are broadcast in HD with a lot of cable companies now and it's awesome to watch. Something to think about... Good luck and enjoy it if you get it :)

besides the picture quality, can my old dvd player work with the new 1080p HDTV?
Q. i am getting a new 1080p hdtv but don't feel like spending another few hundred bux for a upconverting dvd, for now.
can the old dvd player work with hdtv? do i need to buy any connect wire?

A. Absolutely! Use the best connection you can so you get the best possible picture. If your DVD player has an HDMI port, use that. Otherwise use the component cables (red, gree, blue for video + red and white for audio). If not that, try S-Video. And lastly, if not that, use the yellow, red and white component cables.

How can I convert a TV antenna signal into something my DVR can read?

Q. I want to be able to record OTA HDTV on my DVR (AT&T u-verse), but just plugging my antenna's coaxial into the DVR doesn't work. How can I convert the antenna signal (UHF/VHF?) into something readable by the DVR? Is it possible? I know Tivo can do it, but I want to keep my current DVR.

A. Your DVR needs to have an ATSC Tuner. Check if they have a special antenna Input.
If not, you need a set-top box or a converter box with an ATSC Tuner and output compatible with whatever your set-top accepts.

Curious though, U-verse offers 4 programs simultaneously, why do you need to use it to record off-the-air?

What is the best (and cheapest) way to build my own computer to be an HDTV DVR for my home theater?
Q. I want to be able to record as much over the air HDTV programming on a computer to use as my DVR. Most of the TV shows I watch are on network TV and I don't want to pay the extra bucks to upgrade my satellito to HD programming. Converting to HD programming via Satellite or Cable is too costly when I all the shows I like are free in the first place.

A. You can build a 2005 Media Center Edition Computer. Graphics Card and CPU don't need to be the best. A Pentium 4 3.0GHz with hyperthreading is enough power. An ATI 9800Pro graphics card is big enough. You don't need to spend alot on these to watch HDTV. You buy the software (OEM) 2005 Windows Media Center Edition. You would also need a tv tuner card, ATI 550 Theatrix Pro and the HDTV tuner, ATI HDTV Wonder. Western Digital makes large harddrives 320GB to 500GB. You might also want to buy an Audio/Video Receiver with optical inputs for sound.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EN6GP6/ref=pd_cp_e_title/002-0560632-4144067

You can record all HDTV programing with an electronic TV guide such as the Titan TV Media Center program.

What is the cheapest way to dave DirectTV,any type of DSL or High speed internet ?
Q. I have all including a home phone which I do not use.All I want is DirectTV and the internet, TV's do have HDTV and a DVR also.
Qwest is my provider right now.
I dont use the home phone at all!Do I need it?

A. I have qwest, directv, and DSL too. I just had my land line switched to tmobile@home, though. If you do that, just make sure you call qwest so they don't turn off your DSL too (and Direct if those are bundled). I didn't call and lost my dsl for a week. They can be so stupid!

What is the difference of HDTV antenna and a DTV antenna?

Q. Which is clearer HDTV antennas or DTV antennas? i have a 1080i flat screen. and want clear tv without cable.

Is there a difference, which is clearer, and which supports HD channels and normal channels both? do they output in 1080i, 720i, or 420p?

A. >What is the difference of HDTV antenna and a DTV antenna?

There isn't any difference. They are just meaningless marketing buzzwords. In North America, even 30 year old TV antennas are "HDTV", "DTV", "Digital", or whatever marketing BS is printed on the box.

These terms are useless in choosing a TV antenna.

>supports HD channels and normal channels both?

They all support both.

>do they output in 1080i, 720i, or 420p?

They all output whatever the TV stations broadcast. The antenna has nothing to do with digital resolution.

What antenna is best for you depends on where you are located. The details of your local TV transmitters, location relative to them, and even the construction of your house is what is important in choosing a TV antenna.

How to use the digital antennas?
Q. We just got one of those digital antennas and a converter box from a friend, but now we have no instructions...how do we program or whatever the antenna to get the best signal? Any help would be great! It's a radioshack indoor HDTV antenna.

A. Connect the antenna to the box
Connect the box to the TV. Set the TV to ch 3 or 4 or the video input (depends what you use)
Turn on everything
Go to the menu of the box and do a Channel scan.
Rotate the antenna until you get the best signal.
www.antennaweb.org can provide more help in orienting the antenna.

How to get my digital hdtv to work w/o cable?
Q. I just bought a sharp hdtv digital tv for my bedroom . My bedroom has no cable and Im not planning on getting cable because that is just a extra bill. How can I get the tv to work since no more "rabbit ears" will be use? The converter box is for tvs that are not digital so what do i do? btw I have cable in my living room.

A. I really have no idea what you mean by "How can I get the tv to work since no more "rabbit ears" will be use? The converter box is for tvs that are not digital so what do i do?"

You do not need a converter box because you just bought a new TV with a digital tuner. If you are close enough (maybe 35 miles will not hills in between) to some over the air broadcast stations, you certainly can use rabbit ears, regular or amplified if you are concerned your signal may be weak. The only other option (since you do not want a cable or satellite bill) is a more powerful outdoors antenna.

If you want a more accurate antenna estimate or if you just want to find out how far you are from some station, you can use this tool.

In your experience, what is the best brand of HDTV to invest in?
Q. I'm a brand spankin' newbie to the HD scene, so I was wondering if anybody could clue me in a bit. I'm going to invest in a 32" screen but I was wondering if brand-wise anyone has recommendations.

A. Panasonic and Samsung are the most reliable tv in the market today. Those bargain price tv you see at retail store are not very reliable. If you read all the yahoo questions regarding tv probelms you will notice that 95% of those are the bargain price tvs. Keep in mind you get what you pay for. Hope this will help you out.

How do I get my built-in freeview to work on my samsung hdtv?

Q. I have a Samsung LE40A656, and I cannot, for the life of me, work out how to get the DTV to work. It may just be the case that the wiring is wrong. When I scan for channels it finds 70 channels but 0 services and then says something along the lines of "check your ariel cable" (which I have). So if anyone who owns a Samsung HDTV with Freeview built-in, would be willing to give advice, I would be more than grateful.

A. 70 channels but ZERO services ??

Man....sounds like you need a SPECIAL CARD to unlock those services doesn't it ?

Check with your salesman first. He might know about it.
If not, call Samsung and they will walk you thru the procedure.

As far as I can see, and from what you told me

YOU PROBABLY have it set for CABLE and NOT AIR reception !

Consult your manual....about autoprogramming your TV.

So has blu ray basically won the format war?
Q. With Warner's annoucement on Friday- Blu ray will have 70% of the market. What will happen to HD DVD? Will it turn into what Beta is now- something only creepy old guys who never leave their apartment use?

A. I don't like the idea of Blu-ray "winning" (the misleading advertizing and arrogance associated with Blu-ray turned me off relative to the relative integrity of the HD DVD campaign) but it is in the interest of (almost) everyone that there be one format for HD disks.

I suspect that other studios will fairly quickly drop HD DVD and convert to Blu-ray if not already doing so.

The issues in my view are not whether Blu-ray will be "THE" HD disk format (it clearly will) -- but what will happen with prices, what comes after Blu-ray and will any of it replace DVD (or simply coexist.

It has been assumed that Blu-ray manufacturers have been losing a bundle on promoting Blu-ray. Will they raise prices on hardware? Drop incentive programs like free disks with new players? Raise prices on disks?

As consumers we have a lot to thank the HD DVD camp for in terms of low costs ... but without competition recouping losses may be a temptation.

Also where to from here. Have you noted that Sony HDTVs are building in xvYCC colour space and 10 bit colour support ... while initially it will probably be video games that utilize this extra capability a replacement for Blu-ray (or extension of the standard) isn't far away (8 bit colour and BT709 colour space are standard for Blu-ray). This may be a "simple" extension of Blu-ray technology, but you can be sure Sony have plans to take advantage of the capability they are building into their hardware (assuming content is produced to support it).

Finally, only 38% of US households are predicted to have HDTVs by the end of 2008. And only a fraction of these will allow the benefits fo Blu-ray to be realized (most are 720p models well under 40", and many don't have HDMI connectivity). A majority of even those with HDTVs are expected to resist the premium prices for HD disks. so the likelihood of Blu-ray disks replacing DVD before HD download and VOD services are a viable mainstream alternative to HD disks, or video holographic disks (or other technology) arrives, appears unlikely. In other words Blu-ray is likley to remain a niche format with DVD as the primary disk media for a long time to come.

Does the brand of hdmi cable really really matter,is it all hype?
Q. I just purchased a 42 in. LG plasma and now I have to make the quality better. The monster cables are about 70 bucks on amazon with free shipping but I just read somwhere that newegg has hdmi cables for 30 bucks with shipping. Some reviews for the monster cable say that there is too much hype about them.

Does the brand matter? I know that there is a dfference in the way it is made for durability but does this mean that the cheaper version would get damaged within a year or something?

Also, after I get this cable will I need to have a specific cable box? I already have a digital cable box. And before I get HDMI which I know is the cable to provide the highest quality, is there another way I can get high quality with cables I may already have?

Thanks!

A. Yes, there is another way.. component cables, and yes, you must upgrade your cable box for hdtv. Digital alone does not cut it.
I was concerned with this myself and read many reviews that all say Monster cables are a overpriced rip-off. That the lower priced cables are just fine. It turned out I didn't have choice as when I upgraded my Optimum cable box for hdtv it doesn't even have an hdmi output. When I complained to Optimum they said hdmi wasn't necessary. Without any choice I used the component cables (supplied by Optimum) and have a beautiful picture. I have no way of knowing if it would be better with hdmi but I am certainly not at all disappointed with the picture quality the way it is. I have a Sony Bravia KDL-40S2010 tv. Not sure why you think you have to "make the quality better, but I suggest you try it first with component cables and then, if you are not satisfied, get the lower priced hdmi cables through the Internet.
Please note that you must exchange your cable box for an hdtv capable cable box. Could this explain your problem regarding making the quality better?
Hope this helps!

What type of coaxial cable should I have running from my room wall to my Com cast basic HD box?

Q. I have a Com cast basic HD set top box(don't know what they call it that) and I have an Insignia advanced serious 32 inch 1080 p LCD HDTV,120HZ(model number ns-l32x-10a)

and I also have an HDMI cord running from the back of the box into HDMI 3 on my TV.
Right now the cable from my old digital box is connected to my TV and to the wall

A. RG-6 coaxial cable should work fine. If you want, you can try a higher-quality RG-11 coaxial cable (such as Monster), but the price is significantly higher and probably won't yield any better results, unless you have a lot of fluorescent lights around your house or something else causing lots of RF interference. Most important thing to do is to make sure that the connectors are screwed on tightly to both the wall outlet and the cable box.

why watching DVD movie on HDTV not full screen?
Q. I have Samsung 46" HDTV 120hz. Every time I'm watching DVD movies, the picture 16:9 is so small (not full screen) When I zoom it, some of titles are cut. Please help.
I figured out by changing the setup on my panasonic upscalling dvd player. The viewing not full screen but good size of 16:9 widescreen.

A. First of all you must setup the DVD output format, this is done when no disc is in the player and using the menu buttons to navigate through the pages of menus.
Secondly you must realize that Hollywood doesn't make movies in 16x9 formats. They actually use many different size ratios dependent upon what feel they are going for. The TV manufacturers decided upon 16x9 because movies rarely ever go above this ratio for the vertical height. So TV broadcasters and made for tv movies will usually fill your screen if in HD, normally your movies will have a black bar on the top and bottom. The size of these bars are dependent upon the movie. Also make sure you are watching widescreen versions of the movie.

Whats the best hdmi cable to use for cable box to tv?
Q. I just bought a new hdtv, 120hz Mitsubishi and my cable picture isnt that good, i had cable company repair cable and im receiving perfect signal to my cable box but my picture still not that good, is there a particular brand or style of hdmi cable i need?

A. Since you have a cable box and it has an hdmi slot/cable then im sure it is hddct.I would think either the settings on the tv are way off or your cable box is not set to output hd or your not on the hd channels.I work for mediacom and just like comcast we have just a section for hd in the 702-793 channel set.All other ch are still sd.I have dish network and have the option for only hd to be shown.Depending on the cable box you can try to hit the cable button on remote then power then menu and you can go from there and check settings.I can guarantee that signal is not the issue as with digital/hd low signal will pixilate or no pic at all.

What kind of HDTV is the best for gaming?

Q. I am curious as to what kind of HDTV (Plasma, LCD, DLP) is the best for gaming. Of the TV's I've played on, most of them have a noticeable response time (time from button press to action happening on screen). This really limits how well an FPS can be played.

To this point i've stuck with playing my 360 on my computer monitor, but really want to get an HDTV. Are there any TV's out there that have great response times?

A. CRT's probably are the fastest in terms of response time, but they lack true High Definition which most gamers like. From my use of all 3 technologies, LCD, Plasma and DLP, the fastest response times still come from a Plasma television. The newer LCD's are catching up, but Plasma still beats them IMHO. If you want, you can check out some review articles on Plasma vs. LCD at the website I refer to below. I have bought a Plasma based on their reviews myself.

What kinds of HDTVs are compatible with a desktop computer?
Q. I am window shopping for new TVs and was just wondering if I could just use a $200 29 inch HDTV for a computer instead of an $80 LCD monitor. I use the Internet more than my television and would prefer watching TV shows through Hulu, Netflix, etc. I would not mind getting both but I am just trying to save money for the long run. What would you suggest?

A. Nearly all modern HDTVs can support being a PC display. The ones that are native 1080p are best.

If your computer is VGA only, you need to make sure your choice of TV has a VGA in, otherwise you need to upgrade graphics to a DVi/HDMI capable adapter, or get a VGA to HDMI converter box.
If it has DVI, you can use a DVI to HDMI, on a TV with HDMI, but no VGA.

Do you need an HDTV cable service in addition to a HDTV to get things in high-definition?
Q. I mean.. For example.

I go out an buy an HDTV. Could I just plug my cable wire in, set it up etc, and watch TV stations that are in HD(sports on FOX, ESPN, etc.) -- or do I need to get some kind of HDTV package or box from my cable company?

A. It's possible, depending on your cable company's system.

I know on mine, Comcast, the HD channels are in the 700 - 800 block of channels, and you need a cable box to get there.

Again, depending on your cable company, you may need to pay extra, or not. Comcast used to charge an extra $5 a month for HD, but apparently don't any longer because it's not on my bill and my sister in law just got an HDTV and her cable box provided the HD channels to her just fine without any additional set up.

You can always hook up your TV to an external antenna and pull free HDTV from the thin air. Of course, that depends on where you live too.

What specific computer would be best for running CS4?

Q. I dont want to build my own and want to stay around the $1000 price range. I have a monitor. I've read some forms and was just hoping some would recommend a specific brand and model that they use or know would work well with the software.

A. Here are some recommended:

Processor--->
AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE 3.4GHz : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103692

It can be overclocked to 4GHz easily. It beats Intel Core i7 920 2.6GHz which costs almost double. If you think I'm lying then you can check up the internet: http://www.trustedreviews.com/cpu-memory/review/2009/08/25/AMD-Phenom-II-X4-965-Black-Edition/p4

Motherboard---->
ASUS M4A79XTD EVO : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131402
Best motherboard around, excellent for overclocking, and supports crossfire(if you need to add another graphics card after 4-5 years)

or

GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128392
Similarly excellent, but does not have crossfire. So only one graphics card on this. This is much better option to buy, as I dont think you would need two cards now. When you would require more gaming performance after 4-5 years then add a new card.

Computer Case----> with power supply and fans
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811156098

RAM---->
4GB DDR3 1600 of any brand. I recommend OCZ or Corsair. 4Gb is enough for every game, after 2-3 years you can add in another 4GB.

Hard Drive---->
Western Digital Caviar 500GB : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136073

Mouse and Keyboard---->
Logitech EasyCall Wireless Keyboard, Mouse, Speakerphone & Stereo Headset Kit
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823126010

Monitor---->
SAMSUNG ToC T220HD Rose Black 22" 5ms HDMI Widescreen HDTV Monitor Built in TV Tuner & Dolby Digital Surround Speakers, Resolution: 1680 x 1050
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001278

Graphics Card--->
Most important stuff for gaming.
For your monitor and resolution, its recommended to go for ATi 5770 1Gb GDDR5
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150447
This graphics card will run every game in the world in MAXXED settings on your computer, and its DX11 card, so new DX11 games like DiRT 2, STALKER, Crysis 2, etc.. will look beautiful on DX11 and give better performance. NVIDIA does not have DX11 cards yet. This machine will thrash any game for 4-5 years without any problems.

As you have a monitor, so you might exclude the one I have mentioned. If your monitor resolution is not more than 1920x1200, then the graphics card I have mentioned is perfect. This would be much less than $1000 but will run every game in the world in maxxed settings.

If you still have doubts, or any more questions, or you need a more budget gaming computer, then you can surely contact me at akash1988@gmail.com
I'm always free to help my fellow yahoo members, I have been helping many others on my email.

BEst of LUck! Happy gaming.

how good of a tv does Insignia make? How about Westinghouse?
Q. I know Insignia is made by LG who is a leading manufacturer of HDTV's. I don't know much about Westinghouse. I've been researching these brands and they seem to be the "value" brands but I don't know if it's worth the couple hundred bucks you save to get the best "deal" if its just going to lead to problems later.

A. I have heard some pretty negative things about Westinghouse TV's.

However I hear that Vizio is a good budget brand. Link is to some yahoo rankings of Vizio TV's

What form of blu ray player should i get?

Q. I just bought a 55" HDTV 1080p 120HZ LED tv and now want blu ray. I have it next to my desktop tower. If I get an internal blu ray drive player in my desktop tower and my monitor comes with a HDMI port which i can connect to the tv will the quality of picture be different? Or would a regular blu ray player be better?

A. You can go either way (assuming your computer is capable of handling blu-ray ... check the requirements ... the graphic card must be fast enough, for example). However if you go with the built in computer drive note you can't expect to "connect (the monitor) to the TV". Why? The TV and the monitor are display devices. The blu-ray player is a source device. You can only connect a display to a source.

A stand alone player will offer other capability beside just playing Blu-ray disks (e.g. Picassa, Netflix or other services, USB playback of Jpeg and video, decoding of HD audio from the Blu-ray disk. On the other hand, a computer drive allows you to (potentially ... you have to buy capable software as well as the drive) rip Blu-ray disks to the computer for conversion or use as in media centre mode. Which fits your needs better depends on your needs.

I think you will find by the time you pay for the drive and software (and maybe to get a faster graphics card or upgrade the computer RAM) a stand alone player may look pretty good. Note that even basic players handle Blu-ray essentially identically to premium players (the extra $$ primarily buys better build quality, extra features and better DVD performance).

-30 FT CAT5 CAT5E Network LAN Ethernet Internet wt Cable

Is there something like a cable for HD channels or 3D channels that I should get?
And if I have a standard cable with standard channels, would I be able to view stuff in HD, 3D?
Thanks

A. Yes, you will need 2 HDMI cables, assuming your TV has 2 or more HDMI inputs. You'll at least need one for the BlueRay, the game console could get away with composite cable connections.

You'll also need somewhere to connect the other end of that 30' Ethernet cable. If you have a router, hub, switch or CAT5 jack in the room you'll be OK, otherwise you'll need to decide how to connect the Xbox.

What are some good settings for my hdtv (for gaming, blu-ray movies, football, regular cable tv, etc)?
Q. I have just bought a 42" 1080p hdtv w/120hz refresh and was looking for some good settings for it. The pre-set settings are decent but was just wondering if anyone can explain all the settings to me like contrast, color, brightness, tint, sharpness. and maybe suggest some good setups for hdmi gaming, blu-ray movies, sports, regular tv watching etc.

please and thanks~

A. You can watch it in 1080p HD quality for free here:

What is the point of having an HDTV if it really isnt HD?

Q. Im upset over the fact that only HD channels look good on an HDTV, and the rest of the channels, which is 90percent of everything else that you pay for comes out on your screen in a bad stretched distorted image, unless you change the aspect ratio to 4:3 which makes the screen significantly smaller and your tv is no longer the size you bought it for.. Really why would they make this kind of tv if regular tv looks crappy on it....Unless of course there might be a way to have a full screen image without the stretchy distorted image. I dont even care if it isnt the sharpest image...but at least the picture doesnt make things look short and fat......Im upgrading to HD service from Dish NET with monter HDMI cable to see what happens....Anybody else have this problem/complaint about there expance Crap Definintion TV?

A. Wait....

It'll get better....

You big crybaby....

You don't have FIOS TV....at least not yet.

And WHEN you do...your Low DEF channels will be so clean and clear, you'll wonder why you didn't go FIOS sooner....

So wait, you big crybaby.....

Oh, almost forgot to mention...You DON'T NEED a Monster HDMI cable...Let the DISH-guy install his own HDMI cable....

My Verizon FIOS installer gave me a choice of HDMI or Component Cabling and they gave me a BELKIN cable...the standard for Video engineers for decades....

Monster will break your HDMI connectors.....and the HDMI signal is DIGITAL not Analog, so why buy a cable designed for ANALOG signal when all you're transmitting thru that cable is simple digital pulses?? Costs less too...

Belkin actually fared better in the bandwidth tests over Monster...
But the Monster cleaner Kit is worth the $20....even comes with the Microfiber cleaning cloth....

How do you clean a LCD television?
Q. We just purchased a Sony Bravia 40 inch LCD HDTV and I am unsure of how to clean the screen.

A. Go to RADIO SHACK, PURCHASE THE $20 Monster Screen Cleaner Kit.....PROTECTS THE PLASTIC, grabs dust with it's grabby little microfiber cloth.....What else do you want or need to use on a $700 Display that can be DAMAGED BY WINDEX, or any other cleaner......ever seen brittle plastic due to what's in our air?

That's why I chose to use this stuff for my Customer's TV sets....

How do I clean the screen of an HDTV?
Q. I have a VIZIO 32' inch T.V. and it's dirty with dust and something else.
I'm not sure if you can use windex or not but I need help because if I don't clean it soon it's going to get worse. I appreciate you help and god bless you all.

A. God Bless you to man!.
don't use oxypower anything, or alcohol, cause it can peel the 'performance film' off the screen, just use a basic screen cleaning kit from office depot and you should be fine.

you cant use a rag, you must use a cloth-cause you could scratch the screen, and THAT is not good.

What can I do with the poor reception on my new Vizio HDTV?

Q. Just bought a VIZIO HDTV and only get 3 channels with the antenna, compared to 8 on the old tube TV, using the same antenna. Anything I can do to improve reception?

A. First, there are no "digital" antennas. All TV antennas work the same, whether you bought it yesterday or 50 years ago. Any claim that an antenna is "digital" or "HD" is pure marketing nonsense.

Now, the difference between your two TVs is the transition from analog to digital transmission. You got 8 channels on the old tube TV with the same antenna because that was during the analog days, and you could get by nicely with marginally weak signals. A weak analog signal was maybe a little snowy, but still quite watchable.

Not so with digital. A digital signal is either there or it isn't, and it requires a stronger signal to make the grade than was the case with analog.

So your solution is a better antenna, or possibly an overhaul of your old one. If you have a full size antenna above the roof that's been there many years, you could do wonders by bringing it down, cleaning and weatherproofing the connections, and replacing the downlead with a fresh run of RG-6 cable. There are other improvements you could make at the same time, like perhaps adding a rotor, but those are the principal ones.

If instead you're using an indoor antenna, that's a vastly different story. The short version: indoor antennas are notoriously poor performers with digital TV for the reason explained above. Your goal should be to replace it with a full size one above the roof or at least in the attic if possible, Failing that, replacing a junky rabbit ears with a top-of-the-line indoor antenna, like in the first link below, may help you get a few additional channels.

If you're in the U.S., the 2nd link will help you immensely in finding out what channels you should be able tor receive at your location and what type antenna is recommended. Enter your local info, then use the color-coded tabs.

Use the 3rd link if you're in Canada.

What should I be looking for when purchasing an hdtv?
Q. We are looking at buying our first HDTV for Christmas this year. What is the difference between plasma and LCD? 720 vs 1080? Also, what additional accessories are required (cables, etc). Do I need to have it installed professionally or can I do it myself? Thanks!

A. 1. Plasma vs. LCD: see the link below.

2. 720 vs 1080: 1080 indicates finer resolution, very desirable on screen sizes of 37 inches and up.

3. Nothing extra required. Connect a signal source (antenna, cable, or satellite), plug it in, and follow the directions.

4. You can do it. For large sets, get a helper to help lift it. My 46 inch Samsung LCD set is only about 50 pounds but very bulky.

What do I need to get to get my HDTV to display Comcast Basic cable?
Q. Just purchased a 50" Samsung HL-S5086W. DVDs and most of my XBOX games look fabulous, and SOME channels look a little better than my regular TV, was told there is some sort of $5 part I can get to enjoy the 1080i without going to Digital Cable.
Just talked with Comcast and they told me $16 a month for the set top box.

A. You need a HD programming service from comcast. They will give you a new HD box. I believe its a $5.00 more for the rental of that HD box as compared to normal digital box. There are about 19 true HD channels offered by Comcast to date.
Go exchange the existing digital box with the HD box from your local comcast office. Else they will charge your for sending someone to install. All connection cables are provided with the HD box. Just follow the isntructions. I have it. Nice to have HD with 5.1 audio ! Looks and sounds awesome.

P.S. If you have been a customer for 6 or more months you can opt for $9.95 HD box with HD DVR. This way you can also record HD programming ! They charge a deposit for this if you are a relatively new customer.
Tip: get a $100.00 service rebate if you sign up for HD programming from retail stores like Circuit city or Radioshack. You get $100.00 off on your comcast bill after about 6-8 weeks.

Hope this helps! Good Luck

Added 12/8: $16.00 for the box ?? The rates maybe differing from market to market then. Its only 9.95 with HD DVR over here in Phila area! Do visit Circuit city or Radioshack to upgrade to HD. Over here we have the $100.00 rebate promotion until 12/31!

What is the best HD TV to go for right now?

Q. Anyone know of a good 42 to 52" inch high definition TV to buy? I'm looking to spend 1 to 2 thousand, in that ballpark range.

Please try to cite reasons for going with what you suggest. I'd really appreciate some kind of list of features or a set of good reasons for choosing one product over another.

A. Panasonic's 'High-end' V10 series Plasma TV's!

The V10 series is currently the top rated HDTV in the world right now...which it recently took over from Pioneer! Super high contrast ratios(40,000:1 native and infinite black levels) along with near instant response time(.001ms) and super fast refresh rates(600hz) make Plasma's best for fast motion content like sports, movies & gaming! Outstanding motion sharpness!

How long is the power cord for the Toshiba REGZA Cinema Series 42XV545U HDTV?
Q. I want to see what options I will have for placement.

A. Although this is a brand new LCD without many if any specific public reviews, I went for the Toshiba for a number of reasons including perceived product reliability, feature set and value for money. I actively compared the Sony 40Z4100 and Samsung LNT750 which have both been on the market for several months, are highly rated to the Toshiba 46 (not 42) inch Regza XV545U. At the end of the day the Toshiba had it all even though I read some comments about lower contrast on other models I can tell you that I perceive no real issues even though the unit is installed in a very dark room. I have not calibrated the set but DVDs look great in cinema mode, even VCR tapes are acceptable. The SRT seems to be a real bonus and I will NOT buy a Blu-Ray player as a result. Set-up was extremely easy and I was able to do it all by my lonesome, essentially plug and play into a full A/V system, the remote is programmable for all my gizmos from a B&K AVR through Sony DvD and SAT box. You get the added bennies of 5:5 pull down and 120 hz. DVDs really look goood with no judder that I could tell. One gripe: the remote does not have an illumination button which would be nice in a dark environment. I ruled out the Sony because of some bad personal Sony product experiences including TVs. Although I always liked what I consider a very natural Sony picture image I've read about some backlighting and clouding issues on the LCDs and you pay the Sony premium price. As for the Samsung, I did not want a glossy screen due to too much glare and what i can only say are horror stories I read about customer service same with Sony (hopefully not with Toshiba).

I got the set from JandR. They were very accomodating and very communicative throughout the order process. They delayed my shipment at my request and held as well as improved the price up to the time of shipment. The box shipped UPS and arrived without damage on the day promised with some added packaging inside. I would definitely buy again from them.

Seniors I'm thinking of buying a new TV. What brands do you think are good and what sizes?
Q. LED, HDTV not sure what this means? Some ideas please!

A. I suggest that you look at flat panel televisions that are high definition (HDTV); Sandy Sue. There are many brands and 3 types of flat screens to choose from; Plasma screens, LED, or LCD.

Most of the brands of HDTV flat screens will work well; so shop around for price. Do a little research online; and then go into a store and check out the brands that interest you. Look at the tv straight on and from the side, to see which picture looks best. Compare the colors and clearness of the pictures.

The size of the screen will depend on the size of the room where the tv will be placed. We have two tvs, one has a 42 inch screen and one has a 48 inch screen; the rooms are about 10x14 feet. We could have gone with bigger screens, but honestly, these screens are more than big enough. If your rooms are smaller, then you could get a smaller screen.

Our 42 inch flat panel screen HDTV is an LED screen, Samsung. The picture is clear and sharp and the color is good. We can view it from the side without a problem. The screen burnt out after 2 years, and we were able to replace it, but it cost a pretty penny. The tv is now 6 years old and works like a champ.

We've had our 48 inch flat panel screen HDTV for about 18 months; it is an LCD screen and is the LG brand. I love this tv, it does use less energy and doesn't get as hot as any of our other televisions. The picture is great and we have not had any problems with it at all.

Just look for a picture that you like, a size that you like, a price that you can afford, and check reviews of the tv you are considering. I know that the choices are dizzying. We did a bit of research, went to the stores more than once, picked the televisions we liked the best, and then waited for them to go on sale.

Good luck!

How much do hdtv prices drop over a years time?

Q. Hello, I'm planning on saving up for a Samsung LED HDTV. I'd like it to be 55 inches or more, I don't really care to have smart technology, and I'd love for it to be one of the ultra slim ones. It seems for 55 inches I'll be paying about 1100 dollars, for 60 inches its 1300 dollars, and any more than that, they automatically add the smart technology so its 2,500 or above. But I was just wondering how much a tv's price may drop in about a year from now. I've seen that 55 inch LED's used to be 2200 dollars but now they are 800-1200. How much do these prices usually drop in about a year with the new technology?

This is the tv I plan on buying:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+60%26%2334%3B+Class+-+LED+-+1080p+-+120Hz+-+HDTV/6847446.p?id=1218809261672&skuId=6847446

A. It's a tough thing to figure.

A particular model that you like may have a limited shelf-life. Manufacturers tend to make new models in order to keep prices up. Though the price of model 55-123LED (making this model number up) may be $1500 right now...conventional wisdom means that this model should be cheaper next year. The problem is that the manufacturer stops making this model and replaces it with the 55-321LED. Though it is completely identical to the old one...it is a 2013 model and therefore will still be worth the $1500 as a 'current' model.

The best time to purchase last years model is just before/just after the new ones hit the shelves. Stores will cut prices to make room for the new ones. If you wait to long though...you will find last years models hard to find.

A couple of tips for you:
A Good sale can happen anytime. It doesn't have to be Black Friday, Columbus Day, etc. Keep an eye on weekly ads from the major retailers in your area...as well as the online shops. With Price-Matching (which most major retailers offer)...anyone's sale could be a sale for your local store.

Don;t be afraid to ask for a discount. You have to believe that EVERYTHING is negotiable. You don;t have to be rude about it...just a simple "Is there any other way to save money on this TV?" I got 5% off my TV at Fry's Electronics simply by calling the manager over and asking if they're was any way he could save a few bucks (told him I was just a bit short on covering the full cost + taxes). Salesman/managers may know of coupons, etc that can save a few bucks.

Can I use my Panasonic LCD HDTV as a computer monitor?

Q. I want to use my Panasonic LCD HDTV as a computer monitor. My computer only has a VGA input. My Panasonic LCD HDTV has these types of connectors:

2 HDMI Inputs
2 S-Video Inputs
3 Sets of A/V inputs
1 Set of 3 Composite Video inputs

I want to know which type of cable can be used to connect my LCD HDTV to my computer. You can also mention cable strategies such as :

VGA to DVI to HDMI

I also want to know if I can buy these types of cables at a store (CircuitCity, WalMart, RadioShack, etc...). Please don't mention anything about Video Cards.

If you impress me with your answer, you'll get 10 Points. Make sure your answers as detailed as possible.
Why do I need to buy a video card?

This is an example:

http://www.computercasesandcables.com/ccac/images/items/CV-25120_L.jpg

With this cable, I can connect my computer to the LCD HDTV. Are there any other cables like these buy in different formats or does anyone know where can I buy this type of cable?

A. You can use the s video but the quality wont be as good

Is using an HDTV as your computer monitor bad for your eyes?
Q. I have a 28" 1080p hdtv, and was wondering if it would be bad to use it for long periods of time as a computer monitor. It'll be about a little over a foot or two from my face, as I'm sitting at a desk. Will this cause anything bad to happen to my eyes? Is there anyway to avoid this?

A. its just like using a lcd monitor. so no it probably isnt bad for your face.

Is an HDTV worse than a computer monitor to your eye?
Q. I just bought a computer that comes without a monitor, so I use the HDTV in my house as my computer monitor. Though, it is big and clear, but I feel tired very soon. I feel like my eye is worsen than. My mom keeps telling me to change my monitor. Does anyone know anything about monitors and optics? I am very concern about my eyes, don't wanna blind so soon.

A. It probably has to do with the size of the screen and how close you are to it. HD or a regular monitor won't make any difference...but a huge screen, and sitting close will cause eye strain quickly.

Like sitting in the first 10 rows at a movie theatre is hard on the eyes.

Don't worry...it won't make you blind. When it makes you tired, you stop....that is your brain protecting you.

What are the basics of how to pick an HDTV?

Q. I want one that's crystal clear for my Xbox 360 gaming, and watching movies.
I know I want a 32", 1080p and i don't know what else i need to look for to know how it will affect the HD.
So help me out with any info.

A. Go look at them.

I found mine based on price and reviews. I think the picture on a plasma is 10x as good as LCD for the price, so I got one. I looked at it in the store, I was impressed by it, and it was on sale.

Just make sure it has 1080p, and see which one looks best on the show floor. Your local Best Buy or whatever should have a bunch out.

How well does a Blu Ray player upscale DVDs?
Q. I am considering getting something to upscale normal DVDs for a new 47' 1080p HDTV. I have looked at Blu Rays for a while and have recently read that they make normal DVDs look better. If so, would normal DVDs look better on a Blu Ray player or an upscaler?

P.S. Do you have any suggestions on brands or models of Blu Ray players or upscalers?

A. It depends on the blu ray player some blu ray players are better at up-scaling than others....read the reviews for the player your thinking of buying to see how it does...blu ray players that get high ratings for up-scaling include some models from Panasonic Pioneer and LG what I have noticed also is that the more expensive models not only have better blu ray rendition but also do up-scaling better also, another thing I have noticed is when blu ray first came out it was a hot topic how well the blu ray player could upscale, lately its not mentioned as much anymore...

Is the 2 Year Protection Plan from Best Buy a ripoff?
Q. Just recently bought a Dynex led hdtv for my girlfriend's birthday. But i heard that dynex tvs aren't reliable and are more prone to breaking. Should I go back to the store and get a 2 year protection plan for it? I don't have enough money to buy a more expensive tv so that's not an option for me.

A. All three answers are way off base. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dynex%26%23153%3B+-+55%22+Class+/+LCD+/+1080p+/+120Hz+/+HDTV/1437844.p?id=1218259335717&skuId=1437844 to start. Look at the reviews. Dynex breaks no more or less than Sony, Samsung, Panasonic. I bought this one: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dynex%26%23153%3B+-+46%22+Class+/+1080p+/+60Hz+/+LCD+HDTV/9605116.p;jsessionid=5357B88A1FCCC2EAD7A2A0ACCEE9DDDA.bbolsp-app03-23?id=1218131141989&skuId=9605116 I guess over 200 people each case are what? Idiots? Go ahead and spend the extra money to get a name brand say an extra $500. And? Extended warranty? Oh hell yes. On any brand not just because it's a Dynex. A 32" CRT set was $700-$1200. A 32" LDC $350. Something had to give, quality. If you get 5-7 years, any set, you did good. My 46" has a $1200 Samsung LCD panel. I paid $500 for the set. If the panel breaks am I going to spend $1200? No. Let the extended warranty pay for it. To the other 3 answers, I guess car insurance is a joke too? Protect your investment.

Lcd 120hz vs Plasma 600hz?

Q. I will play video games 100% or the time on one of these hdtvs. Should I go with a 720p 600hz plasma or a 1080p 120hz Lcd. Both tvs are made by the same company.

A. The above post is incorrect. The screen glare problem has not been solved. Plasma screens are the glossy type. When I went to best buy, i noticed severe reflections from all angles. There is even a video done by CNET on the VT30 plasma TV (last years panasonic flagship model and also the TV in my bedroom) on youtube where you can see significant reflections even in a darker room. Plasma TVs are best suited for rooms with controlled lighting. In those conditions the plasma TV will produce great PQ. Also plasma TVs consume the same amount of power as the older plasma models. You can verify this through many review sites such as FlatpanelsHD or CNET. They measure the total watts consumption per hour and have it down on a chart. If you are adamant on purchasing a plasma, then I would recommend the ST50 by Panasonic. It is their most inexpensive plasma TV and it has gotten great reviews.

Now I recommend to you a LED LCD TV for gaming. My reasons are : if you plan on gaming a long time, your TV will not overheat and burn-in issues are non-existent. (i have seen burn-ins on a panasonic vt30 after only 5 months--even with the screen wipe feature in use). Also 3D gaming is a big plus for me so the comfort of the glasses will become significant enough to where it will affect the type of TV you may purchase. You will be able to play during the day. LED LCD TVs are very bright. Most 2012 LED TVs however have a glossy screen as well. You will get some unwanted reflections. I highly recommend LG's LW series 3D LED TVs (2011 models). They have a matte screen for unparalleled brightness and since its 2012 now, should be priced even lower than its competition.

Samsung 64inch plasma vs samsung 60inch LED TV?
Q. Cant decide on which TV to get:

http://www.harveynorman.com.au/samsung-64-series-8-full-hd-plasma-tv.html
Or
http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/cannington/Samsung_60%22_152cm_full_HD_LED_LCD_100Hz_3D_TV_UA60ES6500M

Will be the main family TV in a 60 square meter room with quite a bit of direct sunlight into the room, it will also inside an alcove.

We watch a lot of sports (soccer, F1, AFL and basketball mainly), movies and standard televison.

The plasma is a series 8 model which is the 2012 model while the LED is the 2011 model.

Please help
Cheers
Thanks

We currently sit about 3.5/4 meters away depending if the chairs are reclined so hopefully its just far enough.
Also which would have the better picture quality?
With blinds shut or at night would the plasma be a better choice?

A. A Display
First, you’ll need a 3D-ready display–whether it’s a 3D HDTV, 3D projector, or 3D computer monitor. These displays have more processing power than standard 2D models for displaying 3D images in rapid succession.

A Source
Your display may be ready for 3D playback, but you’ll still need a device to read 3D content. This can be a cable box with a subscription to a 3D channel, a 3D Blu-ray Disc player, or a PlayStation 3 system.

3D Content
3D content–the actual entertainment, in other words–will be played back using the source mentioned above, whether it’s a 3D broadcast from your cable provider, a 3D Blu-ray Disc, or a 3D video game.

3D Glasses
For now, the vast majority of 3D HDTVs require glasses for 3D viewing. Many use powered “active shutter” glasses, others polarized “passive” glasses. You’ll need one pair per viewer, and they’ll have to be compatible with your display, whether they’re the same brand, or a pair of “universal” glasses designed to work across brands.

HDMI Cable
To connect your source (such as a 3D Blu-ray Disc player) to your display, you’ll need a high-speed HDMI cable. Cables with this designation feature bandwidth speeds up to 10.2 Gbps (gigabits per second), for carrying the 3D signal without any loss of quality.

Which is better LG or Samsung Plasma for 2012 Models?
Q. I decided to buy entry level 50" Plasma TV, and please don't say just buy LED because it's out of my budget and i see that the colors of Plasma is good for me. i found these 2 models: Samsung PS51E450 and LG 50PA4500. so which is better and which has the best contrast, brightness and vibrant colors LG or Samsung

PS: My local store has only these two 50" Plasmas and i saw the LG picture quality but unfortunately the Samsung isn't in the Showroom and that's why I'm asking this question.

A. Samsung PN60E550 60-Inch 1080p 600Hz 3D Slim Plasma HDTV (Black) is fantastic, it's been over a month and no problems. The only issue is the netflix app stopped working for a couple of days and requires updates to fix. The shipping service was a day late and the moving guys who moved the TV into the house were not very professional. Good TV mediocre delivery service.

Best place on line to find a new HDTV?

Q. I am looking for something that will help me find a new HDTV. I want to be able to search by price, maufacturer, etc. I want the results to be displayed dynamically so I do not have to wait and push buttons to get more results. Also, I want this HDTV finder to give me up to date prices and tell me where I can buy this TV on line. I know it exists. I saw this one at TweakTV and I like it very much, but not sure if there are others. The one at TweakTV at www.tweaktv.com/comparisonTool.php is good and I bought a TV from there, but I want to see if there are others.

A. I spent some time at TweakTV based on your suggestion. I wound up buying my TV there after I noticed that Amazon seems to be their main vendor of choice. The tool they have at TweakTV was very helpful. I used the comparison tool. I found it at www.tweaktv.com/comparisonTool.php . I also noticed that there is this whole world of "calibration". It seems that most of these TVs come out of the plant way to bright. These guys at TweakTV give you calibration settings for your TV to get the best picture quality. I went there to buy a TV and I left with a new understanding of TV calibration.

is walmart having an in store after christmas sale this year?

Q. i want to buy a video gams for a low price

A. The Walmart After Christmas sale in 2012 will begin as an online only sale on Christmas Day. Then, you will be able to Shop the Day After Christmas Sale at Walmart. Most sites and stores do not have sales that actually start on Christmas Day. Walmart is one of the few stores that has a robust sale that starts so early. A lot of websites really start pushing their deals hard on the Day After Christmas.

There will be a ton of great deals on electronics, toys, clothing, home items, even Christmas Decorations on sale starting Christmas Day and on Tuesday. The Walmart After Christmas 2012 sale will continue on throughout the week more than likely ending during the weekend before Walmarts New Years sales begin. The reason for all the great deals is that it’s the end of the year and Walmart needs to get rid of a lot of their inventory to make room for 2013 sales items. That’s why you end up seeing such large price cuts on high ticket items, like electronics. Look for the price cut on iPhones and iPad 3s. Also, look for other deals on tablets and laptops, as well as some really good after Christmas 2012 deals on HDTVs.

Walmart’s prices are not only competitive, but in most cases they tend to be lower than any other stores, either online or offline. Unfortunately there are no Walmart After Christmas 2012 coupons anywhere. So don’t bother looking, Walmart does not accept any online coupons. There will be Free Shipping offers though. You can find all the deals online at the Walmart After Christmas Sale.

I am looking at purchasing a LCD TV, but as everyone knows there are hundreds of kinds. Which make is the best
Q. 32" LCD TV with HDTV enabled.

A. I posted this for someone with the same thing about a Plasma but it covers the same thing i hope : ) BTW Get one with Freeview built in aswell if you live in the UK! Come 2012 you will be glad you did!

Woteva you wanna believe SONY ARE NOT THE BEST!

They have received over the years a very good reputation in the electrical market but they are a bunch of wankers when you need warranty work undertaking. The best Plasma televisions are not always the most expensive, you don't always need overpriced "Tat"! The 3 Top Makes in the more well known brands are:

1. LG - These guys are brilliant with all vision equipment (+ u get a 2 year warranty as standard)

2. Samsung - Owned by sony, but use their own warranty unit so you don't have to deal with sony, and a fraction of the sony prices.

3. Philips - Again brilliant with vision products recently and have produced some sound units.

When shopping round don't forget to check out the "Budget" makes, they do sometimes offer the same spec but for a lot less, because don't forget a PLASMA only has an average life span of 8 Years before the gas burns out, and despite what people say YOU CANNOT GET THEM RE-GASSED!!! An example of budget makes are Matsui (Dixons & Currys own Brand), Maxim (At Dixons, Currys & Comet) and Logik (Dixons & Currys).

But do shop around and play companies off against each other because I know for a fact Dixons (soon to be Currys.Digital) and Currys Price Match and Beat by 10%.

Hope that helped.

I need to buy 40 32 inch HDTV's?
Q. I need good tv brands like samsung and lg. You get the idea. Any good sites where I can find some good deals? like maybe some 2012 brands. Thanks for the help.

A. First off...if you are going to be buying 40 of them...then you need to contact the manufacturer or distributor directly and try to work out wholesale pricing. This may only be possible if you have a valid business license...but I would certainly look into it as you don't want to get retailed x 40.

With or without a business license, a purchase of that size should trigger a bulk discount. Don;t bother walking into your local Best Buy as they will not have a clue of what your asking for and instead pick up the phone and contact corporate (The same applies for almost any retailer). Ask them for a bulk discount and if they don;t have one...move on to the next retailer. Even if you are talking junk 32" TV's...your still looking at 8k - 10k price....which is more than the average customer spends in a trip.
