We are looking at either 32, 37 or 42 inch plasma or lcd tv's. Normally we watch tv at night so which type of tv would have a better picture quality at night. Can anyone recommend some good models?

Answer
Plasmas are better for night viewing than LCDs.

The size to get depends on the viewing distance and the programming types. If you are going to be watching mostly HDTV programming, you can be as close as 2 times the screen measurement away (so, for a 42-incher, you don't want it any closer than 7 feet away from your viewing spot).

If you watch a lot of standard definition, you probably want a smaller screen or want to have it a bit further back, so that it is at least 2.5 or 3 times the screen dimension away.

Plasmas generally don't come any smaller than 42 inches. If 42 inches is right for you, among the top choices among reviewers right now are the Samsung HPT4254 / 4264 and the Panasonic 42px75 / px77. Check reviews at CNET below.

Good luck.

What does 1366 x 768 pixel HDTV resolution mean?

I'm looking at the 27" and the 32" Sony Bravia and both have listed under their specs the same resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels.

Does this mean that the 32" has more of a stretched out image? I'd much rather go with a smaller TV if picture quality is better.

Answer
Okay. This is one of those questions that I could spend hours talking about, but here is the short version. All tv's now list numbers just like 1366x768, or 1920x1080, etc... Back in the day there was no need for this as we all had the same. But now the numbers are for the vertical / horizontal lines. For the time being, the last # is the one you want to focus on (this is changing). 768 means that your tv can do what's known as 720P. It may be able to accept 1080p and 1080i signals, but they will be downconverted to fit the native resolution of your display. At this screen size there is going to be little if any benefit in buying a 1080p (Sharp Aquos is about the only one) because the tv just isn't big enough for it. It doesn't mean that the image will be streched unless you are viewing 4:3 content and can't stand the black bars on the sides and you strech it yourself. This resolution is a true 16:9 and HD will look great. I have a 27" 16:9 and it looks great. At this resolution and screen size I would be looking more at the features, e.g. brightness, contrast ratio, # of hdmi inputs, etc... than worrying about the 768. Right now there is only Blu-Ray that gives a true 1080p movie experience, and 1080i does not look any better than 720p so until there is more 1080p content, and way better tv's to display it in this screen size I would buy the best 32" I could find. Look at CNET for some great reviews. I wouldn't buy a 27", mine looks great, but it really is only meant for a bedroom or something like that. Hope that helps.
